We’re excited to share that the Virginia State Corporation Commission's Geothermal Workgroup Report has been submitted to the Virginia General Assembly. We are proud to have helped develop this report, which marks a significant step in evaluating how geothermal heating and cooling systems can play a role in Virginia's renewable energy portfolio. The report reflects the collective insights of diverse stakeholders from the geothermal industry, utilities, government agencies, and advocacy organizations. It addressed the complex challenges of implementing a geothermal renewable energy credit (GREC) carve-out. The resulting report offers actionable recommendations for enhancing the feasibility of geothermal integration in renewable energy programs. The outcomes of this effort are not only relevant for Virginia but offer a blueprint for other states seeking to innovate in renewable energy policy. EEI President and CEO Dan R. Brouillette issued a statement following the package of final rules for power plants released today by EPA:   “EPA’s suite of new regulations will affect the generation sources that will be used to reliably power America’s increasingly electricity-dependent economy, and we appreciate the agency’s efforts to align compliance deadlines to help companies make informed resource planning decisions that minimize customer costs.   “While we appreciate and support EPA’s work to develop a clear, continued path for the transition to cleaner resources, we are disappointed that the agency did not address the concerns we raised about carbon capture and storage (CCS). THIS JUST IN 🗞️♻️ The DOE’s Bioenergy Technologies Office (BETO) and National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) have announced the 2024 community partners for the Waste-to-Energy (WTE) Technical Assistance for State, Local, and Tribal Governments Program. This initiative will provide technical support to 20 communities across 14 states, helping them turn waste into valuable energy resources. We're happy to hear that waste resources for consideration this year were expanded to include plastics, paper, cardboard, and wood waste. With so much waste on our hands, we may as well convert it into energy. #wastetoenergy #wastetovalue #energytransition

A new report from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) looks at the technical potential of Grid Enhancing Technologies and suggests levers for stakeholders to accelerate deployment. In "Pathways to Commercial Liftoff: Innovative Grid Deployment" the DOE says: "These findings represent an urgent call to action for regulators, utilities and all grid stakeholders to evaluate the opportunity to deploy these types of solutions to improve the reliability and affordability of the grid today." "Liftoff will be achieved when utilities and regulators comprehensively value and integrate advanced solutions as part of core grid investment, planning and operations. The DOE Grid Deployment Office has been studying how expanding transmission could help: ✅ integrate more renewable energy ✅ lower the cost of energy generation ✅ decrease carbon emissions from grid operations A new PNNL report, part of the National Transmission Planning Study, shows that with careful planning, new transmission lines and renewables would be able to keep the western grid stable even with high energy demand. 💡

Jennifer Faupel, PE, CEM gave a recent interview to the DOE Federal Energy Management Program (FEMP) about her team's recent win of the prestigious 2023 Federal Energy and Water Management Award (FEMWA) for their outstanding contributions to the U.S. Department of State's Utility Analytics Program (UAP). The team was recognized by FEMP for their successful implementation of a centralized data system using EnergyCAP, LLC software, which transformed manual processes into automated, data-driven insights collected from 130 currencies and 44 languages. This achievement has led to significant operational improvements and $1.8 million in cost avoidance for the Department of State, driving efficiency and sustainability within the global portfolio. "Sometimes just having that extra pat on the back is enough to keep you going when you feel like you've been trudging through," she said about the benefits of nominating peers for such awards. "They're not the flashy things that everybody likes to recognize, but when you're working on some of that behind-the-scenes work, it's very nice to get recognized for that." These zones, located in areas with the highest concentration of low-cost renewable energy potential, would be connected to major load centers via long-distance, high-voltage transmission lines. The benefits are compelling. By optimizing energy generation costs and leveraging the best renewable resources, IREZs could keep electricity prices low and enhance grid reliability. However, the success of IREZs depends on collaboration among states, utilities, and landowners along transmission corridors. The IREZ study is part of the larger National Transmission Planning Study, which aims to identify transmission options that provide broad-scale benefits to electric customers and accelerate decarbonization while maintaining system reliability.
