A few PMM and leadership ‘notes to self’ going into 2025 - The basics stay the same, even in our AI-hyped world. Entry-level or SVP, you need to obsess over segmentation, targeting, positioning and messaging. Are you: clear, simple, compelling and differentiated? Are you listening to your customers (IRL) and tweaking as needed? - Data driven ICP. Where are you winning? What does external research (if you can afford it) say about your sweet spot? How can you move beyond basics like revenue and size into technographics and sentiment based segmentation? Pick a smaller surface area with a higher likelihood of actually winning - Always act like you’re about to go out of business. This will help focus you and your team on two things: growth and efficiency. Prioritize only those initiatives that have a straight line to pipeline or revenue, and those that help your team move faster. All else is BS. This applies to the basics 👆🏽as well. - Team leads, 2nd, 3rd line managers. Take a second to think about what you (and only you) can do really well. Find your key rising leaders and delegate the rest through them. Then get back to your superpowers - PMMs are in a unique position to galvanize their companies for growth. Whether you cover a segment, persona, product, portfolio - think about who your ‘growth team’ is. This includes product, key sales leaders, ops, field marketing, maybe strategy and pricing. Rally them to test a few key growth ideas - a new target audience, a new messaging hook, a new offer, a new launch…🤷🏽♂️ 2025 is when you break silos and make growth happen. - You can’t control the macro environment, inflation, SaaS buying trends etc. But you can control how you show up every day. Is it with focus, purpose, intensity and a desire to truly help your team and organization? You’ll be just fine. Happy New Year! Let’s get this done.

It's that time of year for us marketeers- annual planning! Earlier this Fall I had an opportunity to discuss the topic with Jason Lyman, Dan Kimball and Brian Regan and the folks Spectrum Equity pulled together this great blog post summarizing our discussion. Together we shared our approach to some of the most common questions around marketing annual planning, including some resources, frameworks and watch-outs. Having spent nearly 4 years creating and leading the Marketing Strategy & Planning function within eBay North America in the early 2000's it brought back many familiar scenarios and reminders. I had the honor of working under three amazing CMOs early in my eBay career Gary Briggs, Kip Knight, and Mike Linton. Features include: 🔎 Find Your Voting Location: Google Search and Maps will assist U.S. voters in locating their polling places. 🗳️ How to Vote: Typing queries like “how to vote” on Google Search will provide authoritative info directly from state election offices, thanks to a partnership with Democracy Works 🗞️ Real-Time Election Results: Starting on Election Day, you can visit Google Search for live updates on election results, in collaboration with The Associated Press. This feature will be available in the days to follow as well. This is the fifth presidential election I’ve been able to work on at Google and it’s always energizing to work with a team of people who are so committed to the democratic process and ensure we show up in a responsible and helpful way.
