I am delighted to share an enlightening article from Insight250 CEO Crispin Beale on the insight trends beyond AI. AI is dominating our conversation at the moment, so it is useful to remember the real issues that are impacting on our industry and effecting clients' businesses. I was particularly pleased to see Sir Martin Sorrell's perspective on the vital importance of measurement. At a time when CMOs are under increasing pressure to measure the impact of activity, the traditional metrics we have used for decades, like Share of Voice and Media Reach are eroding in their usefulness. When Crispin contacted me, I shared with him a Google Trend chart on search for Share of Voice (SOV) versus Share of Experience (SOE) - which he has kindly included - and was interested to see how SOE has been growing in popularity. Back in 2014 Keith Weed (CMO, Unilever at the time), wrote in an HBR article with other colleagues "we believe that the most important marketing metric will soon change from "share of wallet" or "share of voice" to "share of experience."" We are finding Share of Experience to be a superhero metric that has an extremely strong correlation with market share, and is helping clients to shine a light on how present their brand is in a real world context. I would love to hear more about marketing metric challenges that people are facing and the solutions that are helping them to address these. Been awhile. It's certainly been a very busy 2024 for Farrell Insight. The big news continues to be the excellent global research pairing between Farrell Insight and the great Marketing team at Kore.ai. In Q2 of 2024 we launched our first pair of Global Benchmark studies looking at the ongoing evolution of Automated Intelligent Assistants in the world of Consumers and Call Center Agents. Both studies have featured surveys fielded in the US, the UK, Germany, India, Japan, Indonesia, The Philippines and Australia. The headlines across both studies can be summed up easily - it's TIPPING POINT TIME. I was honoured to co-present a synopsis of findings with Kore.ai's SVP, Marketing, Abhijit Mhetre at the annual global Kore Konversations conference in Orlando, Florida back in April, 2024. When I read a book that educates and inspires business success, I have to share it with other people. Today, that book is by Brett Townsend and Tim Hoskins and is called, “Insights on the Brink: Revitalizing the Market Research and Analytics Industry.” The struggle it addresses is summarized with this quote: “Consumer insights is, almost without exception, classified as nonworking dollars, meaning that we’re considered a cost center instead of a revenue-generating part of the business. So from the get-go, we’re fighting an uphill battle to prove our value.” Many of the concepts resonated deeply with my real-world experience, deeply held beliefs, and lifelong passion. Research insights, analytics, and collaboration are the foundation for driving business impact. We hold the key to unlocking opportunities for change, growth, and transformation—yet we often resist the changes needed to fully unleash that potential. Insights on the Brink challenges the traditional mindsets and practices of our industry, urging us to rethink how we approach our work. It offers fresh ideas and innovative methods that help us achieve the meaningful impact we strive for but don’t always attain. Here are a few excerpts that truly resonated with me. Every time I re-read them, I find myself internally shouting, "YES! Yes! The WSJ excellently detailed today’s battle for space in supermarket and grocery aisles. As stores increasingly stock shelves with their own brands, CPG and food companies vie for a shrinking number of spots — in addition to prime shelf placement and location. But once brands secure coveted shelf space, how do they isolate what causes consumers to buy or not when at the shelf? To date, CPG and food brands have addressed this challenge by sending workers to retail stores to verify in-stock position as well as placement, pricing, and promotion. California's biggest risk of the next 20 years - running off two of the primary economic drivers. California policy makers need to think hard about it’s long term economic prospects because policies are having a negative impact on two key groups – founders that start companies and the leaders that scale them. Without them, it's hard for economies of any size to find growth. Let's start with Silicon Valley, which was built by founders and builders in PC chips with Intel, networking with Cisco, enterprise databases with Oracle, search with Google, social networking with Facebook, and consumer devices with Apple. So how do things look in 2024? AI is the new Bay Area tech segment, especially with $50B in venture capital last year. But other key segments have moved elsewhere. Arizona leads in autonomous driving. Crypto-currency is largely outside of California because of cheaper energy elsewhere. Virginia put the most data center square footage in in 2023. Joby, a leader in drone taxis, chose to relocate from Monterey to Dayton to build out 2 million square feet of high-end avionics manufacturing. High-profile founders like Elon Musk have relocated Tesla and Twitter to Texas. All told, 352 companies with over 100 employees have left California in the last decade and the move out rate is accelerating and none of the same size companies have relocated into California. Over half relocated to Texas. California’s next generation of builders and founders is leaving California in real time. So how does it look in ag and food? In 2023 California ag gdp was $59.4 billion and the top 10 commodities were all over $1 billion. Because of California’s lead in specialty crop production, many AgTech companies chose to locate all or big parts of their team here. Our ability to keep them here depends on our ability to keep the acreage here. California lost over 60,000 acres of asparagus production in 40 years and the production facilities and AgTech in fields and facilities all left the state thanks largely to NAFTA and labor policy cost increases. How bad is the acreage exodus? From 1997 to 2022, USDA Census data show that California lost 4.6 M ag acres (16% of the total) and 24,857 farms (28% of the total). Straight line these numbers for another 30 years and the numbers go to 9 M acres lost and 45,300 farms lost for 55 years – 32% of acreage and 52% of farms. These numbers could get worse because of a few key policy factors: (1) lack of investment in water storage and maintenance; (2) net zero policies that decrease reliability and increase power costs; and (3) labor policies that increase minimum wage and AEWR and class action friendly PAGA rules. Essential AI Tip researchers: Like many of my fellow market research and customer insights friends, I have been experimenting with AI for analyzing unstructured data (so far, mostly text from IDIs and survey OEs). Very interesting, stunningly fast, usually about 80% "correct" on thematic analysis, but wow you have to be precise. >>> ⏰ Key lesson for those just getting started--let me save you some heartache 💔 Always tell the AI (ChatGPT, Claude, whatever you use): "Using only the provided data, ....". For example: "Using only the provided data, identify six themes related to product X purchase deterrents, with three supporting quotes per theme." Otherwise it will "inform" its analysis by additional data sources. And asking for supporting quotes makes it easy for me to go and spot check that A) those quotes do exist and B) that I agree with how they were used to identify a theme. 🤖 🤖 🤖 #AI #marketresearch #cxresearch #consumerinsights #mrx

This MediaVillage.org article by Bill Harvey highlights the value in using search as a leading sales indicator and key data source in forecasting business impact. This is something I’ve been championing for the past two decades. Nearly 20 years ago, we started developing statistical correlations to demonstrate the immediate impact TV had on brand interest and to create a diagnostic tool for understanding deviations from normative benchmarks. This helped many clients understand how media was interconnected and why having a search strategy – something that was novel at the time – was critical to brand growth. These analytics proved particularly insightful during a pitch for a major distilled spirits’ company. Our analysis revealed a significant variance in the correlation between TV and branded searches during the period reviewed (R = -0.24) versus the prior two years (R = 0.40). We dug into this further and discovered the brand had recently launched a new ad campaign, the only notable change in the brand's marketing activity. Our conclusion: The brand had lost its mojo. The new campaign was not resonating with audiences as well as past campaigns, which in turn, led to depressed consumer interest and ultimately, sales. The client's response? "You identified in a couple weeks what has taken us months to figure out." Today, leveraging search data has never been easier.
