Adding a new state can stress out your Payroll and HR Teams more than most companies might be aware of. Often individual counties within each state have their own PTO/Sick Pay Rates and in the case of some places such as New York, there are even different rates for each borough. Add on top of that different minimum wage rates and laws around Insurance for each state. It is very important that as companies expand, they let the back office teams know as soon as possible about the possible expansion so that they can prepare, and if necessary research the new states laws to remain compliant. Payroll and HR Teams should also remember to let their Payroll/HRIS Provider know as well, as they likely have resources setup to help with this process already. #payroll #hris #expansion

Too many words! In HR, we often send emails with detailed information for employees. Maybe it is how to apply for FMLA, or how to renew a license or certification, or the steps to follow for benefits enrollment. We also often complain that no one reads the emails we send. We get calls asking us questions that were answered in the email we just sent. The frustration is real! But… what if we stopped complaining that no one read the email and started considering the employees’ perspective? Could we send the information differently? Is there a better way to communicate the same information? Details and compliance are important, but sometimes too many words can block the intended message. We have to self evaluate, to reflect on our own practices with a willingness to shift.

Walking My Way to Balance and Perspective In 2008, I found myself trying to balance a stretch role at work, young children, home responsibilities, aging parents, and more. It was a delicate, precarious balance—one that so many women navigate daily, often without acknowledgment. In this tightly wound state, even the smallest disruption felt overwhelming. Stress was a constant companion. That’s when I turned to walking as my way to clear my head. Every morning, I would carve out an hour to walk—sometimes waking earlier than usual just to make it happen. Over time, a few friends joined me, and our little walking group became a source of connection, perspective, and calm. Those walks didn’t just lighten the load; they became my anchor—a centering ritual that helped me regain clarity and face the day with a steadier mind. Here’s what I’ve learned: Find your anchor. Life will inevitably throw its challenges your way, and you will rise to meet them. But having something that grounds you—a walk, a hobby, a quiet moment—can make the journey a little more manageable and a lot more meaningful. What’s your anchor?
