Ofcom recently published telecoms market data for the UK. https://lnkd.in/ehJa-5Xf 🔗 It shows mobile data growth rates of only 15% over the last year. Mobile data growth rates are slowing and at a rapid rate. Interestingly, mobile revenues in the UK increased 6.6% from the same period a year earlier. ARPU increased from £12.52 in 2022 up to £13.05, bucking the trend of years of steady decline. This increase is thanks, in no small part, to inflation-linked price increases from the major operators. Historic predictions out of Ofcom in 2022 offered data growth scenarios up to 55% by now. I wonder how many MNOs considered this data when assessing the ROI of 5G implementations! The debate continues about whether 5G is actually needed by the 98% of ‘normal’ users, where 4G seems perfectly sufficient. However, one could argue that the UK is still predominantly not sufficiently 5G SA, and therefore, do 5G users experience the full benefits 5G has to offer yet? The data growth story gets skewed when looking at a global view where countries with large populations are still experiencing significant growth. Ericsson is putting numbers out like 59Gb by 2029 in Western Europe. Ofcom shows growth from Q3-Q4 2023 was only 1.5%, or 6% if annualised. So question marks arise over Ericsson’s view❓. What is apparent from Ofcom is that data growth rates in many mature markets are decreasing. What will be the new device or use case that drives growth again? Question for the day. Is a wholesale market for 5G network slices a good opportunity for differentiating an IoT MVNO? I'm digging into the intersection of 5G Stand Alone and IoT at the moment. Predominantly what monetisation opportunities there are for MNOs in 5G overall and particularly SA, and specific to IoT. So digging into things like RedCap (again!), Network Exposure Function, APIs, QoS, SLAs, cellular V2X, and a bunch of other things. Alongside dedicated slices for specific organisations (or e.g. emergency services) and functions (e.g. latency), there's also likely to be a wholesale market. So, perhaps, MNOs selling an optimised IoT-oriented slice for MVNOs. Which would create something of a two-tier IoT MVNO market. Can you provide high grade connectivity or is your offering just based on regular wholesale (or, indeed, someone else's wholesale)? Would anyone care? Maybe if it's marketed well enough. Having something that is a recognised term for a higher QoS/reliability/capability should presumably be appealing to customers. I can't help but note, though, that most enterprise customers have been conspicuously incapable of discerning the difference between a cheap and cheerful sponsored-roaming-based offering where disconnection or similar headaches aren't far away, and a robust offering based on local carrier agreements. So maybe they don't really care. Or maybe no-one ever quite came up with the right term for 'this is something you'd rely on' vs 'this is something you wouldn't'. When does it matter? Not for a long time since MVNOs operate overwhelmingly on n-1 generation and we have 10+ years of LTE still to go. But in a 5G world, maybe it does matter eventually.

Working with their members, the GSMA has set out a vision for change in the sector. It’s a vision where refurbishment and repair extends the lifetime of devices and network equipment. An industry where equipment and devices are made with 100% recyclable and recycled content, where we use 100% renewable energy and where no device ends up as waste. With this in mind the GSMA, alongside industry partners, has launched two major initiatives in the past year to help accelerate change. The first is the GSMA Equipment Marketplace (https://lnkd.in/e-BG2VQE), a global digital marketplace to source, reuse, resell, and recycle pre-owned telecommunications network equipment. It gives operators and equipment manufacturers a platform to achieve financial and environmental sustainability. Early adopters, such as Vodafone, have successfully used the platform providing them with new revenue and cost savings, while also helping reduce their carbon footprint. The service was launched in February 2024 and there is already eight operators using GSMA Equipment Marketplace.

Many #LTE networks have been launched using #midband #spectrum, and operators and regulators have come to recognise the value of mid-band spectrum for #5G networks with its combination of #coverage and #capacity. As the rapid commercial introduction of 5G continues and demand for bandwidth continues to rise rapidly in both LTE and 5G networks, telecom regulators around the world are working to free up more spectrum for services. Including those underway, there are 20 spectrum auctions potentially taking place during the remainder of 2024. With many other countries and territories still to set out their 5G licensing strategies, we expect more will follow in 2025. GSA will track and report on progress in future updates of this report.
