I love to tell stories, and I really love helping others learn this career-changing skill. For many years I have taught data storytelling to thousands in my previous companies, at conferences and for universities. Last week when I was in Minnesota I had the privilege of bringing my passion and experience to our Digital, Analytics and Technology team at Best Buy. Mozart once said "the music is not in the notes, but in the silence between." One of areas where I see technical people struggle is embracing white space in our PowerPoints and our presentations. Just as nonstop notes without pause would overwhelm the listener, so stories with too much detail prevent our audience from understanding the true message. This makes a story BORING! My challenge to the team was to focus only on what you need to make the story obvious. The goal is not that we speak, but that others can listen. I am grateful for the opportunity to help us grow in this vital skill at Best Buy. Why do companies invest in #DataLiteracy programs? One very big reason is to empower executives with knowledge, skills, and mindset for #DataDriven decision-making. What do most data literacy programs teach? Intro to data concepts, the role of data in gaining competitive advantage, and identifying key performance indicators and setting measurable goals. The assumption is that if the exec understands the data concepts, then she will indirectly develop (or automatically have?) the knowledge, skills and mindset for data-informed decision-making. Unfortunately, it doesn't work!
