I’ve spent $3,891 on Linkedin ads and driven 9,155 clicks at an average CPC of $0.43. We’ve acquired 88 free RB2B users for $40.43 who (at 9% free-to-paid) are $444 CAC, and over $2.5k LTV (5.6x ROAS). Here’s the breakdown: BACKGROUND: I started working with Understory last month. Ever since Samantha McKenna told me she was: 1. Running LinkedIn Thought Leadership ads 2. Getting SUPER cheap clicks back to a landing page 3. Retargeting those cheap clicks with RB2B and booking demos I have been wildly intrigued. But I had ONE hesitation... Would these ads negatively impact my organic reach? There was only one way to find out. _______ THE PLAN: - $10k media budget month 1 - Mix of my posts, other peoples’ UGC - Mix of CTA (hard, soft, AND no CTA at all) - 4 Audiences: Sales, Marketers, Founders, LeadGen Agenices Understory went at it, and we had our first bi-weekly meeting last Monday. Did anyone else see a similar drop around this time? _______ INSIGHTS: 1. The SALES persona is $284/conversion. I’m not surprised, they can’t buy our tech, marketing does 2. The FOUNDER persona is the cheapest conversion - 22 at $33.33. I’m also not surprised, they are my real die-hard fans, and they move quickly 3. The Outbound Agency persona had the MOST conversions - 37 at $33.96. This audience has the best potential for UGC virality with us. 4. The posts about SALES drive the most conversions, but NOT from salespeople. _______ TAKEAWAY: I’m captivated by the concept of Thought Leadership ads. The fact that you can create a piece of content that you KNOW LinkedIn loves... Then put AD SPEND behind it… If you can create great organic content that your prospects love, NOBODY, no matter how big, can compete with your ability to generate awareness. This is the ultimate leveling force between the little guy and mammoth brands. And makes the ability to create great organic content the most powerful force in the world today. What would I do if I had zero followers and were just getting started? I’d start posting. Every day. Not for engagement, not for leads, not for deals. I’d post because the sooner you start, the sooner you’ll find your voice. And in 2024, finding your voice gives you the keys to the kingdom.

"We turned $5k into $1M in ad revenue in just 30 days!" ...said no legitimate agency, ever. We've fielded several conversations lately from DTC startups with massive growth expectations and disproportionately low budgets. We've had to have "the talk" about why that's a recipe for disappointment. First, paid media shouldn't be the initial focus for new brands. It's a powerful growth lever, but it's most effective when you've already laid the appropriate foundation with email, automations, etc., and have some organic momentum. Second, building brand awareness and driving immediate ROAS are not the same thing. These are different goals with distinct campaign strategies, creative executions... and budgets. In many categories like apparel, you can't skip the first step and race to the bottom. Third, you need to budget for sustained ad spend to get the flywheel spinning. You can't realistically expect this month's sales to fuel next month's campaigns. It takes time and budget to build up data for both humans and machines to optimize. If you're trying to bootstrap with just a few thousand dollars a month, PPC might not be the best use of your resources. Instead, explore digital PR, content marketing, social media, or affiliate programs. Here's the hard truth: building a brand takes time and sustained investment. There's no magic bullet that will guarantee you'll go viral or 10x your revenue in 30 days. Anyone promising that is selling snake oil. The number 1 oversight I see… That’s limiting DTC revenue growth: Poor budget management. If you want to unlock growth for your brand Here’s exactly what you need to do. Let’s start with a simple breakdown of traffic. Cold traffic ↳ Converts less Warm traffic ↳ Converts better Hot traffic ↳ Converts best Now, as you increase a campaign’s daily budget You start breaking into different levels of traffic. Let’s analyse spend to see how this works. $100/day = 100% hot traffic = ROAS 5 $200/day = 100% hot and warm traffic = ROAS 4 $300/day = 100% hot, warm and cold traffic = ROAS 3 These numbers are examples and will differ for your account. But do you see the relationship between spend and performance? As you spend more… Google will show your ads to a broader audience… Which converts at a lower rate than your initial warmer audience. Increasing spend, whilst decreasing ROAS and profitable revenue. Here’s the key: You need to find the sweet spot for each campaign. Where scale meets profitability. 🌶️ Hot take: if your brand is doing under $5m/year, investing in CRO is a waste of money. You're much better off building a solid landing page, optimizing your PDP and focusing your efforts, time and money on your paid acquisition. CRO is just not going to move the needle as much as you're hoping at this stage. I'm sure there are exceptions to this, but I've seen countless brands scale past $5m/yr with one solid lander and a best in class paid acquisition strategy. And I've also had 3 clients invest 5 figs/mo in CRO for 6 months and the results have been minimal. At this stage you should focus on: ✅ Great offers ✅ How to fuel a profitable paid acquisition machine that scales ✅ UGC Content & Creatives ✅ Influencer marketing ✅ A well rounded retention strategy There are so many levers you can pull to get you to 8 figures. Not saying CRO is not valuable, but is it the one thing that's going to move the needle forward at the rate you'd like it to right now? Probably not. P.S. Jones Road forecasted $150mil+ in revenue in 2024. They have one of the best customer journey funnels I've seen in DTC. So, I made a detailed breakdown of their funnel. (no comment needed, just continue reading.) 1) Top of the Funnel - Acquisition They're running a mix of UGC, advertorials, and before & after ads on Meta. Here are some key points about their ads: -> Focus is on selling an outcome, not a product. -> Their creatives grab attention instantly. -> Testimonials + social proof to spark interest. Their ads lead to a pre-sale listicle. 2) Middle of the Funnel - Education They've nailed customer segmentation. They're not trying to sell to a cold audience. Here's what they're doing: -> Educating people on a solution, not selling -> Using a listicle to build trust + show authority -> Nailing customer messaging + solution angle Their listicle is extremely well-thought out. 3) Listicle Breakdown (by sections) Three Reasons Why -> Showcase the USPs of the product -> Address main concerns & questions -> Display social proof Product Buying Section -> Display the ingredients & how to use -> A strong CTA that leads to a quiz Note From Founder -> Using a popular name to increase authority Three Benefits -> Solving a problem that customers have -> Hitting the main customer pain points Social Proof & Reviews -> Showing normal people reviews, not just celebrities -> Keeping it minimal because their ads nail this part How To Use Instructions -> Final step to show how easy the product is to use 4) Middle of the Funnel - Quiz A simple, six-step quiz to collect data & personalize the sell. Here's why it's great: -> Collects zero-party data that can be used on emails -> Gets people on the email list & allows retargeting -> Personalizes the final 'sell' The key here is for the quiz to be simple. It has 6 steps and the questions are all easy. 5) Bottom of the Funnel - Suggestions & Cart The funnel ends with a page that suggests products based on the answers in the quiz. It has a simple cart page with a 'free shipping' progress bar to further increase the AOV. If people abandon cart, they can retarget because they've collected their emails.
