Following up on my recent post about architectural debt in D365 F&O, I wanted to share some additional insights about ISV data storage that emerged from that same technical review. While there can be legitimate reasons for external data storage - regulatory compliance, specialized processing needs, or genuine integration requirements - the patterns we're seeing are concerning. 🔍 The Reality Check: Some ISVs have valid reasons for external data: • Tax engines requiring jurisdictional storage • EDI solutions needing guaranteed message delivery • Advanced planning requiring specialized processing • Compliance demanding specific retention policies But here's what we actually found: • External storage chosen for development convenience • Unnecessary data duplication across systems • Poor integration architecture • Vendor lock-in through data architecture • "Performance" used as a catch-all justification ⚠️ The Technical Impact: Recent industry research and our implementation reviews show common patterns: • Frequent data inconsistency issues • Unnecessary performance degradation • Significant challenges during D365 updates • Increased audit complexity • Higher long-term maintenance costs 🎯 What Technical Leaders Need to Know: 1. Challenge ISVs on their data architecture decisions 2. Distinguish between necessary and convenient external storage 3. Evaluate the true cost of architectural complexity 4. Consider the impact on upgrades and compliance 5. Question vendor lock-in implications Key Evaluation Criteria: • Is external storage truly necessary or just convenient? • How are transaction boundaries maintained? • What's the synchronization strategy? • How are upgrades handled? • What's the impact on total cost of ownership? The market for enterprise applications grew 12% in 2023, to $356 billion thanks to the adoption of AI and generative AI according to IDC. “With just 0.2% of market share separating SAP and Salesforce, IDC regards these two companies as statistically tied for the number 1 position in the worldwide enterprise applications market for 2023,” it said in a new study, Worldwide Enterprise Applications Software Forecast, 2024–2028.
