Major outdoor brands are scaling back sales to "Daigou," or Chinese resellers, in department stores due to concerns over pricing control and brand integrity. Daigou buy popular products in bulk at discounted prices in Korea, then resell them at marked-up rates in China, potentially undermining the brands' premium positioning. In July, Kolon Sport issued a notice to department stores nationwide, requesting adjustments to discounts and sales aimed at Daigou. Similarly, The North Face communicated a policy to limit Daigou sales, driven by requests from its U.S. headquarters. A department store representative noted, “Youngone Trading, which holds the domestic rights for The North Face, was asked to discourage Daigou sales.” As a result of these measures, sales to Daigou—often amounting to tens of millions of won at a time—have diminished, impacting the brands' performance in department stores. Reports indicate that sales from these outlets have dropped by approximately 10% compared to the same period last year. The decision to limit sales to these high-volume buyers reflects a strategic move to protect brand value, as outdoor brands typically adopt premium pricing strategies in China. With domestic prices often lower, Daigou sometimes demand additional discounts for bulk purchases, which can further disrupt local pricing. A fashion industry insider commented, “Kolon Sport has partnered with a Chinese company, while The North Face has established direct operations in China. Concerns over Daigou's secondary sales weakening pricing control and long-term brand value are significant.” Youngone Trading clarified that while they are limiting the quantity purchased per individual for certain products, this policy is not aimed at specific nationalities.
