NEW (Nonprofit Enterprise at Work) is doing great things in SE Michigan! Applications for the 2024-25 cohort of "Champions for Change" are now open. In Champions for Change, leaders from across the social sector in SE Michigan can grow in their abilities to lead from their values. Champions will uncover the implicit and explicit ways race has impacted their lived-experiences. They'll practice dialogue across diverse aspects of identity. And they'll conspire with others to spur change towards racial co-liberation.

In the midst of the Dr. Marten days, strutting around in boots and jeans at school, summer days were filled with the joy of showcasing animals. Despite not blending in with the popular sports clique, your authenticity shined through. It was in 8th grade that a special visitor left an indelible mark on your journey. Stepping into the agricultural world, you finally felt a sense of belonging. From that moment on, your path was clear - to become an agricultural teacher. Over the course of eight steadfast years, you remained dedicated to this calling. Transitioning into the role of a 22-year-old ag teacher, overseeing students just a few years younger, in settings like a welding shop, greenhouse, and classroom, brought a mix of excitement and challenges. This experience imparted invaluable lessons that shaped your perspective. Recognizing the financial constraints of a single teacher's salary, you ventured into the finance sector, altering the course of your life. Despite encountering hurdles in a male-dominated field, your unwavering grit an wit propelled you to success. While you may not be immersed in soil every day, your enduring passion has paved the way for a truly fulfilling life rooted in agriculture and propelled by capitalism. If you want to find a better life, seek it.

Greetings Linkedin Family, The relationship between HBCU and PWI students is one of shared experiences and distinct perspectives. Both groups navigate similar challenges in higher education, but often in different cultural and institutional contexts. HBCU students benefit from a rich legacy of Black excellence and a supportive environment that celebrates their culture, history, and identity. In contrast, PWI students, while often experiencing a more diverse or predominantly white campus environment, also face unique opportunities for cross-cultural learning and engagement. Despite these differences, both groups can learn from each other’s experiences, finding common ground in their pursuit of success while recognizing the value in their distinct backgrounds. By fostering dialogue, empathy, and collaboration, we can bridge the gap between HBCUs and PWIs, empowering all students to thrive in their academic and professional journeys. - - - - One of the highlights of the Collegiate 100 conference was serving as a panelist where I had the opportunity to discuss the dynamic and sometimes complex relationship between HBCU and PWI students. We dove into the unique experiences, strengths, and challenges that both groups face, and how we can foster greater unity and understanding in our academic and professional journeys.

Seven years ago, HBCU 20x20 | The Application was born out of a deep desire to tackle the systemic barriers that so many talented Black millennials faced in the workforce. As I reflect on its roots, I think back to a time when I was stuck in the cycle of “click and hope”—submitting resumes online and waiting for a response, often to no avail. As a proud Dillard University graduate, I saw firsthand how many of us—despite doing everything "right"—struggled to land opportunities. That led to the launch of #HBCU20x20 on Labor Day 2017, with a mission to change that narrative. Our goal was bold: directly place 20,000 HBCU students and graduates into jobs and internships by 2020. We built partnerships with employers like PwC, The White House White House Initiative for Historically Black Colleges and Universities (still partners ‘til this day) hosted professional development workshops, and traveled from campus to campus, ensuring that our people were seen, heard, and most importantly, hired. As we celebrate seven years of #HBCU20x20, I am proud of how far we've come, but I know there's still work to be done. We’re committed to continuing this journey, creating access, opportunity, and a future where diversity is the standard, not just an aspiration.
