Trench safety is important for contractors. Easy to do, easy to train but costly to NOT do: "OSHA's investigation resulted in severe penalties for Hurtado Construction Co., including one willful citation for permitting employees to work in hazardous trenches without proper protection, and five serious citations. These serious citations pertained to the absence of first aid provision, lack of emergency escape ladder, disregard for saturated excavation conditions, and improper use of reinforced concrete boxes for protection during excavation work. Random thought: if the construction industry is serious about reducing fall injuries/ fatalities.. they may want to start leaning into training their foremen/ supervisors in competent person training in fall prevention. So many instances where a supervisor sets up an inadequate fall prevention plan etc due to not having the extra training/education. Safety Versus Profitability What is the first thing that comes to mind when the word “safety” is mentioned in a meeting or on a jobsite? Perhaps you imagine superintendents reminding employees to wear their personal protective equipment (PPE). You may picture a checklist of all the necessary precautions to be completed prior to starting a job. It is often perceived that safety slows an operation down, when safety should be associated with profitability. In an Engineering News-Record survey, 63 percent of contractors believe safety has no effect on profitability. The above is however untrue as a poor safety record will indeed negatively affect your company's bottom line. Why is static pressure so important? Can you cite some of the problems when static pressure is out of whack? How will this affect the overall performance of a home? How about the safety and health of other people living inside? Will this affect the durability of subsystem’s? How do we get static pressure right? Static pressure is like taking someone’s blood pressure. It helps us to understand what is going on inside the system. When the static is too low or too high, we will have issues. A properly designed system starting with manual J and proceeding to manual S and then to manual D., we have a fighting chance of getting this system to work properly. Sometimes it can get really complex when a duct system has air leaks, and the building envelope has air leaks. When you start to consider all the variables and all the possible outcomes, it is a large number. But a good diagnostician will know how to zero in on the issues. There ya have it folks... It's time to lean into some better safety practices. Falls from platforms are a leading cause of fatal work-related incidents. To prevent falls, employers and workers can: Plan: Conduct a risk assessment, select the right machine, and ensure operators are trained. Use fall protection: Use personal fall protection equipment (PFPE) and attach lanyards to the correct anchor point. Fall protection systems can prevent workers from hitting the ground or falling more than a few feet. Stay inside the platform: Stay inside the platform and avoid overreaching, stepping on guardrails, or climbing on them. Use guardrails: Guardrails are the primary method of fall prevention. Add a toe board: A toe board can prevent objects from falling onto workers below. OSHA requires fall protection at certain elevations and when working over dangerous equipment

Site engineers must always assess the risk of intended excavations before hand by first analyzing the soil profile and to know whether the trench walls with its depth would prevent itself from subsidence. In most cases it would not. Then the placement of trench protection boxes are highly recommeneded before allowing any kind of human presence to enter the trench hole. Think ahead, so you can keep it safe!
