To practice development delegation you need to start by clarifying expectations. At a minimum, you should clarify expectations around results. You can even clarify expected results on a spectrum. Consider situational leadership, is it important for you to: 1. Dictate the specific results? 2. Collaborate with your team members to align on the desired results? 3. Ask coaching questions to let your team member set the results using their own skills and experience? 4. Ask that your team members set the results and share them with you to align? Like anything in situational leadership, you will determine which options to choose above based on how skilled your team members are, how bought in they are, and how much time you have. If they have minimal to no experience you want to focus on option 1. If they are not bought-in focus on option 2. If they should be able to set the results on their own but need support pursue option 3. If they are ready to set them alone choose option 4. You can apply the same practice to determine the specific actions, behaviors, and processes of the work you are looking to delegate. Addressing Political Impacts on HR Policies For People Leaders facing these challenges, focusing on three essential actions is crucial: - Embrace proactive measures: Reinforce organizational values early to build trust and stability within the workforce. - Discourage disruptive behaviors: Educate employees on maintaining a respectful workplace culture to uphold productivity and morale. - Serve as mediators: Provide tools to resolve conflicts and promote understanding among employees with diverse perspectives. Workplace incivility already imposes significant costs on U.S. businesses, with an estimated daily loss of $2 billion in productivity and absenteeism, according to SHRM. By implementing a clear strategy and shared approach to managing political and values-related issues, HR leaders can help reduce these costs while safeguarding their organizational culture. When Jory Des Jardins and I were talking about generational divides in last week's Conversationality LinkedIn Live, Jory brought up a common concern about the impact #GenerativeAI may have on learning and improving one's #skills. It's the calculator problem...if kids can use calculators to perform equations, how will they learn the principles of doing so on their own? I guess we as a culture collectively got over that concern, since calculators are pretty well accepted in the classroom now. But writing, composing, designing, aren't these different? There's no one right answer when it comes to crafting words or images. It is what is both beautiful and frustrating about that kind of creation: You can always make it better. You can always fine tune. Some of us do our outlines and rough drafts in methodical order. Some of us spit it all out on the page and then whittle whittle whittle. (I'm the latter...I process a lot internally before it ever makes it on the page.) How will people coming into the workforce learn from their rough drafts and outlines if their first attempts are always cleaned up by AI? I think they'll learn when real live humans respond to their work and find it lacking, just like all of the rest of us did. My This Week-ish newsletter this week (check comments) talks about that journey. I already know what the "tell" often is when it comes to spotting AI-generated images, and I don't yet know what the tell is to spot AI-generated copy that hasn't had the human overlay applied. But I do not doubt we will figure it out. Does AI content you've seen have a tell?

This is a great article from the Admired Leadership blog. It stresses the importance of leaders mediating and asking for all perspectives on an issue instead of taking sides and assuming one side as truth. Those who do not seek to mediate are practicing management more than leadership.
