Led by Markus Renschler, MD, Light Horse Therapeutics has made significant progress in the oncology space with a $62M #SeriesA funding round led by MPM BioImpact and Omega Funds, alongside Novartis Venture Fund. This marks a big step for their work in developing LHT-001, a promising candidate targeting critical cancer pathways. In parallel, their partnership with Novartis could be worth up to $1B, combining Light Horse's innovative pipeline with Novartis' expertise in oncology drug development and commercialization. We started out Q1 with cautious optimism and the numbers continue to show the confidence was warranted. Biopharma M&A activity more than doubled nationally during the year’s first three months, coinciding with a rebound in venture capital deals as well as a flurry of IPOs. These are all good signs that the drug development cycle is normalizing and should translate into additional funding being available at the seed and Series A stages. “Under the terms of the agreement, Hengrui Pharma is eligible to receive upfront and milestone payments totaling $1.045 billion, including a $75m upfront fee, up to $200m in development and regulatory milestone payments, plus commercial success-based milestones. Hengrui is also eligible to receive mid-single to low-double digit royalties on net sales outside of Greater China. The upfront and projected research and development costs, including potential milestone payments, does not change the earlier provided IDEAYA guided cash out runway of at least 2028.” Deal making does not stop during the holidays. “Candid Therapeutics, Inc. (“Candid”), a clinical-stage biotechnology company focused on becoming the leader in advancing T-cell engagers for autoimmune and inflammatory diseases, announced today an agreement with WuXi Biologics under which Candid will have exclusive global rights to a preclinical trispecific T-cell Engager discovered at WuXi Biologics’ proprietary universal multispecific antibody platform WuXiBodyTM. Candid plans to complete IND enabling studies to enable first-in-human studies in the first half of 2026.” New US biotech getting its pipeline started through a collaboration with a China based discovery engine. 💊 #Wegovy Advances in #MASH Treatment but Faces Limits as a Long-Term Solution GLP-1s strike again... ❗ Wegovy’s results offer meaningful progress in addressing MASH, a complex and increasingly prevalent #liverdisease that currently lacks effective long-term treatments. However, while #GLP-1 receptor agonists like semaglutide show promise, they’re unlikely to revolutionize MASH management on their own, as evidenced by modest fibrosis improvement and the need for polypharmacy to address multifaceted disease pathways. This outcome aligns with broader trends in the field, where combination #therapies appear crucial to tackling the advanced stages of MASH. As Wegovy and similar drugs progress, their ultimate value may lie in complementary roles alongside other #treatments, reshaping MASH care without single-handedly transforming it.

Per Morgan Stanley’s metrics, #JJ is in excellent shape as just 33% of its revenue is exposed to patent expirations through 2030, compared to an industry average of 38%. Other #biopharma companies in good positions regarding their #patentcliffs are #Vertex (6%), #Gilead (24%), #AbbVie (29%), #EliLilly (31%) and #Pfizer (33%).

AbbVie is doubling down on its strategy to maintain leadership in immunology and inflammation (I&I) with the nimble acquisition of Nimble Therapeutics for $200 million upfront. This move brings Nimble’s preclinical pipeline of oral peptide candidates into AbbVie’s growing I&I portfolio, as the company continues to invest in next-generation therapies beyond its blockbusters Humira, Skyrizi, and Rinvoq. Founded in 2019 as a spinout from Roche, Nimble has developed a chemical synthesis platform that supports its experimental oral treatments, including IL-23R inhibitor for psoriasis, C5 inhibitor for generalized myasthenia gravis, and TL1A inhibitor for inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). This deal marks AbbVie’s third autoimmune-focused acquisition this year, following Celsius Therapeutics ($250M) and Landos Biopharma ($137.5M). It also reflects a broader industry trend of large pharmas acquiring smaller, private biotechs with early-stage assets. The focus on oral therapies highlights an important shift in the autoimmune space, as patients and providers increasingly seek alternatives to injectable biologics. With fierce competition in I&I, AbbVie is proactively securing the next generation of therapies that could enhance its long-term market position. Hot Take for 2025: The End of Traditional Pharma BD 2025 will mark the beginning of the end for traditional pharma business development - but not for the reasons most think. While platform licensing deals have historically disappointed, AI is finally changing this paradigm. Why is this time different? Previous platform deals failed due to: -Technical limitations (delivery challenges, limited scale) -Complex deal structures killing momentum -Misaligned incentives between parties -High costs without clear ROI paths But AI platforms are fundamentally changing the game through: -Dramatically lower costs per candidate -Rapid validation cycles -Cross-therapeutic area adaptability -Continuous learning improving value The evidence is mounting: -Insitro's successful Gilead/BMS partnerships -Recursion's pharma collaborations showing results -Insilico Medicine's clinical progress -Major AI investments by AZ, Novartis, GSK Looking ahead: Smart pharma companies will shift from "multiple shots on goal" to securing "better targeting systems" through AI platforms. We'll see more mega-deals focused on platform access rather than single assets. The industry's skepticism of platform deals is warranted given history. We are pleased to announce presentations of four of our clinical studies at the American Society of Clinical Oncology annual congress at Chicago. Our presentations this year include data of investigational drugs olverembatinib in patients with SDH deficient gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST), an indication that currently has no effective treatment; lisaftoclax in patients with acute myeloid leukemia (AML) and in patients with Waldenstrom macroglobulinemia (WM), as well as those of APG-2449 in patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). We remain committed to bring novel and effective therapies for patients with cancers.
