Founding a company is the best, dumbest decision of my career. This year I've gone on tour, given speeches, hosted signings and released the two most successful books since I started Carrara Media in 2019. The photo here is from a launch party I organized in Seattle. We sold out. It was lit. ✨ There have been extremely high highs. But this is not one of those feel-good, "It was all worth it" posts. Let’s cut the bullshit. We are changing the way people view car books. There is no doubt about that. No one is speaking to Millennial and Gen Z audiences the way we are. And the books we have planned are going to be bigger. I’m sure of it. And yet every day I think about quitting. I hate to admit that. But the truth is I felt it was my only option. I have had so much career turmoil that after 15 years as a journalist the only path I could envision was one I carved myself. My choices were either to take the hard path or walk away and lose a part of my identity. I chose the hard path, and the toll has been brutal. This is not glamorous – usually I’m panicking, and some days it's really hard to see light. It stops feeling character-building and starts feeling masochistic. It becomes unnecessary. It becomes foolish and dumb. I try hard to not feel foolish and dumb. I keep going because I love working with talented authors, whose stories deserve to be published. I love breaking down walls. I love reminding myself that I publish books – no small feat in itself! But I’ll let you in on the real secret. Most of all, I keep going because I believe there’s not a single person out there who can do what I do. Not in the same way. I believe the industry missed something in me, when they chewed me up and spit me out, that they couldn’t have found if they had a map. I believe that even if people wanted to copy us, they would never be able to. They could never do it like us. If they could, they already would have. Our new projects are so big, so full of potential, and so poised to completely disrupt everything we know about what this genre can accomplish. They are coming to life and they are going to explode. I know we are the right home for them. If we succeed, it won’t be because of me. It won’t be because I “bootstrapped” or “ten-X’d” or because I’m built different. I'm not some nerdy cartoon supervillain, battle-hardened to emerge as a change agent / thought leader. It will be because I listened to the right voices, and I believed in the right authors, and I found the right partners. I am looking for those people now. I rely on so many people, and I need so many more. I need help with every aspect of this business. If you think you can help, then I need your help. Please reach out. This is already the dumbest move of my career. I think that debate is probably settled by now. But it can still be the best move of my career. The jury’s still out on that one. If it’s gonna be your dumbest move, why not make it your best move, too? Wish me luck.

Most publisher do not and should not fill more than 75% of supply directly. Using the bottom 25% to leverage floors higher, increasing bids/ecpm. ROI allows publishers the opportunity to efficiently monetize 100% of their supply. Accomplishing this by selling unfilled outside of the direct adstack in a secondary auction or post-bid strategy. We will deliver real time market data on supply value, allowing publishers to understand supply value and flooring. Selling and optimizing your unsold is a simple and import part of a balanced programmatic strategy. Curious if anyone out there has a software tools subscription strategy? As a freelancer my biggest costs come from software subscriptions. With the implementation of AI, the subscription landscape has only become more complicated. My biggest gripe is subscription prices are rising each year across the board since 2022 when LLMs became mainstream. Zyn is the fastest growing CPG in 50 years. 22m pouches are consumed by Americans every day. What can we learn from the rise in mascuzynity? A little background. Zyn are sachets of wood pulp, nicotine and sweeteners that you tuck between your lip and gum. They are supposed to give you a buzz and make you more alert. In 2019, 50M tins were sold. In Q1 2024 alone, more than 136M tins were sold. Fuelled by "zinfluencers" like Tucker Carlson on social media, nicotine pouches (unlike tobacco and vapes) can be advertised and sold in different flavours. In 2022, Phillip Morris acquired Swedish Match, the parent company of Zyn. For many, the appeal is the nicotine. Peter Thiel often states that nicotine provides a 10 point IQ boost. Zyn reflects a shifting perception of male identity and reinforces certain attitudes. “A man with nicotine, protein, caffeine, and creatine coursing through his veins is an unstoppable force.” - Greg Price, a conservative political operator. We talked about this in the End of Men at Nearly Now 2024. Amongst a certain segment of disaffected men, the masculine archetype of strong and stoic has shifted to the hustle bro. Mascuzynity, a term coined by Anna North is about the constant self optimizing "hustle bro." This is the target zyn consumer. Consumers are buying and "popping a cool mint upper decky" because it is a totem of identity around a set of masculine traits that many find desireable. It is a connection to a lost sense of virility that the sensation the nicotine provides reinforces. While seeming abstract, this is an important shift in cultural values and mores to be aware of. Developments like Zyn demonstrate the importance of scanning for early signals of change. That something can get to the scale of Zyn and not be on our radars makes you wonder what else is out there that we are missing. Many of us are aware of the challenges arising from shifting concepts of masculinity and identity. The growth in products like Zyn highlights the scale of the issue.

Why the "Struggling" Companies Are Actually the Ones You Should Be Watching You’ve heard all about Unicorns—the high-flying, fast-growing companies that everyone wants to emulate. But what about the companies that don’t seem to be "doing it right"? The ones that seem barely held together, the ones with almost no budget, limited processes, and minimal fanfare? In World War II, researchers looked at planes that returned from battle and noticed bullet holes concentrated in certain parts of the aircraft. The assumption? Reinforce those parts. But then a smart statistician named Abraham Wald pointed out something crucial: the planes that didn’t return were the ones you needed to focus on, because they weren’t coming back with their own bullet holes in those areas. The survivors were telling a story of what NOT to fix. That’s how I see many of these so-called “struggling” companies. They might seem imperfect, but they’re surviving—sometimes thriving—in ways that fly under the radar. When the Unicorns inevitably burn out under their own weight or get broken up for parts, these "ugly ducklings" keep going year after year, quietly profiting. So, what are they getting right? Here’s what I’ve learned working at my fair share of companies that are still flying despite the odds: ➡️ No bloated software budgets: If it ain’t free or custom-built in-house, it’s not being bought. Their operating costs are razor-thin, so every dollar of revenue goes straight to profit. ➡️ Deep ecosystem integration: Whether it’s through Microsoft, Nvidia, or other major players, these companies tap into a rising tide. Even weak businesses gain momentum in the right ecosystem. ➡️ Key tenured employees: At least one senior leader in both operational/technical and customer-facing roles ensures company-wide mentorship, alignment, and efficiency. The business isn't running on fire drills; it's steady, consistent, and anchored by its people. ➡️ Few meetings, more doing: Staff are busy working, not talking about working. Minimal meetings and zero wasted time means the focus stays on the work that matters. ➡️ Extreme focus on core strengths: These companies aren’t distracted by “shiny object syndrome.” They develop what they’re good at and put zero energy into anything else. Essentials only. These companies may not follow traditional rules, and they might not look pretty on paper. But they keep flying. Their secret? Finished Week 1 building Nerd Crawler full-time, and I feel so lucky 🍀 Lucky to have grown up with parents who encouraged me to pursue my degree in English Lit. at University of California, Davis because I loved comics so much even if it meant my parents were super nervous about my post-grad job prospects. Lucky to have a partner in Alicia Prodromou who supports me in building a startup, listens to me talk non-stop about marketplace take, MRR, database queries, and is my copy/marketing/product advisor when I can't wrap my head around a problem or I get too long winded (see this very LinkedIn post as an example). Lucky to have an advisor like Frank Cho who believed in Nerd Crawler from Day 1, gave me grace when the site was buggy or his auctions broke, and who now uses his considerable reach to promote our marketplace. Lucky to have the support of our community of thousands who work with me every day to build a better social-marketplace for creators and fans to connect. --- If you're out there building and grinding to get your idea off the ground, know this: I started programming in 2015. Brands are wondering if they should turn off paid media + social media due to the California wildfire… but I actually don’t think you need to take that action, and I don’t think keeping social going makes your brand heartless. I’m a born & raised Californian who lived through far too many earthquakes & fires. This one is gonna be particularly devastating—I’ve had personal friends displaced & lose friends this time around, a first for me. But honestly, I believe we’re entering a time where there really are very few events that truly warrant a pause on social now. Historically, I’ve been on the hyper cautious side. I was a Strategy Director at R/GA working on Verizon during COVID and George Floyd’s murder, constantly being asked when it is and isn’t okay to post content. I’ve always been the “it’s better safe than sorry” guy when it comes to this stuff, and my answer was always “there’s never a reason to not just wait til tomorrow or the next day.” And with those two moments, I’d take the same approach I did then. But as the world’s returned to normal, things have changed. I monitored social closely after the Trump assassination attempt, and during the debates, and during the election. My advice was brands should steer clear and not push any campaigns during the window. But as I watched? I didn’t sense any bit of negativity towards the brands that kept on truckin’. I’m not saying to keep your brand on always no matter what’s happening in the world. Nationwide and global events happen, and are worth shutting things down for. The COVID shutdown and George Floyd murders I mentioned earlier? I’d still tell every brand to turn everything off for a few days if they happened again. But a regional event, even one as devastating as this, probably doesn’t warrant turning off your brand social. Your brand sells to the entire country, and the entire world. One state going through pain (even a state I love and was raised in) is ultimately a fraction of your audience, and I don’t believe anyone would actually fault your brand for posting. When You’re Starting, Just Sell. What do Google, Salesforce, the U.S. Department of State, and the Athena Grill in Santa Clara (California) have in common? They were all clients of e-Nor, the firm that I cofounded in 2003. It’s probably not hard to guess which of these came first. When you’re starting out in business, just sell. Don’t worry too much about pricing or about the stature of the companies that are willing to work with you. Even if you’re positioning yourself as a premium service provider and your hourly rate target is high, it’s OK to offer deep discounts to the first clients. Until you’re established, you basically need to do whatever it takes to close those first deals and get those first “logos” onto your website and into your marketing materials. If you can get the clients to provide testimonials after the discounted deals, all the better. Each logo and testimonial should be a stepping stone to the next. As you build a client base, you can feature the higher-profile logos. And you can gradually climb to the hourly rate that you were originally targeting. Working for free In these two instances, it could be strategic to even work for free: - to impress a prospect who could become a large client - to enter a new market For free work, limit the scope. You could offer a sample audit or another micro-sized service that would allow you to demonstrate your expertise while avoiding a big time commitment. And run away from anyone who directly asks you to work for free. They’re not your kind of client, and they’re not going to help your business. Giving back Since we’re discussing pricing, I’m compelled to point out a case in which I do unequivocally advocate providing your services for free. If you know me at all, you know I’m a big fan of giving back. Even if cash flow is slow and your budget is tight, you can always offer your services, expertise, and insights for free to causes and projects you find meaningful. Whether it’s a local nonprofit or a national advocacy group, countless organizations could greatly benefit from your expertise but may not have the means to afford it or even seek it out. The benefits are the rewarding feelings you’ll receive from contributing. Always give expecting nothing in return; it always amazes me how much comes back when you give freely.

I'm NOT speaking at brightonSEO in San Diego, and I couldn't be happier about that! I love BrightonSEO, and I'm thrilled to be ATTENDING instead of speaking because speaking at conferences is a LOT of work, at least for me... I tend to go way overboard with my presentations: 🔹 Months of data gathering and analysis. 🔹 Thinking about my data and my presentation obsessively in almost every waking moment leading up to the date. 🔹 Procrastinating about creating my slides until the few days before the event. 🔹 Locking myself in my office for the 3 days before the event and ignoring all other work while I stressfully try to get my presentation and slides done. 🔹 Working on the slides on the plane to the event (while other people watch movies) 🔹 Arriving in the city and locking myself in my hotel room trying to finish my slides while other speakers and attendees enjoy getting together over food and drinks. 🔹 Pulling an all-nighter trying to get my slides done and my presentation perfect before I have to get on stage. 🔹 Missing all the other awesome presentations because I'm still in my hotel room guzzling instant coffee trying to get those remaining slides done. 🔹 Showing up at the time of my talk completely frazzled, exhausted, and stressed out. 🔹 Then getting on stage, feeling perfectly great, and delivering a kick-ass talk that is well-received. Lol. 🔹 Then enjoying that high for the rest of the day/evening while I hang with my SEO friends (this is the best part). 🔹 Then crashing so hard the night of the event before I get on a plane and go home. I know this is just me and other speakers are a lot more planned, organized, and chill about speaking, but after presenting dozens of times at SEO conferences, I have come to terms with the fact that I am unable to do it any other way. I'm too much of an obsessive perfectionist about it. And it sucks. It sucks because I miss most of the event and all the things that make conferences awesome! So I cannot wait for BrightonSEO San Diego where I am NOT speaking. 🔹 I won't have any stress at all. 🔹 I'll get to spend time with my wonderful local search pals, Joy Hawkins, Greg Gifford, and Krystal Taing. 🔹 I'll get to hang out with awesome friends like Noah Learner and Nick LeRoy at the SEO Slack Community Boardwalk Bash. 🔹 I'll get to attend all the incredible talks. 🔹 I'll come away feeling freaking awesome, filled with new knowledge, and excited to start implementing everything I learned at BrightonSEO San Diego.
