It’s undeniable that the current health disparities at the local levels are increasing, and more individuals are falling through the cracks. Now, more than ever, we must harness innovation and collaboration to address these health disparities and improve equitable access to care for everyone. In my recent interview with Michael Gibney from PharmaVoice, we explored how AI is becoming a game-changer in tackling health disparities in cancer care. From pioneering screening initiatives to data-driven insights, the opportunities in leveraging AI to bridge the gap in health outcomes is endless. Innovation isn't just about developing ground-breaking treatments; it's about making sure those breakthroughs reach all populations who needs them. Everyone, regardless of their ZIP code, deserves access to cutting-edge cancer treatments. AI presents a tremendous opportunity to address these disparities head-on. Collaborating with diagnostic companies and AI innovators, we're using data to expose the disparities in care and address screening and access issues head-on. Our goal is steadfast: to leave no one behind in the battle against cancer. The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (#CMS) has partnered with Vertex Pharmaceuticals and bluebird bio to enhance patient access to their gene therapies. 🌟Outcome-Based Payments: CMS will link payments to the effectiveness of these therapies in improving patient health outcomes. 🚑Medicaid Focus: The agreements target patients enrolled in Medicaid, the government-backed insurance program. 💰Addressing High Costs: Gene therapies can be extremely expensive, sometimes exceeding $1 million per treatment. These agreements aim to make such treatments more affordable and accessible. ⛑️Initial Focus on Sickle Cell Disease: The first priority under this model is sickle cell disease, a condition that disproportionately affects Black Americans, with about half of the affected individuals enrolled in Medicaid. This initiative reflects CMS's commitment to innovative payment models that improve access to high-cost, life-changing therapies for patients in need.

The idea that you can plan a clinical trial and pick 5 different technologies and safely, effectively bring them together in a relatively short space of time should be discussed further in the industry. Poor integration - technology, processes and people - result in demonstrably negative effects. We have even achieved a status quo where integration is not even considered a requirement (e.g. EDC <-- --> ePRO). We must do better.

We all want to make #clinicaltrials more efficient, effective and inclusive. AI can help. ZS’s Ronald Du, James Gordon, Ashley Phuong and Shelley Liu share how members of our Clinical Feasibility Consortium say #AI can optimize trial design and planning. I found their observation that organizations can use AI to bridge the gap between expected outcomes and actual results to be particularly insightful. Of course, incorporating AI in trial design and planning won’t be as easy as flipping a switch. Some team members may be reluctant to embrace AI, as they could have misperceptions around its value, disagreements about who should own and control it and questions about AI’s impact on human identity and organizational roles.
