Caltech's recent milestone is nothing short of groundbreaking. For the first time, the institution is set to enroll a majority of women, marking a significant shift in its historically male-dominated culture. This pivotal moment represents more than just a statistical change; it signifies a broader commitment to inclusivity and diversity in STEM fields. By creating an environment where women are the majority, Caltech is leading the charge in breaking down barriers and setting a new standard for gender equity in higher education. It's a reminder that progress in representation within academia and STEM is not just about numbers but about creating opportunities and fostering innovation. At Base 11, we are pleased to have concluded another successful Summer Fellowship cycle at Caltech where we have partnered to create more equity in STEM. #WomenInSTEM #STEM #WomensEmpowerment

Over the past 5 months, a dedicated group has convened to discuss how the state (and the broader ecosystem) can better support and connect Oregon's incredible food & beverage community -- a community that touches every region and part of the state. It's been an honor to serve as co-chair of the Growth & Innovation committee with Nikki Guerrero. We have helped to oversee committees focused around Innovation, Trade, Capital and Copacking/Distribution. These are all big issues to tackle, and while we most likely won't be able to address all of them in deep ways, our hope is that this work creates programs that can have immediate impact, but just important lays the foundation upon which to help create the framework to help more Oregon based F&B companies become long term sustainable/profitable companies. Big thanks to the folks who have dedicated their time to working on all these issues - Hannah Kathryn Kullberg, Kristen Penner, Sheri Cole, Thomas Angel, Paul Evers, Joth Ricci, Sam Tannahill, Amori Rix, Chris Joseph, Lois Cho, Chris Nemlowill, Erik Andersson, Erick Garman, Jess Paulson, Jaime Lynne Tulley, John Boyle, Katherine Lam, MBA, Martin McClanan, Nathan Kadish, Chris Barhyte, Lindsey Morse. And a note of thanks to Andrew Desmond from the Oregon Business Council (OBC) for helping to steer all of us towards some actionable outcomes. This work is critically important to Oregon, and I'm humbled to be able to play a part in helping to create some impactful and meaningful initiatives. https://lnkd.in/gTj_HJfS

🎭 Kathryn Palmer reports: A number of selective graduate programs in the fine arts—including some at the University of Southern California, Carnegie Mellon University and The Juilliard School—have recently dropped their hefty sticker prices and gone #tuition-free in the name of expanding access to arts education. “The impact of these gifts on our students’ futures—and the field—cannot be overstated,” Evan Yionoulis, dean and director of Juilliard’s drama division, said last September when the institution announced it would no longer charge tuition to students seeking a master of fine arts degree in drama beginning this fall. And when #USC announced last month that its acting and dramatic writing graduate programs would stop charging tuition next year, Emily Roxworthy, dean of USC’s School of Dramatic Arts, characterized it as “an important investment in the future of storytelling and the performing arts.” Applications to Yale’s drama M.F.A. program increased by 29 percent after the program went tuition-free in 2021. And applications from Black and Indigenous would-be students and other people of color increased by 45 percent, said James Bundy, dean of Yale’s drama school, adding that the program’s student body reflects the nation’s demographic #diversity. For Eliza Kuperschmid, who is entering her last year of the dramatic writing M.F.A. program at USC, the announcement last month that the program was going fully tuition-free came as a huge relief: “Tuition being lifted is allowing me to dream more broadly about my options.” Robert Townsend, director of humanities, arts and culture programs at the American Academy of Arts & Sciences, said, “Being more explicit about the fact that these programs are free is really important in helping to diversify, not just the race and ethnicity demographics, but also the kinds of class demographics of the people trying to come into these programs. To the extent that a program like USC’s is lowering at least one of those hurdles, that could make an important difference.” #PerformingArts #ArtsIndustry #GradStudents #FinancialAid #Scholarships #DiversityInEducation #DEI #AffordableEducation #MFAstudents #Yale #Julliard #ArtStudents #DramaStudents #TheaterStudies #playwriting #screenwriting

ILUMIN Education
Are the test-optional tides turning? For some top schools, the answer is yes. The role and nature of standardized testing in the college admissions landscape have certainly moved in many directions over recent years—the shift to digital testing for both the ACT and the SAT, changes in the many schools’ testing policies (including the University of California system’s) in response to limited access to testing centers over COVID-19, and the debate on whether or not the increasing test-optional policies were truly test-optional, just to name a few. Now, many schools, including Brown and Harvard, are bringing back SAT and ACT score requirements. The transition from high school into postsecondary education and a career has become particularly challenging given today’s complex, fast-moving, and highly technological economy. To combat this problem, one approach widely adopted is the career academy model, which combines a college-preparatory and career and technical curriculum with a career theme and is often structured as a small learning community within a larger high school. A landmark MDRC randomized controlled trial of career academies, starting in the mid-1990s, found sustained earnings gains for academy participants in the eight years after expected high school completion. Shifts in the labor market, reforms to secondary education, and a growth in both high school graduation and postsecondary enrollment rates across the United States prompt new questions about how participating in career academies may affect current students’ academic and labor outcomes. To answer these questions, MDRC is conducting a long-term randomized controlled trial of California Partnership Academies (CPAs), which are partially state-funded career academies within high schools across California. This report explores the impacts of CPAs on students’ high school graduation and college readiness at the end of high school as well as their college enrollment during the first year after graduation.

Students Paid Thousands for a Caltech Boot Camp. Except that Caltech Didn’t Teach It ! Key takeaways from this NYT article: *Hundreds of universities have lent their names to online programs, plugging budgets but alienating students who feel misled. *Students described calls that dangled time-conditioned discounts with a sense of pushiness and urgency. *The sooner they enrolled, they were told, the sooner they would be on their way to better lives. *These company use high-pressure sales tactics. This week on Conscious Pathways I'm joined by Dr. Denise Kennedy, PhD, Professor and Department Chair of Early Childhood Studies at California State Polytechnic University, Pomona. In this conversation, Dr. Kennedy highlights the critical importance of play-based inquiry in early childhood education. She emphasizes how traditional education systems often focus on teaching to the test, which limits children's ability to problem-solve and think critically. Dr. Kennedy illustrates this with a powerful example: if we hand a child a toy and tell them exactly how to use it, they’ll follow instructions and move on. However, if we give them the toy with open-ended curiosity, they’ll explore and discover far more, enhancing their learning experience through play and inquiry-based learning. 🎧 Listen now: https://lnkd.in/gqav94yW b677a0d6-4c19-45bb-9c02-8e38fe5bde69/ep/5e029632-26e8-491e-8a77-214ca5cc98ac Watch here: https://lnkd.in/gb-yxSQY Let's discuss! A new report from the College Futures Foundation emphasizes the importance of transparency in higher education, especially when it comes to the return on investment (ROI) for students. It reveals that while the majority of California college programs offer a positive ROI, about 12%—primarily in for-profit institutions—do not. These programs often leave graduates earning less than peers without a degree. In contrast, programs at California State University and the University of California consistently show strong returns, with most graduates recouping their costs within five years. The report encourages families to evaluate colleges based on economic mobility rather than acceptance rates, addressing rising skepticism about the value of a college degree

"The leadership alliance, composed of some of Orange County’s best-known entrepreneurs and executives, said the increased demand for such talent is outpacing OC’s supply. The report said the need for AI experts in Orange County is putting pressure on businesses and universities to keep up the pace." - KEVIN COSTELLOE/Orange County Business Journal HIGHER ED: This article enforces what I've been (rather silently) projecting. I started building websites in 1993 when most didn't care much about this new technology called the World Wide Web; I taught myself how to code in a text editor. I see the same progression in AI-generated materials. This is why it is SO essential to incorporate AI teaching/learning into your curriculum, beginning with your course syllabus to explain your expectations, ethics, and how you plan to use (or teach) about ethical ways to use AI that will benefit students in their career. I would like to see as much training as possible in all areas, including training for current faculty and staff as well as student learning. I just completed several courses from the Adobe Education Institute as well as being part of a year-long, multi-college committee discussing Writing Across the Curriculum using AI-generating tools. What are your thoughts/suggestions? I'm tagging some of you! :) Roselyn Du, Doug Swanson, Ed.D APR, Jason M.
