GOVTECH AT THE CORE 🏛️ Reinventing #B2G as a viable (and yes, even exciting) model by truly understanding the #public sector. Diego Docavo, head of startups at Gobe Studio, shared the particularities of working with public administration as a client, leaving us with three #learnings: ❌ Expecting custom tenders tailored for individual companies. ✅ Opening up competition to include a wider range of companies. ❌ Viewing the public sector as an inaccessible "black box." ✅ Applying strategy and methodology to navigate and win contracts. ❌ Assuming the B2G market lacks profitability. ✅ Recognizing high customer value, if CAC is effectively managed. Gobe Studio is doing phenomenal work by collaborating closely with public sector agents to create smoother processes for the #startup ec(h)osystem. An incredible night of Pitch&Drink with P2S.vc in Lisbon! 🚀 On November 11, as Web Summit got underway, we brought together founders and investors for an unforgettable Pitch&Drink event, part of the Pre-Seed to Succeed program, created in partnership with I2BF Global Ventures, AltaIR Capital, Yellow Rocks!, and Smart Partnership Capital. The response was outstanding — with 740 registrations, including more than 150 investors eager to connect. Out of 356 startup applications, 74 top startups were selected to join the speed-dating pitch session, creating a vibrant, high-energy experience. After the fast-paced pitches, the evening shifted into a dynamic networking setting, where connections were made and insights shared in a friendly atmosphere. This event in Lisbon also marked a special milestone: one year since the launch of Pre-Seed to Succeed! Over the past year, 8 promising startups have joined our portfolio (with one more exciting deal to be announced soon). We’re proud to support these innovative founders on their journey and excited to see their growth. We’re still reflecting on and reminiscing about our annual #FounderRetreat which took place in Portugal last month. 🌊✨ Today, we caught up with the Head of Founder Experience Sonia Maciuszewicz for the next instalment of our #HumansofBACKEDVC series. Sonia joined the BACKED Clan in 2019 to guide our #FrontierFounders through their post-investment journeys, with a keen interest on leadership, people development and wellbeing. A little Web Summit news: The largest number of startups ever will be at Web Summit this November. We're beyond thrilled and I'm so proud of the team. Today we share the data for the first time. The number of American startups exhibiting in Lisbon will surpass 150 for the first, reaching more than 250! The number of startups exhibiting from both the UK and Germany will reach ~300 for each country, up sharply on 2023. The number of startups exhibiting from Spain and Italy will increase by more than 50% compared to 2023, to ~170 from Spain and ~100 from Italy. These rates of growth are unprecedented for Web Summit. But non-traditional markets are also up sharply too. The number of startups exhibiting from Serbia for example, will exceed 50, which is more than double the number compared to 2023. The number of startups exhibiting from Finland has also doubled in just a single year. And that’s just startups who are exhibiting. There are far more founders and startups simply attending; networking, listening, learning. We estimate there will be ~15,000 founders at Web Summit this year. A large part of this unprecedented growth is driven by a boom in bootstrapped startups. That boom is ushering in a new era in tech. Traditional, early stage VCs are increasingly being sidelined, while a new generation of bootstrapped startups are starting and scaling without them. For the first time, "seeking investment" is no longer the top priority for startups at Web Summit. It's “meeting customers”. Tech is changing. And Web Summit is changing to meet this new reality. So why is there a boom in bootstrapped startups? Perhaps it is because it has never been cheaper to build software; perhaps it is because it has never been cheaper to scale a software startup; perhaps it is because it has never been easier to find customers; perhaps it is because major tech companies fired hundreds of thousands of highly talented staff in recent years and many of those are now bootstrapping a new generation of startups. Whatever it is, you'll meet an entirely new generation of founders and startups at Web Summit, more of them bootstrapping than ever before in our history. The numbers are unprecedented. The entire Web Summit team has worked flat out for the last year to hit this incredible milestone. I'm so proud of them. Can we scale up love? We all have our own ways of developing innovation. Last week, at a Nova SBE Haddad Entrepreneurship Institute event I got to know a singular one - and "love" is at its heart. The Patient Innovation Bootcamp by EIT Health and Carnegie Mellon University focuses on scaling up medical and care solutions that patients and their close partners developed for their own health problems. Solutions that people developed for themselves and loved ones, to solve serious medical issues and that those people tested on themselves - and, that they believe can solve the same problems in other people. There are "electronic eyes" developed by parents for their vision-impaired children. There is a story of a deadly cardiac diagnosys on a smart engineer that considered it "just a plumbing problem". There are serious problems - and people that faced them head-on and decided they wanted to share their solutions with the world. In a way, I really do think they are "scaling up love" - is that possible?
