When GM acquired Cruise, it was a scrappy team still in the process of finding product-market fit. But GM had a different vision: rapid scaling. That’s why billions were invested and bold predictions about thousands of robotaxis by 2020 were made back in 2016-2017. The problem? True innovation requires mastering the basics before scaling. Skipping this step turns a promising venture into a financial drain on the parent company, especially in cyclical industries like automotive manufacturing. And in tougher economic climates, such missteps become even harder to sustain. Today the Flow.com team heralded in a new chapter in their bid to bring web3 to the masses. The release of Cadence 1.0 is probably the biggest update to the flow network since its inception. There are many articles on the benefits so I won't go into that, but suffice it to say that this stable release provides the much needed certainty for developers, projects and creators that has been so desperately needed. This update also brings EVM to flow. Again lots of information on this, but I am extremely excited by this prospect. It finally means that we can bring all of the power that Flow has to offer and match that with the Excellent progress made in the EVM network, without feeling like they are competing technologies. A true Symbiosis, with software working in a complimentary way to produce better, stronger, more contentful experiences. Being so closely involved with the Flow team, I have been privileged to have some insight into the hard work, dedication and passion shown by everyone working so hard to create software and infrastructure that is accessible, innovative and usable for everyone. It's infectious and inspiring. Roham Gharegozlou should be very proud of the excellent team he has built. Pride is something I am not short of currently. 21 days ago, my team took on a challenge. To build a kick ass block explorer, worthy of such a monumental update to the chain. I think many felt it wasn't possible, I myself was honestly unsure, however, my team do not comprehend can't do! It was this can do attitude and absolute grit and determination that meant we delivered! after many many late nights, very little sleep and a lot of "creative" discussion, I have the immense pride in presenting https://flowscan.io. While it is very much in a Beta phase, what the team have produced in the time available is nothing short of a miracle. The harsh reality of CA politics -- the state government works for Big Tech, not the citizens. Some good quotes here. Newsom's stated goal about workable "guardrails" is nonsensical as it's currently physically impossible. That's a bit like saying they are pursuing a way to apply DDT safely to agriculture.... no such method existed. Newsom and CA have zero cred on anything relating to responsible or safe AI. The question is whether that extends to Harris. I honestly don't know, but her history in defending SV and conflicting relationships that include her brother-in-law suggests that it would be difficult for her to regulate Big Tech objectively. Trump is also a wild card. He's so unpredictable that one day he might attempt to order Zuch arrested and the next brag about the power of American Big Tech. The next four years will be interesting. I have much more confidence in SCOTUS.

Data Rant #1 – Numbers without context. "It was a 4-point game, when…" Yes, that tells you nothing without context. The context? There were 8 minutes left in the NRL grand final between the Broncos and the Panthers. The Broncos were still up, but an errant kick had just led to a penalty in favour of the Panthers. My family is still too sore to speak of this loss over a year later.   Numbers without context are one of my pet peeves. For example, 4 points is an enormous lead had it been soccer – but this was Rugby League. And had it been 8 minutes into the game, versus 8 minutes remaining, it would barely be called a lead. Context changes everything. Please don’t ire the data gods by presenting numbers without context.   So how do you provide context? The two most relevant complements to a number are the target and a past value. Sometimes you can omit one of these if the other can be implied, but there is no harm in providing both. For example, if machine utilisation is 79% the context might be that this is up from 75% last month but still short of the 85% target. See how much richer the understanding is with the additional two context numbers?   An alternative is to include a chart with a target line. Charts are great because now you can see a 𝘵𝘳𝘦𝘯𝘥, however, be careful not to introduce too much visual noise. There is an art to good dashboard design. I'll pick this up another time.   'nough said. Please include context! And feel free to contribute your rants. I've plenty to come.   Note: this was the 𝘉𝘳𝘪𝘴𝘣𝘢𝘯𝘦 Broncos and the 𝘗𝘦𝘯𝘳𝘪𝘵𝘩 Panthers. Sensibly the Denver Broncos and the Carolina Panthers don't play NRL. For the Australians, wondering why I'm still talking about last season, it's because this season has been wiped from my memory.

A lot of developers opt for total rebuilds without ever giving persistence a chance. While completely tearing down a project might be the right move sometimes… I’ve found that there is nearly always value in the existing system. You just have to really 𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄 that system to effectively further your business goals… And adapt as needed.

Have you ever thought about how compliance laws are a lot like design systems? I recently spoke with Joe Toscano, founder of DataGrade, and he made a fascinating comparison. Joe explained how Brad Frost's atomic design methodology took an engineering approach to design: → Creating standardized elements → Templatizing them → Scaling them across a system This led to the rise of human interface guidelines (HIGs) from tech giants like Google, Apple, and IBM. But here's where it gets really interesting: Joe argued that privacy laws and regulations are like the ultimate HIG for product design. Just like how HIGs provide rules and constraints for design systems... Compliance laws set guardrails for what we can and can't do with user data. If we design something that isn't compliant, it doesn't matter how sleek the UI is. Legal requirements become the top-level framework we have to design within. That's what got Joe into studying laws - to understand this new "design system" for building products. So next time you're cursing a lengthy legal doc or trying to make sense of GDPR...
