Striking without warning and leaving scant clues about its cause, it has defied all attempts to unlock its secret, casting a shadow of fear over every family with a newborn. SIDS is the sudden and unexplained death of an infant who is younger than 1 year old. Most SIDS deaths are associated with sleep and infants who die of SIDS show no signs of suffering. A lack of answers is part of what makes sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) so frightening. SIDS is the leading cause of death among infants 1 month to 1 year old. It remains unpredictable despite years of research. Growing public awareness of SIDS and precautions to prevent it should leave fewer parents searching for answers in the future. Research is key to solving this mystery.

We believe that the solution to SIDS is finally within reach. It is our sincere hope that our work is a bold step to solving a lifelong medical mystery once and for all and giving back to the world infants that die before their time.
•SIDS remains one of the foremost causes of infant death in the United States.
•It has continued to remain a medical mystery despite other great medical advances.
•We are still unable to identify infants at risk until a fatal event occurs.
•Education has also not prevented SIDS.
•All groups of society are at risk although low socio-economic groups and Native American and African American populations are at most risk.
•Families are devastated by this phenomenon.
•Parents frequently second guess what happened and imagine what they could have done to prevent it.
•A non-smoking environment and laying the baby on its back are things that can help; yet babies still die from SIDS when parents address these.

  • Antarctica: A Photographic Journey

This book is a compilation of some of my favorite photographs of the amazing scenery and wildlife the world has to offer. From Ushuaia, Argentina, the southernmost city in the world, to the Falkland Islands, South Georgia, Saint Andrews Bay, and the Antarctica continent, these are some of the most special places on earth. As Andrew Denton aptly said, “If Antarctica were music, it would be Mozart. Art, and it would be Michelangelo. Literature, and it would be Shakespeare. And yet it is something…

And yet it is something even greater; the only place on Earth that is still as it should be. May we never tame it.”

All proceeds from this book are being donated to the Aaron Matthew SIDS Research Guild of Seattle Children’s Hospital, in honor of our son Aaron Matthew Kahan who died of SIDS in October of 2003. SIDS is the sudden and unexplained death of an infant younger than a year old. SIDS is the leading cause of death among infants 1 month to 1-year old in all developed countries. Most SIDS deaths are associated with sleep, and infants who die of SIDS show no signs of suffering. SIDS strikes without warning and leaves scant clues about its cause. It not only haunts parents like us who lost a child to SIDS, but casts a shadow of fear over every parent.

Your purchase of this book contributes to life-saving discoveries that will give parents peace of mind and a new outcome for our beautiful children.
