If Starlink enables phone calls without traditional cellular networks, it could redefine the telecommunications industry: Global Connectivity: Starlink’s satellite technology can connect remote and rural areas where traditional networks haven’t reached. No More Towers: Seamless communication without cell towers could challenge the need for telecom companies to maintain costly infrastructure. Competitive Pricing: A unified global network might undercut current pricing models, especially for international calls and data. Market Disruption: Controlling satellites and services, Starlink could dominate the market, forcing telecom providers to rethink their strategies. A New Standard: Satellite-based communication could become the norm, compelling telecom operators to innovate or risk obsolescence. Telecom providers may need to pivot quickly by integrating satellite solutions or adopting competitive innovations to stay relevant in the face of this disruption. ♻️ Subscribe to ‘Siliconnector’ Telegram channel for insights, news and jokes from Silicon Valley and the Tech world: https://t.me/siliconnector

The Qwen2 series from Alibaba Group focuses on efficient parameter usage in large language models, offering foundational and instruction-tuned models with parameters ranging from 0.5 billion to 72 billion. This series demonstrates improved performance over its predecessor, Qwen1.5, and competes effectively with proprietary models across a variety of benchmarks, including language understanding, generation, multilingual capabilities, coding, mathematics, and reasoning. The flagship model, Qwen2-72B, achieves impressive benchmark scores: 84.2 on MMLU, 37.9 on GPQA, 64.6 on HumanEval, 89.5 on GSM8K, and 82.4 on BBH. Its instruction-tuned variant, Qwen2-72B-Instruct, also shows strong performance with scores of 9.1 on MT-Bench, 48.1 on Arena-Hard, and 35.7 on LiveCodeBench. The series supports around 30 languages, including widely spoken languages such as English, Chinese, and Spanish. To promote accessibility and innovation, the model weights for Qwen2 are available on platforms like Hugging Face and ModelScope, along with additional resources on GitHub. Built on the Transformer architecture, the series features both dense models and a Mixture-of-Experts (MoE) model, employing advanced techniques such as Grouped Query Attention and Dual Chunk Attention to enhance performance and extend context capabilities. The pre-training phase utilized over 7 trillion tokens, significantly boosting its coding and mathematics skills. Post-training processes included supervised fine-tuning and reinforcement learning from human feedback, aligning the models more closely with human preferences and enhancing their instruction-following capabilities. Evaluations have shown that Qwen2 outperforms various baseline models, including Mixtral-8x22B and Llama-3-70B, in both language capabilities and instruction-tuned functionalities. How to create your first VC Fund in Emerging Markets ?! Having navigated the journey, pains, and gains of establishing Georgia's first VC fund and accelerator focused on U.S.-oriented products, I want to share the lessons I've learned along the way. I have invested in some consumer electronics hardware startups for over a decade, and have seen some fail and some succeed. Consumer hardware is HARD. Consumers expect close to perfect products that at least promise to do many things for them, product price can typically only go down from launch day onwards, and there are so many balls to juggle simultaneously in taking product through launch + shipping. Biggest mistake is often this: perfect is the enemy of good. Steve Jobs may have said consumers don't know what they want, but you are no Steve Jobs - so get real consumer feedback as early as possible vs building in stealth forever. Lastly, plan ahead for next 2-3 rounds of financing. Money will be hardest to get when you need it most, and quality of investors drops sharply because there are few exit paths half-way through. This is something most executives who come from large consumer electronics companies and may have great experience in product design, engineering, supply chain management, manufacturing, logistics, pricing, distribution channels, marketing etc, don't know enough about.

Anyone wondering how Apple #Vision was selling should see this. 500,000 units in year one and expected to experience a 75% in Q3 2024. It seems that many people agreed with my earlier assessment, “Cool technology that works well, but what’s the use case?” What do you think?’ #management #venturecapital #privateequity #AR #VR #AppleVision #CapitalMarkets

Founder story: poolside's Co-Founder & CEO Jason Warner (pictured) & Co-Founder & CTO Eiso Kant are scaling a world-class research team to achieve #AGI and help billions code. Together, Jason and Eiso display a rare combination of tenacity, domain depth and product intuition. How it works: Developers today must execute a tidal wave of manual tasks and write tedious glue code to keep their services and applications working. poolside aims to help developers connect with technologies that enable them to translate natural language models and automated workflows into real-world developer operations – two or three levels of abstraction beyond a simple chat function to move from bugs and fixes to resolution and documentation. Living in the future (and enabling developers to build it) has been a consistent thread tying Jason and Eiso’s career experiences together. Now, we’re excited to help them build it. Interested in learning more from Jason and Eiso directly? Both founders will be at #AWSreInvent (booth # 708) December 2nd-6th in Las Vegas. Venture Capital in Healthcare : Catalyzing Medical Breakthroughs Venture capital plays a pivotal role in shaping the future of medicine, acting as a crucial catalyst for innovation and advancement in healthcare. As a physician deeply involved in the VC world, I've witnessed firsthand how strategic investments are driving forward remarkable medical breakthroughs that promise to revolutionize patient care. So, why is VC Essential in Healthcare? Funding Innovation: Many groundbreaking ideas in medicine require substantial financial backing to move from concept to clinic. Venture capital provides the necessary resources to support early-stage innovations that might otherwise struggle to find funding through traditional channels. Speeding Up Development: VC investment can significantly accelerate the development process of new medical technologies and pharmaceuticals. By providing capital, expertise, and resources, VC helps companies navigate complex regulatory paths and reach the market faster than they could on their own. Bridging the Gap: There is often a 'valley of death' in medical innovation, where projects fail to move from research to development due to lack of funding. VC bridges this gap, turning viable research into actionable, market-ready solutions. The influence of venture capital on healthcare extends beyond just financial investment. It fosters a dynamic ecosystem where: Innovative Approaches are nurtured, enabling technologies like AI, precision medicine, and telehealth to flourish, each opening new avenues for enhancing patient care. Entrepreneurial Spirit thrives, encouraging medical professionals and researchers to develop and pitch new solutions that address unmet needs. Strategic Partnerships between startups and established healthcare entities are formed, integrating fresh ideas into mainstream medical practice. Looking Ahead 👇 As we look to the future, the synergy between venture capital and healthcare holds immense potential. With continued VC support, the next decade could see monumental advancements in how we diagnose, treat, and manage diseases, making previously unthinkable levels of patient care a reality. Let's discuss how we can further harness the power of VC to transform healthcare landscapes and improve patient outcomes globally. #HealthcareVC #MedicalInnovation #FutureOfMedicine ----- Click the link in my bio to join 2,000+ healthtech experts and thought leaders.

With precious few seconds to tell a story, metaphors are incredibly important in ads. But metaphors can be unintentional. Apple's intended metaphor: We've squeezing lots of creativity into a thin device. Apple's accidental metaphor: We're crushing creative expression. cc Lulu Cheng Meservey #marketing #advertising #Apple

Reality, better - A moment possibly as big as the original iPhone: AR wearables bring AI to our physical spaces, enabling a whole new interface to enjoy, collaborate and connect with the world. As the world restricts smartphone based screens, a whole new world of Augmented Reality wearables stands to leapfrog how humans engage with their physical environment. It's wonderful to see Meta drive the everyday mainstream AR use cases: 1️⃣ Connect like never before through video calls embedded in heads up displays 2️⃣ Multi-task effortless through large field of views, replacing bulky screens 3️⃣ Access multimodal AI, through open LLM models, to drive intelligence in physical context 4️⃣ Collaborate with deep presence, independent of physical distance 5️⃣ All in a form factor that is light, comfortable and accessible - every day glasses... Congrats to Meta on their Orion product launch today. My daughters and I are big fans of your Ray Bay Meta glasses and am excited to try out the Orion... Excited too to talk to founders building at the intersection of AI x AR x Web3. Our interfaces for the web are evolving, customizing to either transactional lo-def (with command line chat or voice interfaces for AI agents) or emotive high-def (with AR or VR high definition interfaces for photo-realistic immersive experiences).

AAH Ventures
In the fast-paced world of startups, venture studios like AAH Ventures are proving to be game-changers. These unique VC entities are gaining immense popularity globally, with a recent GSSN whitepaper confirming that venture studio startups are more successful than those from accelerators or traditional VC-funded companies, and venture studio startups exit 33% faster than their conventional counterparts. Notable successes like Tinder, HelloFresh, Moderna, and Medium highlight the power of this investment model. What sets venture studios apart from traditional incubators or VCs? Their methodologies, structures, and deep domain expertise. Unlike accelerators with rigid 6 to 12-week cohort timelines, venture studios have the flexibility to search, pivot, and refine until they find the perfect product/market fit. They invest their own resources, ensuring a higher success rate. Some, such as AAH Ventures even 'follow the money in', taking both strategic and operational roles in each startup business to improve its chances of success even more. Investors and startups alike should take note: studios like AAH Ventures deliver venture-like returns for non-venture-like risks. With now around 720+ venture studios globally, this rising asset class is attracting top-tier investors like Khosla Ventures, 500 Global, Unilever Ventures, and even drinks giant Diageo. However, venture studios take a significant equity stake—typically between 25% and 75%. So this model is best suited for seasoned entrepreneurs ready to focus on brand building and exiting rather than merely validating ideas. If you want to know more about the power of venture studios, contact us via our website www.aah.ventures/contact #aahVentures #venturestudio #advisory #investment #growth #foodbev #makinglipssmile

Exciting to see startups aiming to use AI to discover chemicals, materials, drugs, etc. Semi companies have taken notice: AMD is investing in and Cadence is acquiring them. Semi/EDA companies have broken out by becoming critical path, whether it’s through critical software, packaging, IP, design kits from foundries, or user communities. Aside from just making it easy to make new materials, these “AI for making X” companies also need to articulate a vision as to how they can establish monopolistic positions in their industries.
