"New developer Old Glory Studios today announced the launch of its new crowdfunding campaign, in partnership with Folla Capital, LLC. The studio, which is founded by military veterans who previously worked on titles such as Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon and The Division, plans to develop military-based titles, with its launch game being team-based PvP shooter Victory’s Grave: Outflank. To build this title, Old Glory has launched a “Regulation Crowdfunding” campaign, which will give investors equity in the studio."

I just delved into the news about Embracer splitting, and noticed that their indie and A/AA business unit, Coffee Stain & Friends, was their most profitable, with an adj. EBIT of SEK 2.8B and an operating margin of 25.69% in 2023. In contrast, their AAA business, Middle-earth Enterprises & Friends, despite having all the fancy IPs, like The Lord of the Rings and Tomb Raider, only had an adj. EBIT of SEK 2.0B and an operating margin of 14.18%, while employing 44.4% more people than the indie and A/AA unit. During 2021-2022, it was not uncommon for brand new AAA IPs to raise tens of millions in seed funding. Tourist investors got all excited about the potential of backing the next LoL or PUBG. Many are just starting to realize: 𝐀𝐀𝐀 𝐠𝐚𝐦𝐞 𝐝𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐥𝐨𝐩𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐢𝐬 𝐚 𝐡𝐢𝐠𝐡 𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐤, 𝐥𝐨𝐰 𝐦𝐚𝐫𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐬 𝐠𝐚𝐦𝐞 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐨𝐧𝐥𝐲 𝐟𝐞𝐰 𝐰𝐢𝐧𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐬, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐚 𝐬𝐞𝐚 𝐨𝐟 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐞𝐭𝐢𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐬. #gamedevelopment #gameinvestment #videogames ---------------------------------------------- Thanks Jessica Tams for pointing out these are just Embracer's pro forma financials. "Pro-forma earnings are not computed using standard GAAP and usually leave out one-time expenses that are not part of normal company operations, such as restructuring costs following a merger. Essentially, a pro-forma financial statement can exclude anything a company believes obscures the accuracy of its financial outlook and can be a useful piece of information to help assess a company's future prospects." -- Investopedia

Dude Perfect raised $100M for global biz expansion. The deal is getting lots of buzz, but our team’s math signals challenges ahead. I really like and support the trend of increased investment into YouTubers and digital-native media brands. But as I wrote about in my 2024 State of Creator x Media capital markets reports (will link them below), investment must match market and opportunity size. To ensure good ROI, and to set good precedent for future investment into our space. The DP bet is exciting, but could be overly optimistic based on our prelim math. My colleague Michael Booth's post breaks the math down (link below). More analysis to come in my Friday newsletter. —- I’m the founder of RockWater Industries. Is Paramount's Tech Transformation Just a Pipe Dream? In the ever-evolving landscape of media, David Ellison’s announcement about transforming Paramount into a tech powerhouse stirred quite the conversation. Including by me: https://lnkd.in/eBsi2xbi But as we dive deeper, several challenges emerge, casting shadows of doubt over this ambitious pivot. #1. Financial Feasibility With Paramount grappling with substantial debt and pressing financial obligations, notably hefty NFL payments, the costs of attracting top tech talent become a significant concern. Can Paramount realistically afford this tech overhaul amidst economic uncertainties and a struggling stock? The talent war isn't won on ambitions alone, especially when competitors like Google offer more stable havens. #2. Creator vs. Coder Paramount’s tech ambition, while necessary, seems at odds with maintaining the creator-friendly environment Ellison dually promised. In an era when interest rates have climbed, balancing tech innovation with creative freedom is a tightrope walk. Remember, even Netflix, once a haven for creators with its blank checks during #ZIRP, is tightening its purse strings. How can Paramount navigate these waters without the cushion of a tech giant's capital or rising stock prices? 3. Building vs. Buying Tech Infrastructure David Ellison’s plan for Paramount involves a substantial commitment to developing in-house tech capabilities, focusing on cloud services, AI, user interfaces, recommendation algorithms, and ad-serving technologies. This approach aims to differentiate Paramount from competitors and enhance user experience. However, the tech sector’s history suggests leveraging established third-party platforms could be more cost-effective and reliable. Giants like Disney have successfully integrated platforms like BamTech, while HBO initially utilized external technology before transitioning. AMC Networks similarly relies on Brightcove for streaming technologies. The pivotal question for Ellison is whether the potential benefits of custom-built solutions justify the investment and risk, especially when patching together proven third-party solutions might yield quicker and more economical results. #InEssence... These challenges are monumental, yet not insurmountable. As we watch Paramount’s narrative unfold, one thing is clear: transitioning into a tech entity is more than just a strategic pivot—it’s a gamble on the future of entertainment itself. Thoughts? #Paramount #StreamingWars #MediaTech

It’s fantastic to see another major player in the gaming industry, Atari’s Infogrames, placing game preservation at the heart of its business strategy. As highlighted in a recent article, Atari CEO Wade Rosen is committed to preserving and re-releasing classic games in ways that respect their original integrity while making them accessible to modern audiences. This move further underscores the increasing importance of game preservation, not just as a cultural necessity but as a viable business opportunity. Recent reports, such as the 2023 Video Games Europe Key Facts and Newzoo’s insights, have highlighted the growing significance of preserving our gaming heritage. Initiatives like #StopKillingVideoGames, which has gained record popularity, are part of a broader trend recognizing the need to safeguard video games' cultural and historical value. With GOG already making game preservation a core aspect of its business model, it’s encouraging to see this movement gain more momentum across the industry. As more companies and initiatives join forces, the preservation of gaming history is becoming an essential focus that will benefit both the industry and players alike. https://lnkd.in/d_Mz8NM5

Interesting article about a veteran panel's thoughts on the state of gaming. My quick thoughts for whatever they're worth: 1. There are still many more layoffs coming. The underlying fundamentals of many developers, publishers, and platform / tech companies are questionable and not looking to improve. Talent costs are too high in developed countries and it takes too long to make AA / AAA games. The modus operandi of expensive video game development is dying outside of the tentpole big IPs. 2. Indie game developers with ability to bootstrap to an identifiable, quality MVP will be the harbingers of many of the new innovations in gaming. I would argue that the current mass migration into Indie is good for gamers and the industry. But the competition will be ferocious for resources. 3. Discoverability is a big problem, and novel publishing / marketing techniques for discoverability could turn into actual companies that shake up the industry. Some folks will make a killing if they address this issue. This would be an actually useful application of AI / ML. 4. From everyone I've spoken with since GDC who actually knows what they're talking about, the game industry financing situation will improve later this year / through next year. A lot of content calendars for 2025-7 have been decimated by project cancellations, and those same publishers / platforms need content. Interest rates will likely go down / clarity in future of US / EU markets will likely improve over the next year. Also, a lot of money is sitting waiting to be deployed. But there still remains a massive hangover from the absolute nonsense of 2020-2022. https://lnkd.in/gGA272ZR #gameindustry #gaming #startuplife #investment #indie #gamedev

Some secrets are being spilled at HGC Berlin 2024, and you don't want to miss it! First up, on October 25th at 12:00, I'll be giving a talk called "How to F*ck Up Your Console Launch, Even Before You Start Porting." If you want to hear about the biggest mistakes studios make with console launches (and how to dodge them), this one's for you. Then, later at 3:00 PM, I'm diving into "Recruit & Retain: Strategies for Gaming Talent Management." Did you know Dreamloop has an 84% boomerang rate? Yes, we've had only 6 people resign in 9 years. I'll be sharing how we built a culture where people actually want to stay—no gimmicks, just real strategies that work.

Calling Investors: Invest in the original Xbox “Duke” controller… I am working with a new gaming peripherals company set to take the world by storm and they are looking for investors to join the team. Founded by Duke Schnepf, son of gaming visionary, and Xbox founder, Brett Schnepf, backed by multiple founding fathers of the Xbox, this company is pushing the boundaries of the gaming peripherals sector. Their journey began with Brett Schnepf, a luminary whose contributions to gaming history are etched in stone. As a founding member of the Xbox console team, Brett's design prowess shaped modern gaming, with iconic creations like the Sidewinder PC controller and the legendary Duke controller. Today, Duke Schnepf carries forth his father's legacy. Upside and a half! In late 2024, a major streaming platform will release a series chronicling the founding of a pioneering gaming console (can you guess which one) and the launch of Duke's ground-breaking products, offering an intimate look at the visionary minds behind this revolution. Looking for investments of $10K, $20K, $50K, $100K, $250, $500K, and $1M. Higher investments with equity shares are available for discussion. We foresee full returns and profits delivered within 1 year. If you're interested in being part of this exciting journey, please get in touch to set up a call ASAP. #Gaming #InvestmentOpportunity #Innovation #GamingPeripherals #TechInvestments #gamedev #investors #angelinvestors #gameinvestor #PEinvestment #AngelInvestment

Here's a detailed breakdown, starting with current lifetime sales thresholds: - Manor Lords has sold over 2.5 million copies. - Against the Storm has sold over 1.2 million copies. - Workers & Resources: Soviet Republic has sold over 600,000 copies. - Empires of the Undergrowth has sold over 450,000 copies. - Old World has sold over 350,000 copies. - Norland has sold over 300,000 copies. - Terra Invicta has sold over 250,000 copies. - Cataclismo, NEBULOUS: Fleet Command, and Clanfolk have all sold over 150,000 copies each. - Xenonauts 2 has sold over 100,000 copies. For upcoming games and Steam wishlist thresholds: - Falling Frontier has over 600,000 wishlists. - Nova Roma has over 350,000 wishlists. - Super Fantasy Kingdom and MENACE each have over 250,000 wishlists. - Espiocracy, Blacksmith Master, and Fata Deum all have over 200,000 wishlists. - Fragile Existence has over 150,000 wishlists. - Beyond These Stars, Mars Tactics, Capital Command, and Whiskerwood all have over 100,000 wishlists. And I'm very much looking forward to all the new releases we've got coming next year!

Today I want to tell a story. I've been holding onto it for a specific circumstance, but in case that doesn't happen, forgive the rough edges. For the longest time, I wanted to be a games journalist. I've known how to play games and deconstruct their mechanics ever since I spent many school summer holidays playing the same Playstation games over and over. I would be the kid that would read games magazines, mostly for the cheat codes, on occasion spotting an article about the next Pokemon game that I just had to tell my friends about. I was never taught or told that being a "critic" or "journalist" was a career, let alone in games. Media Studies wasn't even a subject my high school taught until sixth form options, so I'd have to get by with learning how to deconstruct the written word - often Shakespeare or "Of Mice and Men" - in English Literature class. Jump forward to 2014/5. I was in University, with the freedom to learn about "the media" and online video (YouTube) as I had experienced through college. Despite being on a TV Production course, and though we students all knew the influence social media was going to play in our careers, games were still part of my plan. Through friendships and unsuccessfully trying out for the Student Union's monthly news series as a "games correspondent", I was able to work on a project with a criminology student who also liked games. He ran his own YouTube channel, as I had done under many brands and guises over the years, but he was more consistent. I came on board as his camera operator during EGX Rezzed and we made a few interview videos together. One of which I want to bring to the attention of Hyper Luminal Games. Yes, happy birthday Hyper Luminal! 🎉 We've both changed since this video about Big Crown Showdown! Congrats on releasing Pine Hearts - a wholesome cosy game that is a love letter to the simple life in Scotland. I can't wait to play the full thing - Melissa kindly showed me it at WASD this year, it really was charming! Things have a weird way of coming back around. I don't believe in karma, but I've been watching the work of many studios that I admire and wondered where I fit, thinking maybe there are some answers in my previous work. So, this little story is tale of never forgetting your roots, and celebrating them where you can! Also, if I may be a bit cheeky: If you ever have the availability Hyper Luminal, I would love the chance to join your team! I can assure you my on-screen presence and ability to manage events & communities is far better than what I could manage 10 years ago. I'm happy to work on a relocation plan up to Dundee, be that to work for the core studio under Melissa's expert & bubbly guidance, or having the opportunity to scout for Little Nook's next great wholesome story to share. Here's to both our next chapters! Video:

What's the current state of M&A in gaming? 🔽 In this month's Expert Insights series, I'm sharing some observations on the shifts we've all seen recently in M&A, with some insights from M&A experts Ronen Gross, VP of Business Development Plarium, and Shum Singh, founder of Agnitio Capital! Last month's big news of Playtika acquiring SuperPlay was a huge acquisition for the industry, and reflects a lot of the current changes happening. These are my top three takeaways on the current state of gaming M&A: 1. Shift from venture capital investments to private equity 💲 While VC's used to dominate early-stage investments in especially mobile gaming, PE firms are becoming more interested in these maturing gaming companies that generate steady revenue. Financial advisors are also becoming a crucial player in helping gaming companies transition from startups to profitable businesses by building connections that bridge the gap between VC and PE. 2. Platform shift from mobile to PC 💻 With rising UA costs and competition, the attention is turning towards PC gaming. PC enables gaming studios to break through to players without having a huge marketing budget, using platforms like Steam that provide great visibility at a low cost. My advice is to focus on both mobile and PC, with the help of the right partner. This partner can help you diversify across platforms and should offer expertise in things like game economics, monetization strategies, and scaling operations. 3. Consolidation slow down 📊 In recent years, major players like Stillfront, Embracer Group, and Zynga have continued to do large-scale acquisitions, with Scopely's $4.9 billion deal being a standout. However, this wave of activity has slowed, particularly as the pressure for hyper-casual games has faded. But as Ronen Gross said, “Overall, we hope that all the new companies that were established in the past few years will take a bigger cut of the market, so we see more significant growth that will result in many more M&A deals. A win-win situation for the entire market.” What do you think about the current situation? Let’s talk about where gaming M&A is headed and what your predictions are! 👾Read the full article here: https://lnkd.in/d2s6DPGU #GamingIndustry #MandA #PrivateEquity #GameDevelopment #ExpertInsights
