Addressing the Aviation Maintenance Technician Shortage: A Crucial Step for the Industry’s Future The aviation sector is on the road to recovery post-pandemic, but a significant challenge persists: a shortage of aviation maintenance technicians (AMTs). Current estimates suggest a shortfall of 12,000 to 18,000 AMTs, which could persist or even worsen over the next decade. Factors like an aging workforce, low career uptake, and rising passenger demand (IATA predicts 8.2 billion passengers by 2037) are contributing to this gap. Boeing’s 2021 Commercial Market Outlook indicates that 610,000 new AMTs will be needed globally through 2041, with the trade association ADS saying that there are currently 10,000 vacancies in the UK alone. To meet this demand, the industry must increase the number of trained AMTs by at least 20% above those already being trained. Strategies to address this could include: ✈️ Increasing financial compensation: Making the role more attractive by acknowledging the high skill and training required. ✈️ Diversifying recruitment efforts: Expanding marketing to underrepresented groups (currently, <10% of aviation and aerospace engineers are female, for example). ✈️ Mentorship programs: Leveraging the experience of current professionals to guide and inspire the next generation. This recent #NTSB aviation safety report exposes critical Operational Control deficiencies in Part 135 operations in the US, underscoring the Safety Net that certified dispatchers provide as the '3rd Pilot on the Ground'. These findings should equally serve as a wake-up call for #EASA to scrutinize similar risks (if not larger) within European civil aviation. Currently, the Operational Control function under EASA's Part-CAT places a disproportionate burden on pilots, who, once airborne, are isolated in the cockpit and disconnected from real-time decision-making support. As recommended by the NTSB, it's time for #EASA to mandate certified #Dispatchers for Operational Control functions, ensuring pilots have ground-based licensed and qualified support that come equipped to call-out & manage risks dynamically. This move would align Europe’s safety framework & global ICAO Ann.6 and Ann.1 SARPs to significantly enhance operational resilience and flight safety. EASA should closely examine the accidents and incidents that prompted the NTSB’s recommendations to the FAA (as does Transport Canada) regarding the critical role of certified Part 121 -type Aircraft Dispatchers. These cases highlight the critical role Dispatchers play in enhancing operational safety and reducing pilot workload when it matters most. It’s time for EASA to adopt similar safety standards for its EASA Part – CAT (Commercial Air Transport) Airlines (Part 121 Flag equivalents), ensuring that European Flag carriers benefit from the same robust layers of risk management and operational oversight that FAA and Transport Canada -certified dispatchers provide across the pond. Aligning with these proven practices would be a significant step forward in bolstering safety and harmonizing global aviation standards. TODAY IN COAST GUARD AVIATION HISTORY 25-26 NOVEMBER 2016 (2 OF 3): a Sikorsky MH-60T #6037 assigned to Air Station Kodiak, AK and crewed by LT Paul "PJ" Johansen (AC); LT Matt Keiper (CP); AET2 Class James W. Rizer (FM); AST2 John Kreske, and HS3 Christine Parham (AMS) launched at night to medically evacuate an injured crewman from the 600-foot cargo vessel TIANJIN PIONEER in challenging conditions including 55 to 60 knot winds, 25-foot seas with ¼ mile visibility, zero illumination and no visible horizon 92 miles north of Adak, AK (900 miles from Kodiak). Headwinds and lack of refueling locations jeopardized the mission and required impeccable accuracy in fuel planning. The crewman had sustained life-threatening injuries while working in heavy seas. The duty flight surgeon recommended a medevac to bring the man to a higher level of care as soon as possible. [Excerpt from "Lt. Paul Johansen, the helicopter’s pilot. “It was the day after Thanksgiving. I was at the movie theater with my family and got word from work saying there was a case brewing out near Adak and asked if I could come in. I said sure. That’s what anybody does who gets that call.” The aircrew listed above flew to Cold Bay, Alaska in an Air Station Kodiak HC-130H (anyone know this aircrew?) to take control of the MH-60T they would be flying on the long mission. He said every decision and action was a team effort. “The decision-making process was very discussion oriented. It wasn’t me, as the aircraft commander, making the decisions. It was us feeding information to each other and then collectively making decisions, which is how we typically operate,” said Johansen. “I had a very experienced aircrew. So making those decisions was very easy. They have a lot of good input and they were comfortable with the decisions we were making, with the fuel situation, with options to land. I ultimately own the decisions as the aircraft commander, but all the decisions were made as a team after a lot of good discussions. Keep in mind 2 whistleblowers are dead who worked for Boeing, now 10 more whistleblowers are ready to testify before congress. Hopefully, these brave whistleblowers will not have the same fate as their colleagues. Time will tell if Boeing can get their act together on the safety aspects of making aircraft. The world is watching. Boeing needs to be 100% transparent moving forward and listen to your employees as they are the true heroes exposing flaws with aircraft designs. More to follow……..
