The cost basis for electric heat in most markets per MMBTU has always been higher for electric heat vs fossil fuel even considering the higher thermal efficiency of heat pumps vs boilers. Absolutely, shared storage and chemical manufacturing with green hydrogen is the pathway in my opinion. The DOE has been outlining a roadmap for Green Hydrogen Hubs. CO2 with Hydrogen can totally replace petrochemical based chemical manufacturing. It makes sense to also locate green steel manufacturing and other advanced manufacturing centers, as shown in your infographic. Large storage of CO2 can double as energy storage similar to compressed air storage such that it generates electricity as it supplies industrial processes. Both the compression and distribution of the CO2 can help balance the grid if it is managed by AI using demand response. I would love to see agrivoltaics layered in to these systems such that biomass for biochar is produced on site as well. Biochar can then be value added and ultimately a whole new molecular economy will unlock limitless growth with advanced circular economies using these methods. Carbon Neutral Rocket fuel is likely to be the catalyst to end fracking by giving an alternative source of methane that will become competitive once energy costs continue to fall with smart grids and extremely cheap surplus DC from photovoltaics.
