Technologies like DLR, predictive maintenance, asset life expectancy etc. not only help improving reliability, safety, and grid resiliency, but also greatly contribute to affordability by reducing requirements of costly and time consumimg upgrades, and by optimizing usage of existing infrastructure and converting emergency repairs into scheduled ones. The U. S. Department of Energy has closed a $73 million loan guarantee to develop a solar-plus-energy-storage microgrid on Tribal lands in California. The project will benefit the Viejas Band of Kumeyaay Native Americans by providing utility-scale renewable energy generation and storage infrastructure. The project company, Indian Energy, is 100% Native-owned, emphasizing the importance of Indigenous involvement in renewable energy projects. The microgrid will create 250 construction jobs and eight permanent jobs, while also reducing energy costs for the Tribe and supporting economic development. State and federal resources are working together to ensure the success of large-scale Tribal energy projects like this one. Overall, the project showcases how renewable energy initiatives can drive economic growth, create jobs, and support a more sustainable future for all communities involved. Studies have found that sub-metering behind the meter results in 35% less usage; and transformer monitoring can result in intelligent transformer maintenance preventing outages.

This week, I was at the NARUC Summer Policy Summit where I had the privilege of speaking as part of "The Tightrope: Utility CEOs’ Balancing Act" panel alongside Ken Thomas of AARP Florida and Darcie L. H. of California Public Utilities Commission. Utilities across the nation are in a constant balancing act. They're faced with the pressure to meet new policy and customer demands while ensuring reliable power for the future, a resilient grid, equity and affordability. It's a tough needle to thread, but not insurmountable. During my panel, I discussed how Exelon is tackling these challenges head on and building a smarter, stronger, and cleaner energy grid with options that meet customer needs at affordable rates and that prioritize equity in energy. As the nation's largest utility by customer count, our goal is to lead the way in creating resilient and equitable energy systems that benefit everyone in the communities in which we serve. #NARUCsummer24
