Software professionals serving the enterprise market use the words 'greenfield' and 'brownfield' as clever terms of art. However, they are terribly ambiguous. Greenfield could refer to the first-time install of the application. Greenfield could refer to the enterprise having no installed base of customers. Brownfield could refer to the application already having a deployment upon which an upgrade is needed. Brownfield could refer to the enterprise having an installed base of customers. Brownfield could refer to the enterprise having a preexisting deployment of some other competitive applications that is being displaced by a first-time install of your replacement application. Software people should stay out of ecology. They are not good at cultivating terminology using this metaphor.

I've been thinking a lot lately about ways of structuring IaC code, specifically - should this code be separate from application's code, or they can (should) be kept close to each other. When writing backend code, my rule of thumb about managing transactions (and other resources, like connections) is that a method or class cannot interfere with its (transaction's) state if that transaction has been started somewhere outside of that code. In simple words, only a piece of code that started a transaction should make a decision to commit or roll it back. Looks like this model can be applied to codifying infrastructure as well. If an application owns the lifecycle of an infrastructure resource, it is okay to put them in one source code repository. Hot take: Building a business around open-source software is a lost battle. In last few months, we have seen how companies such as HashiCorp, Redis labs have faced the heat when they adopted business source licensing model. It resulted in their alternatives popping up within few days like OpenTofu, Dragonfly etc. There is no moat for such businesses because the underlying software is open-sourced which means new entrants can easily replicate what they are doing. They can sell it at a cheaper price or with a better ecosystem(if they are cloud vendors) or both. These businesses also face the dilemma of whether to merge a major improvement in the open-source or put it behind the SaaS offering. An alternative to this model is to build the business around consulting & training. The business keeps the software open sourced & provide consulting services to clients who want to use it in the most efficient manner. Pivotal has done a great job with Spring framework using this model. This way your revenue stream is not marginalized by new players easily & the core team can focus on improving the software without worrying whether it makes their core revenue model i.e. SaaS offering less attractive. Especially in the non-ZIRP era, companies are bound to reconsider where they are spending. Hence they will choose the option that burns the smallest hole in their pocket. #opensource

During my time at FICO, I worked on an enterprise application for collection and recovery of debt. The application was built with several layers. The front end used JavaServer Faces (JSF), and navigation was managed by Spring Web Flow. The project was heavily dependent on J2EE technologies, particularly Session Beans and Message-Driven Beans , while the data layer was powered by JPA/Hibernate. Much of the code in this project was reverse-engineered from design and auto-generated, thanks to the excellent work of one of the talented engineers in our team. While many of the engineers were focused on developing the business layer, there was an issue: the flow in the business layer was hardcoded and not customisable by the customer. To address this, we integrated BPMN with the business layer, allowing customers to define their own business logic. For example, one bank could configure the system to automatically send an email to an account defaulter, while another could implement a different strategy. We also provided a miscellaneous interface that could be invoked from a BPEL flow. I began to draw parallels between this approach and the concept of Agentic AI. In this model, the customer can define their problem or use case in plain English, and the LLM interprets the input, identifies the necessary actions, and creates a plan. Based on this plan, the use case is executed. If I compare the BPEL-based approach to the agent-based approach, the analogy would be as follows: • BPMN → LLM • Interfaces → Tools/Actions • BPEL → The use case in plain English

Why I Keep Coding: Staying Technical as an Engineering Leader (or Architect) I often get asked why I still work on side projects to learn new frameworks or technologies. Isn’t hands-on coding less relevant in a senior role? While not strictly necessary for my daily responsibilities, here’s why staying technical (which doesn’t mean contributing to production code though!) is crucial for me—and why I think it would benefit anyone in tech leadership: ► 1. Staying Grounded Thinking you’re “too senior” to code (or to understand it well) is dangerous, as it disconnects you from the developer experience. Experimenting with Next.js, React, Flutter, AWS, Azure, Unity etc. has helped me understand the daily challenges developers face, making it easier to provide practical guidance. ► 2. Broadening Problem-Solving New languages and frameworks introduce fresh approaches to problem-solving, broadening the range of solutions available. This understanding allows me to evaluate strategies and make decisions with greater confidence across various technical contexts. ► 3. Keeping Motivated Coding is creatively energizing. Building something new, even outside my core job, is rewarding and a reminder of why I joined tech. It also reinforces confidence in my skills. ► 4. Earning Respect Developers respect leaders who “speak their language.” Understanding new frameworks and technologies, and having practical experience with them, allow me to offer more meaningful input, avoiding the disconnect that can come from solely managing. ► 5. Staying Adaptive in a Constantly Evolving Field By learning new languages and frameworks, I feel I'm more prepared for shifts in industry trends and standards. My side projects might not be core to my current responsibilities, but they future-proof my skills and capabilities in a field that doesn’t stay static. === While technical managers have many responsibilities beyond coding, and many other skills to hone, I believe staying technical gives us the insight, credibility, and agility needed to lead effectively. In a field defined by innovation, keeping our skills sharp isn’t optional—it’s part of what makes us valuable.
