TITEL: mirage DATE: 2024 MEDIUM: ratchet tape & velvet ribbon attached to wonder mesh SIZE: 60cm x 85cm (8 works) In my artistic exploration, I delve into the intricate web of global consumption and waste, shedding light on the relentless transportation of discarded items across the world. This body of work serves as a visual narrative of the surplus production that exceeds our consumption capacities, leading to the extensive movement of goods in search of markets willing to accept them. The ratchet tape, sourced from the urban landscape of downtown Durban, finds a new life in my creations as it intertwines with silver wonder mesh. Through a process of deliberate placement and meticulous machine stitching, the tape disrupts the fabric's surface, evoking the fluidity of rippling water. This juxtaposition gives rise to an ethereal vision of a net adrift in water, capturing and ensnaring objects that fatefully become entangled within it. Introducing vintage velvet ribbon, once a symbol of opulence in the world of fashion, now relegated to obscurity as deadstock in the bustling markets of Johannesburg's CBD. Its journey spanning vast distances echoes the transient nature of material goods, ultimately succumbing to decay and becoming discarded remnants of a bygone era. By merging these disparate materials across a temporal spectrum of approximately half a century, my work prompts reflection on the absurdity of importing unnecessary goods. The convergence of these elements in a singular moment crystallizes broader inquiries into our consumption patterns and the consequences of our relentless pursuit of novelty and abundance. Through this artistic dialogue, I invite viewers to contemplate the hidden narratives embedded within the artifacts of our disposable culture and reconsider the true costs of our insatiable appetite for material possessions. Benay Gursoy Toykoc from Penn State University's ForMat Lab will be discussing her lab's research into the exploration of emergent forms generated by the uncertainties in 3D Printing procceses, at CDFAM - Computational Design Symposium in NYC. How through controlled experiments and feedback loops, these variations may be tuned to produce forms not easily 'designed' with 3D modeling. Core77 published a fun and interesting look/ read about color theory (Sourced from a book published in 1930). It had recommendations for factories to create comfort for people with monotonous occupations. It also covers schools and medical environments. I love the illustrations and also the human-centered thought (and science). In 1810 Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749 - 1832 CE) first linked color to psychological and behavioral impacts. However, the Egyptians also had strong associations with color and healing, as well defined meanings, theorized/documented by archeologists. No doubt many ancient societies/communities used color for healing and behavior modification. Native American, Inuit, Arab, Persian, and other indigenous populations also used color for meaning and/or healing. I'm fascinated by the many dimensions of color! Huedata Inc. has been creating an LLM/AI system for 10 (or more?) years, using historical evidence and science. They offer consulting services and fee-based access to their unique color recommendations tool for product, brand, etc. They are also studying use for color as an intervention tool for global issues. It's incredibly important to recognize that ID is a field almost as male dominated as engineering is and it's even more important to learn about the steps we can take to make the filed more equitable Top 3 facts that stood out to me: 1. 51% of ID grads are women, but women only make up 28% of Industrial Designers     2. The percentage of women in ID has decreased from 30.77% in 2010 to 18.6% in 2021     3. I had the privilege of being one of the speakers at 2024 Aiga Design Conference, AIGA Design, where we tackled some of the most pressing issues shaping the future of design today. One of the key themes was around margins and marginality, emphasizing the importance of giving space to underrepresented voices, non-Western design histories, and design practices that live outside the mainstream. We also explored inclusivity and accessibility, addressing the need to create design systems that work for everyone, including neurodivergent individuals, differently-abled persons, and historically excluded communities. Another exciting theme was community-centered and co-creation design, where we discussed how involving communities in the design process leads to more relevant and empowering outcomes. Decolonizing design and challenging traditional Eurocentric conventions was a recurring topic, pushing us all to think about how to create a truly global and inclusive design practice. The discussions around design as a tool for social change were particularly inspiring, highlighting how design can amplify marginalized voices, tackle systemic inequalities, and drive societal progress. The focus on cultural representation, narrative storytelling, and technological innovation showcased how we can preserve cultural identities and histories through design, while also addressing the ethical implications of our work in the digital era. Overall, it was an inspiring event that reminded me of the critical role design can play in shaping a more inclusive, equitable, and impactful future for all.
