Spotify is getting sued for underpaying royalties to songwriters & publishers. It's estimated they'll underpay by $150M this year. Here's how, why & what it means: --- 𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘆 𝗱𝗼𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝘁? Streams from bundles require a reduced mechanical royalty payment to songwriters & publishers in the US. So, Spotify got tricky... 1) they added audiobooks into premium tiers, 2) then quietly gave audiobooks a stand-alone tier, & 3) now claim Premium, Duo & Family tiers are bundles Reducing their mechanical payments by almost 50%. But the Mechanical Licensing Collective (MLC) is suing, saying this is not a true bundle. 𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝗱𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀? We're seeing the beginnings of a new streaming era. After years of subscriber growth at all costs, it's time to get profitable. - Belts are tightening. - Shivs are out. - Enshittification is under way. But I have to wonder... I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, the music industry is perfectly poised for web3. It’s a matter of how long it takes to go mainstream. However, there are still several challenges preventing this from happening: 👉 Lack of Awareness: Many artists and industry professionals are still wary or unaware of what web3 and blockchain technology can offer. 👉 Technical Barriers: The complexity of blockchain technology can be daunting for non-technical users. Until it becomes user-friendly or seamlessly in the background, this is a sticking point. 👉 Regulatory Uncertainty: Unclear regulations surrounding digital assets and blockchain can create hesitation. 👉 Infrastructure Development: The current antiquated and separated systems in the music industry will cause huge problems in uptake and development of web3 tech - taking years. Traditional revenue models are deeply entrenched, making the shift to new economic paradigms difficult. Despite these obstacles, the music industry needs to embrace web3. Here’s why: 👉 Artist Empowerment: Web3 can provide artists with more control over their work, ensuring fairer compensation and ownership. 👉 Transparent Royalties: Blockchain technology enables transparent and instant royalty payments, reducing disputes and delays. 👉 New Revenue Streams: NFTs and tokenization can create innovative revenue streams beyond traditional sales and streaming. Especially in the physical and digital space. 👉 Cultural Preservation: By leveraging decentralized storage, the preservation and access to music can be enhanced, safeguarding cultural heritage. Especially for digital music. The potential is immense, and while the journey to mainstream adoption may be long and complex, the destination promises a transformative impact. Just want to give a shoutout to OpenVC. It's been a great resource, I've used it off and on for a few months, and today decided to get the yearly pass. It allows you to search VCs and submit your deck, with tracking and analytics. So you can see every slide a VC looks at on your deck, and when they back out. Helps for deck fine-tuning. It also allows VC's to tell you why they passed if they did. I've also gotten some followup meetings on ZOOM. It's just a great resource that doesn't cost thousands of dollars a month like most others. Also, had some tech support issues as well (my fault) and they were handled within half an hour. Thanks Stephane Nasser for such a great tool for entrepreneuers.
