Waymo's rapid expansion (and the overall safety of autonomous vehicles) is a major driver of real estate change hiding in plain site. Waymo is already doing over 150k paid trips per week in SF, LA, Austin, and Phoenix. And, in their first 22 million miles, Waymo also reported 84% fewer airbag deployments, 73% fewer injury-causing crashes, and 48% fewer police-reported crashes than human drivers over the same distance. AVs have arrived, and they're not going anywhere but up and to the right. Saw the news of their expansion to Miami yesterday—coincidentally, the same day Brad Hargreaves mailed out another great Thesis Driven letter on what AVs might mean for hospitality. Brad's take, which I agree with, is that AVs will increase the distance people are willing to travel for an experience at a resort or in nature and hospitality companies will own their own AV fleets that are an extension of their brand and the overall experience they want to provide guests. On top of gas stations and parking garages, which Brad mentions as asset classes obviously impacted by AVs, we'll see entirely new real estate businesses created to serve this ever-roaming fleet of vehicles, like mass-charging stations. Revv — provider of an AI-powered platform that automates the research required to understand ADAS repairs — has announced more than $20 million in funding. Left Lane Capital led the round, which included continued participation from Soma Capital, 1984 and Agalé Ventures. “Every day, skilled technicians struggled with the myriad of repair procedures and the dense rulesets that vary by make, model and trim. These challenges weren’t just technical; they directly undermined business efficiency and profitability,” said Adi Bathla, CEO and co-founder of Revv. “Recognizing the need for a change, we devised a system that exponentially cut down the research time for ADAS repairs.” Revv’s platform leverages advanced large language models to condense hours of diagnostic research into seconds, aggregating data from over 60 sources to provide repair packages for such ADAS systems as automatic braking, adaptive cruise control and lane departure warnings. “The hardware-agnostic system integrates seamlessly with all shop equipment and the full estimation software suite, ensuring immediate access to essential diagnostic information for all team members,” the company stated. “Additionally, the embedded feedback loop from technicians enables continuous self-learning and improvement.” According to the company, Revv has expanded to more than 2,100 repair locations in 16 months. “After an extensive market analysis of AI applications that genuinely solve problems and add value to end customers, Revv is among the strongest we’ve seen,” stated Dan Ahrens, managing partner at Left Lane Capital. “They’ve built a solution that demonstrates a deep understanding of industry needs, positioning them as an essential platform for modern vehicle repairs. Their team is exceptional, and we are excited to partner with them long term.” This comes as Revv is expanding its capabilities with the introduction of auto-quoting and advanced documentation tools. Also, the company has secured distribution agreements to boost its presence in the mechanical repair market. When Ascend Elements CTO and co-founder Eric Gratz first started working in the #EV #battery materials industry back in 2012, cost was perceived as the biggest hurdle to widespread adoption of #electric vehicles. “At that time U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) estimated that batteries would need to be at the $100 per kwh price point for EVs to reach price parity with internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles. This is what drove a lot of the early grant funding, including our initial research into direct precursor synthesis. Today, EV #batteries in China have fallen well below the $100kWh and batteries in North America are approaching that price point, which is making electric vehicles more affordable than ever.” Most early adopters started driving EVs for the #environment. They were willing to pay extra to protect the environment. But now, lower #lithium-ion battery prices are making many long-range EVs less expensive than the average ICE vehicles. This opens the door to a whole new, larger segment of the market. “Does electric mobility display racial or income disparities?” Based on high-resolution analysis by a team led by Robert Dong-Yeon Lee, the definitive answer is "yes." EVs and charging infrastructure exhibit more income and racial inequality than conventional vehicles and gas stations. See the article just published in Applied Energy. In the U.S., the more electrified the vehicle, from hybrid to battery-electric, the greater the income inequality. Also, across the U.S., EV charging infrastructure is three times more “income unequal” than gas stations, and the faster the charge, the greater the income inequality. Georgia has an interesting profile. In 2015, it was second to California in EVs on the road, following 5 years with a generous EV tax credit. Since then, GA has had one of the lowest EV growth rates in the U.S.; it has slipped to #8 in EV registrations, but is now #5 in EV manufacturing. For both EV charging infrastructure and EV registrations, data for Georgia indicates a high-income bias in adoption, but no racial bias. This is consistent with Drawdown Georgia survey data and highlights the complexities of our 50 U.S. states.

Residual values of electric vehicles (EVs) are declining, which poses a significant challenge for EV adoption. This decline in residual values makes leasing EVs more expensive for automakers and consumers. The resale values of electric cars are generally much lower than those of their internal combustion engine counterparts, primarily due to rapid technological advancements, market dynamics, and higher initial purchase prices that do not translate well into the used car market. We couldn't agree more with Rivian's Alan Hoffman "the LCFS features prominently in the state’s climate Scoping Plan. It’s no wonder, given the policy’s many benefits for transportation electrification. The state’s EV goals mean that it has never been more important to ensure that the LCFS is strong and stable." If policymakers and environmental advocates are serious about lowering #GHG emissions as quickly as possible, in order to both speed reductions in air pollution to disproportionately-impacted communities AND minimize costs for transitioning to cleaner fuels, they need to take a technology-neutral "all of the above" approach that leverages the innovation of markets and economic incentives. California Air Resources Board's Low Carbon Fuel Standard has already exceeded every transportation fuel carbon intensity-reduction target set, and as Rivian and other EV industry companies and LCFC members like EVgo, CleanFuture, Inc., and Bridge to Renewables (BTR) have repeatedly noted: "Under the LCFS, clean fuels earn credits that producers of dirty fuels buy to achieve compliance with the standard. The resulting market multiplies the business opportunity for companies up and down the clean transportation value chain. In Rivian’s case [...] fast chargers generate credits when they charge EVs on the road, while fleet owners earn credits when they charge our vans and trucks in their depots. Waymo raised an additional $5.6 Billion to fund its activities. With over 150,000 paid driverless trips and 1 million fully autonomous miles per week, Waymo is clearly the leader of passenger autonomous driving. Waymo has shared cost reduction plans with new vehicles having fewer sensors and is opening new markets and business partnership deals to shoulder some of the operational costs. X (formerly twitter) user EV Industrial Complex shared a back of the envelope estimate for Waymo profitability. While the cost estimates look low and missing some elements, they do offer an indication of gross margins and potential for margin improvement. So why the hefty round?  Because Waymo’s current market is just a small fraction of the potential addressable #AV market. The Waymo announcement hints at new use cases: “We’ll also continue advancing the Waymo Driver… to support a variety of business applications over time.”  Could we be looking at the return of the Waymo One trucking or other use cases?  Or perhaps a software licensing model for other evolving (and less operationally complex) use cases? The company has also been added to the Chinese government's approved procurement list.' If tariffs are Layer 1 to the US/China automotive battle, data in and around ADAS and AV is Layer 2. Layer 3 is likely satellite comms to the vehicles, 5-10 years out."

The BMW i3 REX was the first attempt to market an extended-range EV—a BEV with a generator—but it didn’t quite succeed. Can larger EREVs improve both GHG emissions and consumer acceptance while reducing dependence on DC fast charging? The answer may lie beyond technology alone. New policy tools that reflect real-world fleet performance can encourage OEMs to support frequent charging and earn credits when they do. Current tools, like utility factors and supply-side regulations, are not a sufficient starting point, but many OEMs are exploring promising new technologies, engines, and fuels that may show potential for deep GHG reductions with regular charging may not be a good starting point, but many OEMS are testing new technologies, engines and fuels that shows high potential. https://lnkd.in/gzrMpFBA
