It is also an often underrated aspect of culture and internal comms to keep fostering an environment to help more people feel comfortable speaking that truth. If everyone is shot down when they do this then people stop saying what they really think pretty quickly. As PR professionals we have such an opportunity to lead by example in those moments and voice a sense of reality or opportunity missing from the room. I am ecstatic to share that I have secured a substantial grant of approximately $850,000 on behalf of Genentech Oceanside Technical Operations from the California Employment Training Panel (ETP) to enhance workforce skills. This grant will facilitate upskilling and reskilling training for the dedicated employees at Genentech Oceanside, focusing on both the legacy stainless steel and the new Oceanside Single Use Technology (OSUT) biologics manufacturing facilities. The training, reimbursable under a single employer contract with critical proposal enhancement via GO-Biz, targets manufacturing staff across both facilities, including personnel from Manufacturing Science and Technology, Quality Assurance, Quality Control, and other essential site functions. The initiative underscores the critical need for a well-trained workforce in Southern California's biopharma sector, offering competitive wages and ensuring Genentech's sustainability in next-generation bio manufacturing. The investment in workforce development, complemented by ongoing corporate training initiatives, aligns with Genentech's commitment to innovation and sustainability. The new OSUT facility promises expedited medicine delivery to patients, reduced resource consumption, and zero plastic waste to landfills. A proficient workforce is essential for the success of this advanced facility, emphasizing the significance of ETP's support for the proposal. What It Means to Step Up During Difficult Times In times of crisis, we often hear about the importance of leadership. But what does it really mean to pull together and lead during difficult times? I’ve realized that many people tend to wait for someone else to step in and take charge, thinking leadership is reserved for certain individuals. But true leadership is about recognizing the moment when you can step up - sometimes that means being the one to create space for collaboration, not just command. Recent events, like the hurricanes that devastated parts of the Carolinas and Tennessee, have reminded me of how crucial strong, compassionate leadership is. I’ve been watching a former coworker take on a leadership role in her community - a community she’s only recently moved to. She didn’t wait for someone else to act. Instead, she rose to the occasion, working with others to provide support and care in the aftermath of the storm. It’s been inspiring to witness, especially knowing that the hardest part is often what happens after the news crews leave and the immediate attention fades. True leadership is about being willing to step up, even when it’s uncomfortable but it’s also about working alongside others in positions of leadership to ensure the best outcomes for everyone. The impact of this hurricane will be felt for a long time but seeing my colleague’s proactive and collaborative approach to leading her community through this difficult time has reminded me that leadership isn’t about waiting - it’s about acting, learning, and building stronger communities together. As we continue to face the challenges ahead, it’s important to remember - leadership isn’t about being the loudest or the most visible; it’s about being there when it matters most and working with others to make a lasting difference. I want to give a special shout-out to Angela Greene for stepping up when her community needed her. So, let's clear up a few common myths—and see the reality behind them. Myth #1: AI Will Replace All Human Roles Ever worry that AI's going to come in, take over, and leave us all out of jobs? It's a big fear, but the truth is, AI's role is more supportive than that. Reality: AI is here to handle the boring, repetitive stuff. When AI takes over those routine tasks, it frees people up to do work that actually requires a human touch. Instead of replacing us, AI's more like a helpful team member, working behind the scenes so we can focus on high-level strategy, innovation, and those things that only humans can provide. Myth #2: AI is Complicated to Implement Yes, there are AI tools and solutions that are complicated and require tech-savvy or highly-trained users. But there are also simpler solutions: while a lot is going on under the hood, the simple user interface and ease of use make both implementation and onboarding quick and easy. Reality: You just need to find the AI solution that matches the level of complexity your organization is ready for. AI is actually far more accessible than people think. Many businesses start with a pilot program in one department, see how it goes, and then expand from there. This gradual approach keeps costs manageable and lets you test the waters before diving in headfirst. Myth #3: AI is Costly and Only for Large Enterprises A lot of smaller companies think AI is something costly and complex that only big corporations can afford or implement, leaving SMEs on the sidelines. But it's no longer something that only huge companies with massive budgets and tech teams can afford. Reality: AI has come a long way, and it's more affordable and adaptable than ever. Many AI platforms today are specifically tailored to small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). AI can help SMEs improve customer service, streamline inventory, manage workloads—things that small businesses care about just as much as big ones do. In fact, for SMEs, AI can be a huge competitive advantage, letting them scale smart without ballooning overhead. Why Breaking Down These Myths Matters If we can get past the misconceptions, we can see AI for what it really is: a powerful, flexible tool that's there to help us grow and adapt. What resonated with me is Tom Fishburne writing about a CEO comment “interpreting the strategy through the lens of the function”lends to disconnect. That’s reality, and that’s what makes the diligent communication and efforts to create clarity so difficult. You literally, as a leader, need to put yourself in the shoes of each function you communicate with and try to connect their roles to the strategy. Not easy. Not quick. It takes a lot of effort, mentally and time wise. This is where “nested strategies” come into place. Once the corporate strategy is completed, next level leaders should construct a “nested” strategy for their particular function that ladders up to the overall corporate strategy. In effect the “nested functional team strategy” is next level down from the corporate strategy and essentially are the tactics. Rinse and repeat through each level and you have the common line through the plans. Easy to write, hard to do. But - it works.
