India and China differences run deep, two Asian countries that constitute 40% of the world’s population. They have tried to manage their differences, have cooperated on global issues, and have built a robust economic relationship, but they remain rivals, and in 2020 their troops were involved in a fracas in the Himalayan borderlands. Why are the two stubbornly at odds? Historically, the two countries had respect for one another. Buddhism, which originated from India, was revered by the Chinese. India held Imperial China in high regard. The ongoing territory disputes are over tracts of land in Ladakh/Aksai Chin and in Arunachal Pradesh in India’s northwest and northeast. Also at issue is Tibet. From India’s perspective, a more autonomous Tibet could limit the Chinese troop presence along the border. China sees Tibet as vital for border security with India. Since 1949, both have never been on the same side in international politics. During the Cold War, India aligned with the Soviet Union, whereas China aligned with the Soviet Union and the US. Both were also never aligned with each other against the other two powers. After the Cold War, their alignments drifted to the point where India has much more cooperation with the US and China is closer to post-Soviet Russia. This pattern of partnerships has meant that Delhi and Beijing have no history of strategic collaboration to balance against their negative perceptions of each other and their conflicts in the perimeters. Overall, China's development is years ahead of India. Consequence is that from a position of strength, China does not see why it should offer India any concessions. Realising that it is behind China, India is unwilling to make concessions that could be seen as surrendering. As a result, the two rarely agree on anything. However, India-China ties may see thaw four years after border skirmish froze relations. Ahead of the BRICS summit this month, both reached a significant agreement on de-escalating border tensions. Indian Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar said the deal would allow border patrols to be conducted the way they used to be in 2020, ostensibly before the Galwan Valley clash. Significantly, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping held their first formal bilateral dialogue in five years on the sidelines of Kazan, Russia. Xi acknowledged the responsibilities of both nations to boost the strength and unity of developing countries. China is reigning in "wolf warriors diplomacy" that alienated her from her neighbours and the west, whereas India needs to import from China intermediate products and grant friendlier visa approval to Chinese technical personnel, to help India build manufacturing capacity. The Indian Ocean is the next battleground for primacy and prosperity. That will be a true evolution to the next stage of GCCs. The ultimate goal is for GCCs to integrate completely into the parent organization. It may seem like GCCs will lose their identity -- which is true -- but then that is how the overall organization becomes stronger. Let the river merge into the ocean.

While Global Capability Centers (GCCs) have long been the driving force of innovation and efficiency for global companies in India, there’s a new player making waves—LCCs, or Local Capability Centers, set up by Indian giants to support and centralize their own operations. Indian corporations like Reliance, Adani, and Bank of Baroda are now establishing these centers to boost their tech capabilities and streamline business processes. Take, for example, 𝐁𝐚𝐧𝐤 𝐨𝐟 𝐁𝐚𝐫𝐨𝐝𝐚’𝐬 𝐁𝐚𝐫𝐨𝐝𝐚 𝐒𝐮𝐧 𝐓𝐞𝐜𝐡𝐧𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐢𝐞𝐬, a fully-owned subsidiary leading digital transformation for the bank and consolidating its tech resources. Such models offer immense potential for financial and other sectors, where a centralized tech and innovation strategy can reduce external dependencies and align operations with business growth. But how does this connect to the GCC model that started it all? 𝐆𝐥𝐨𝐛𝐚𝐥 𝐂𝐚𝐩𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐂𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐬 (𝐆𝐂𝐂𝐬) 𝐨𝐫 𝐂𝐚𝐩𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐂𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐫𝐞𝐬 initially transformed the landscape by centralizing operations for Fortune 500 companies in India, creating an economic powerhouse. Now numbering over 1,600, GCCs have expanded into high-value areas like AI, product management, and cybersecurity. They employ millions, with projections to reach 1.9 million jobs and $121 billion in revenue by 2030. Companies like JPMorgan Chase and Goldman Sachs use their Indian GCCs as hubs for advanced technology and business solutions that drive their global strategies. LCCs are essentially India’s homegrown version of GCCs, riding the wave of streamlined efficiency to serve internal markets. With nearly 50 LCCs established, these centers could redefine resource management for Indian firms, much like GCCs have for global companies. 🌍 Could this be the next frontier in India’s tech and business innovation?
