Exciting to see startups aiming to use AI to discover chemicals, materials, drugs, etc. Semi companies have taken notice: AMD is investing in and Cadence is acquiring them. Semi/EDA companies have broken out by becoming critical path, whether it’s through critical software, packaging, IP, design kits from foundries, or user communities. Aside from just making it easy to make new materials, these “AI for making X” companies also need to articulate a vision as to how they can establish monopolistic positions in their industries.

OpenAI CEO, Sam Altman, is thinking about changing the company to a fully for-profit model 💰 If this happens, it could bring some big changes! First, it would mean that OpenAI’s current non-profit board would no longer make the decisions. This would make OpenAI more like its competitors, such as Elon Musk’s xAI and Amazon-backed Anthropic, which are both for-profit companies. However, these discussions are still in progress, and the final decision hasn't been made yet. So, nothing is certain at this point. What do you think will change? Will it be for better or for worse? The most downloaded datasets from the California HHS site? If you follow me on LinkedIn, you've probably guessed it - the Medi-Cal enrolled provider list and Suspended and Ineligible list are the top two, followed by other datasets by a wide margin. The California Health & Human Services Agency (Cal HHS) has a nice data hosting site that resembles data.cms.gov. The site looks slick and provides interesting insights, including visitor statistics and download metrics. It's fascinating to see how people are interested in provider eligibility and exclusion data for Medi-Cal billing. Looking at how organizations use these public datasets, compliance emerges as the dominant use case. This makes sense - when accessing government data portals, users are typically verifying facts related to government programs. The user base spans health plans, hospitals, IPAs, medical groups, and even commercial payers, as Medicaid suspensions often trigger reviews across the healthcare ecosystem. What's interesting is that this pattern extends beyond healthcare. On data.ca.gov, which hosts all kinds of government data, the most downloaded dataset is the directory of certified electricians. This shows a consistent theme - whether it's healthcare providers or electricians, people come to government sites primarily to verify professional credentials and eligibility. This raises an intriguing observation about how government data is used. The way organizations use these datasets - downloading lists to verify credentials and eligibility - is functionally similar to what modern Identity Provider (IdP) systems do, but through a much more manual process. Interesting conversation between Jason Calacanis and Tekedra N. Mawakana Mawakana, CEO of Waymo (Google's self-driving project).... (Paraphrased) Jason Calacanis: Why are you not testing your Waymo self-driving on highways? You seem focused primarily on city environments like San Francisco, yet in my experience being a tesla-owner from the very beginning (and using both auto-pilot and then full self driving) it is better on the highways. You seem to be taking the opposite approach. Is it because speed kills? Tekedra: Our mission is safety and to get to Level 4 driving (the highest level of autonomous driving, no driver behind the wheel, no drivers' license) and so we’ve made a deliberate decision to focus on crowded urban environments because that is the hardest problem. Anything that doesn’t contribute to our getting to Level 4 is not interesting to us (not intended, but could be back-handed compliment to Musk 🙂) You don’t learn anything new self-driving on the same boring monotonous highways. --- Great point! #waymo #allin #selfdriving #google

🧩 One thing we've noticed with #VentureIQ technology is how well it can distill and communicate complex technical material 🧩 Whether it's a #deeptech venture, a novel #AI application, or even a patent submission, we can quickly distill the business and strategic implications for investors...and sometimes even the founders/PIs themselves! 🤯 Based on our work so far, the tech can handle a wide array of research areas and technological sectors -- anything from blockchain algorithms to vaccine development. It handles the nuance of the field, the specific terminology, and extracts the key concepts which matter for venture-building. 🤓 To demonstrate, I took a patent I helped write with Eric Laber on reinforcement learning. AI, Longevity and Love - how are they all connected? They make each other better and are essential to each other’s success Lots of fantastic discussions about how AI will bring out the best in humans including augmenting our time and ability to connect at DOC in Napa and Wisdom 2.0 in SF this past week. Huge thanks to Jordan Shlain, MD, Kevin Ryan and John Battelle for organizing leaders across traditional medicine, longevity, academic research, and biotech and Soren Gordhamer and Mark Hyman, MD for bringing together the best of AI and longevity AI shows incredible promise for healing humans and increasing longevity, here are my key takeaways from these events: We can live to 95 today if we focus on longevity and healthspan, there are biotech solutions using AI to epigenetically reprogram cells to reverse aging and disease that will enable us to extend lifespan by 20+ years but it will take for these to be real Fun to see Mark Hyman, MD interview Eric Verdin, they both discussed how they lowered their biological age by 10+ years and feel the best ever There are so many simple things we can do, walking 30 minutes a day reduces cardiovascular, alzheimer’s and cancer risk by 40% but 80% of the US doesn’t even do this Within 5 years we will have a whole new set of FDA approved psychedelic drugs for depression, anxiety, PTSD, etc. Immunotherapies will also expand so we can avoid chemo and living cancer free will be in reach We need the US to move to a functional medicine, integrative care model and get out of this sick care model, this level of innovation is more likely to come from upstarts, the incumbents have too much revenues to lose in this transition AI will not replace physicians, instead those physicians that don’t use AI will be replaced. 50% of physicians are burned out, AI can help! PDFs + LLMs will be the QR code of B2B. So much of business-to-business interactions involve data trapped in PDFs — medical data, government data, transaction data. Even though it is "digital", it isn't easily computer readable, until now. Large language models make it easy to convert this into nicely structured data that can be used for decision-making. This means that hospitals, governments, real-estate developers, industrial farms, etc can continue publishing information in PDFs, and the consumers of that information will use LLMs (or apps built on LLMs) instead of painstakingly reading the PDF.
