This concept, the end-to-end ecosystem is actually very much also a part of ParkMyFleet’s DNA. We welcome every type of fleet and the company has comprehensive offerings, including servicing, cleaning, charging/fueling and remarketing, among many others. Context is totally key to any decision, whether that is from a human or a machine. But the idea that we can build a system that understands, at that very second, what a human is feeling, doing or dealing with is pure fantasy. On top of which, with DMS, have car companies and their suppliers mapped every face on the planet? No, of course not. Well, they'd better lawyer up or they're going to get sued into oblivion for potential bias, racism or exclusion. We need to slam a hard brake on the idea that we can make technology deal with issues on the road. The evidence is quite contrary, after a decade of this being installed on public roads. We need a serious and proper discussion about what it can and cannot do or should be used on or for.

There's a good coverage of the interview I gave SAE International in anticipation of my talk at #WCX in #Detroit last week. We discuss how traditional and new automotive companies are different but also beginning to learn from one another. In that interview I also point out that established automakers are exceedingly practiced at R&D, design, engineering, manufacturing and distribution, a process that is sometimes overlooked, dismissed, ignored by newcomers. And I also explain that newcomers are diving headfirst into the digital world, and with software, they can innovate much more quickly because coding something new goes much faster than building new hardware. The deal represents a strategic effort by VW to align itself with faster-moving, tech-driven startups to gain a competitive edge in the rapidly evolving EV sector. Rivian’s strength lies in its innovative software and computing systems, which VW hopes to leverage as the traditional auto giant transitions from internal combustion engines to electric powertrains. For Rivian, this partnership brings a much-needed infusion of capital—$5.8 billion, up from the previously expected $5 billion—as well as the backing of a global automotive powerhouse that can help it scale operations. In exchange, VW will access Rivian’s cutting-edge technology, particularly its expertise in integrating software with hardware. This collaboration comes as automakers recognize the importance of making their vehicles highly connected and software-driven, much like smartphones. SCOOP: Nissan Motor Corporation expects to cut U.S. production by 17% - or more than 100,000 vehicles - during fiscal 2024, which ends March 31. That's shy of the 20% global production cut the automaker plans to manage oversupply and ballooning costs. In a planning document sent to suppliers in November and reviewed by Automotive News, Nissan said it expects to build 503,202 vehicles in Canton, Miss., and Smyrna, Tenn., in the fiscal year, down from 605,435 the prior year. Nissan will make 12,554 fewer vehicles, or 4.8 percent less than previously planned in the second half of the fiscal year. The automaker is trimming the output of several high-volume light trucks, including 6,438 Frontier midsize pickups and 2,010 Rogue compact crossovers. On average, Nissan dealers sold 400 fewer new vehicles per store for the 12 months ending in the third quarter compared with Q3 2019, according to buy-sell advisory firm Haig Partners. Meanwhile, dealers industrywide sold 86 fewer vehicles in that period. Nissan suppliers say they’ve priced their products for higher volumes than the automaker is delivering. “We don’t build plants just to break even. We’re going to have to have a conversation with Nissan at the end of the [fiscal] year about recouping some of this cost,” a source said. Suppliers need to be within a margin of error of the original production forecast, said Sam Fiorani, vice president at AutoForecast Solutions LLC. "Any significant variance from that will hit their bottom line because they’ve tooled up for that volume,” Fiorani said.

Mobileye is a leading voice in the future of automated vehicle safety and driving technologies. While some practitioners operate in theoretical realms of future benefits, Mobileye's team is in the trenches, testing and deploying systems available to OEMs and consumers. It was a pleasure watching Johann's presentation at Global NCAP and speaking afterwards. Roughly 620,000 people die each year in G20 countries from motor vehicle related crashes. We will know that progress is being made when G20 policymakers and regulators work with the same sense of urgency to promote road safety vehicle technologies and infrastructure improvements as they now focus on electric vehicle technologies. The total five-year cost of weather and climate related disasters in the United States (2018-2022) is $595 billion (NOAA NCEI). During that same period, motor vehicle crashes cost $1.7 trillion. The FHWA invests roughly $55 billion for road improvements, motor vehicle crashes result in $75 billion in annual healthcare related costs. All the United States climate-related deaths since 1980 barely approach 16,000. The U.S. loses more people in motor vehicle crashes in 6-months in any given year. Climate-change is an important issue to address. It pales in comparison to the epidemic of death on U.S. and G20 roadways. Fortunately, companies like Mobileye have their eyes fixed on a safe-systems approach to improving roadway safety. They invest private-sector dollars seeking to empower consumers in selecting safety improvements. Unlike EVs, Mobileye's technology is unlikely to receive government subsidies to purchase these safety improvements. How is that possible?

Some automotive suppliers are cutting jobs because of slowdowns in automakers' electrification plans, often reluctantly because of how difficult it can be to fill roles to begin with. Automakers are rolling back their electric vehicle plans in the face of lower-than-expected sales growth in North America, creating ripple effects throughout the supply chain.
