I use Tableau most days. I haven't used an LOD in four months. I learned about a year ago that a lot of times, LOD's are basically a fixed attribute of the data that should probably exist in SQL instead of slowing down the viz layer in Tableau. At the time, my SQL skills were not very strong. In the past year, each time I've tested an LOD, once I got it working, I translated it into SQL to put it into the table that I connect Tableau to as a new column. (ALWAYS test your LOD's in a CROSSTAB!!!!!!) Connecting a dashboard to a report table(s) with the data you need > stacking one LOD on top of another in a production dashboard. I might still pull out LOD's if I was doing a personal exploration, and maybe there are some use cases for them in Prod dashboards (meant to be consumed) but.... Dastabase computed columns in a spot everyone else can use them too > in workbook LOD's whenever possible.

Sometimes the biggest wins with Data are powered in the most unexciting ways: - reconciling two data sources - a lot of CASE WHEN in a SQL statement - a few bar charts & line charts on a new dashboard - asking "why?" several times until you reach the bottom So remember, you don't have to be using ML or AI or the latest trendy tool to make an impact. A good spreadsheet, a simple query and some common-sense visualizations will often get you where you need to go. #data #analytics #simplicity

The biggest challenge I'm currently facing with one of Tableau projects is assigning containers while planning to display the visualizations using Dynamic Zone Visibility. Since each of these visualization contains links to other web objects in the dashboard, I'm dealing with numerous calculated fields, parameters, and a lot of trial and error. I hope to finish the first draft by this weekend. If you have any tips for managing containers within containers, please share them. #Tableau , #DZV

Hello from San Diego! Are you ready for the Tableau Conference? Here's 5 networking tips for my fellow introverts: 1. Have your 'elevator pitch' ready + a few relevant fun facts. When you suddenly find yourself trying to sound like you know how to speak when you're in a group of new people, you will be glad to have these practiced ahead of time. 2. My favorite part of conferences is the networking. Look for meetups that interest you, and make it a goal to meet new people, even if you feel awkward. 3. Most tech people are introverted. If you're feeling awkward trying to meet new people at a meetup, chances are 80% of the people around you are too. Everyone will thank you for breaking the ice, even if it feels awkward or clunky to you. Be brave! 4. Remember who you meet. Scan each other's QR codes on your badges to swap LinkedIn's, and make sure to say their name once or twice. It will help you remember them. 5. After you meet someone you like, put a note down in your phone of their name and something interesting you discussed. Then, in the next few days, send them a message on whatever form of contact info they gave you so you can stay in touch. Looking forward to meeting some of you there! I've been interested in Greg Deckler's #nocalculate approach to DAX, but I haven't come upon guidance about how to apply it when data is in multiple tables as it is in a star schema (though I'm now exploring the #25daysofdaxfridays challenge that provides examples). Having made my first attempt this week, I'd appreciate feedback. My data model consists of a fact table named 'TASKS' for Help Desk tickets. Since it's a factless fact table, I added a QTY column that has the value 1 for every row. So once the TASK table is filtered, one can sum the QTY column to find out how many tickets meet the criteria. A second table is Short Descr. It has a logical calculated column named 'Suites?' whose values are Boolean true or false, and it has another extracted column that lists how many cubicles require an action in that task. A third table reports on the State of the ticket, whether it's Open or Closed. I want to create a DAX measure in the #nocalculate style that counts the number of trouble tickets in which 'Suites?' is true and reports on the number of cubicles that have the State "Open." Come solve Analyst Builder's problem of the week with me! I'm doing it live and yes- I make a few silly errors because I am rushing :) "Find the customer who has watched the greatest number of movies. Return the Customer Name." You've heard me talk about it before, but Analyst Builder is a data analytics platform where you can learn Excel, SQL, Tableau, Python, get a data analyst roadmap.... oh yeah and practice interview questions!!! The technical interview is I think the scariest hurdle along the way to getting a data job, and so having practice questions (and a course to go along with them) to help you prepare is pretty awesome if you ask me. Can you come up with the right answer without watching me solve it? And can you catch my silly errors as I am solving before I catch them? ;)

I found this technique very useful for handling long texts like customer names, product names, or job titles without using Regex. It's helpful when you need to fit text inside chart, for example bar chart, without it overflowing. This method solves that issue effectively. Essentially, you have to use CHAR(10) to break the line, where CHAR() function returns a character from ASCII code, and 10 is line breaker/liner feeder/newline character.
