Many Christian women love to be servant leaders, give to others and nurture communities. At the same time, as they do this, they can get pulled into group dynamics such as 'conformity' and 'chameleon effect,' which dynamics, when they later try to take care of themselves and upgrade their habits, can pull them back into the old ways of being. This can feel frustrating and it happens to many of us. There are many ways to change habits, but from my decades of trying to help people, I've selected only the strategies that are the easiest to implement, yielding the most results, while staying true to our Christian faith, along with science and psychology. Sometimes, we don’t know where Point A is going to lead. But if we keep showing up, doing one thing at a time, we can find ourselves in a place that’s truly beautiful. This past week, I had the honor of being the opening keynote speaker for the NCSL conference a moment that filled me with so much gratitude and pride. Exactly one year ago, I was a workshop presenter at the same event. The growth I’ve experienced between then and now, not only as a presenter but as a human being, prepared me for this opportunity. It’s a reminder that in life, we often want things right now. We want the keynote, the partner, the job, the friends, the family, the money, the baby—whatever it may be. And when we don’t get it immediately, we’re so quick to beat ourselves up. But the truth is, there’s so much growth in the waiting period. That space, as hard as it can be, is where miracles happen. So if you’re in a season of waiting, growing, or evolving, I hope you hold on. Your miracle is unfolding. And when you reach that beautiful place, don’t forget to celebrate your journey. Black men, the journey can be demanding, and although there are bigger goals yet to be achieved, let's not forget to acknowledge and celebrate our progress, no matter how small, because celebrating wins boosts motivation and reminds us of how far we have come. Our journey is often filled with challenges that demand our strength, resilience, and determination. As we strive toward our bigger goals, it’s easy to focus solely on the future, overlooking the progress we’ve already made. However, it’s essential to pause and recognize even the small victories along the way. These milestones, no matter how minor they may seem, are evidence of our growth and perseverance. By acknowledging and celebrating these wins, we not only honor our efforts but also reinforce the belief that we are capable of achieving even greater things. Celebrating our progress is more than just a momentary boost—it’s a powerful motivator that fuels our drive to keep moving forward. When we take time to reflect on how far we’ve come, we remind ourselves of the obstacles we’ve overcome and the strength we’ve gained.
