The Rapid Growth of Pix in Brazil: A Financial Revolution In a remarkably short span of time, Pix, Brazil’s instant payment system, has revolutionized the way people transfer money and make payments. Launched by the Central Bank of Brazil in November 2020, Pix has experienced rapid adoption across the country, quickly becoming a dominant force in the Brazilian payments landscape. What is Pix? Pix is a digital payment system that allows individuals, businesses, and government entities to make and receive payments in real-time, 24/7, using a mobile device or a computer. Unprecedented Adoption Rates The growth of Pix has been nothing short of extraordinary. Within just a few months of its launch, millions of Brazilians began using Pix for everyday transactions. By mid-2023, over 142 million people—more than 65% of the country's population—had registered for Pix, according to the Central Bank of Brazil.

Earlier this month, our continental European Head of Merchant Services, Julia Lopez Fernandez spoke at the payments forum on innovation in payments in Europe “II Jornada AECOC Cecabank de Medios de Pago” in Madrid. I just read this article regarding the launching of Visa's new consumer payments products on 5/15/24 "designed to make the issuer’s mobile banking app the center of digital commerce for their customers. The cornerstone of these seven new products — and their strategic intent — is to integrate identity with payments to create a seamless and secure digital payment experience for consumers, merchants and banks. The essence of the announcement centers around tokenized credentials issued by a bank. These seven products will give issuers an opportunity to turn their mobile banking apps into their own branded mobile wallet." They state that the one service that will "have the biggest implication for consumers is the introduction of Visa Payment Passkey Service, which confirms a consumer’s identity and authorizes online payments with a facial or fingerprint scan. When shopping online, passkeys replace the need for passwords or one-time codes, enabling more streamlined, secure transactions." This is an interesting concept and can tie directly to a users' mobile banking app. If a fraudster takes over your mobile device, I would think this enables them to have an easier time perpetrating fraud.
