I agree with Marc BAILLAVOINE CTO of Synamedia when it comes to his predictions for 2025, but particularly on one point, here is why Marc anticipates that 2025 will mark the beginning of significant efforts to standardize short-form video and live stream delivery across social media platforms. Currently, each platform operates on its own technology stack, making collaboration challenging. As existing Content Delivery Networks (CDNs) approach their capacity limits, establishing these standards becomes crucial. Initiatives like Media Over QUIC and the Streaming Video Technology Alliance (SVTA) working groups are promising steps toward this goal. My interview this year with Michelle Munson gave me a huge insight into how much potential there is in the CDN space to expand and advance when it comes to CDN technology. Blinx, launched in September 2023, is a digital media hub that connects Gen Z and Millennials across multiple screens, platforms, and smart devices, offering fresh perspectives and authentic storytelling. If I draw on the topics I have been discussing with broadcasters, vendors and innovators in the creator economy space, I predict that traditional broadcasters will aggressively adopt hybrid OTT/social media formats in 2025. I feel like they need to, should do and that the whole market would benefit from exapanding commercial and operational lessons from platforms like Blinx and DramaPops We already saw some of these gains recently in STARZPLAY when Maaz Sheikh made a post about how much their AI powered recommendation engine created a 68% uplift in playback time and 39% more content clicks (post here https://lnkd.in/dJJEaZUg) This strategic shift will engage new demographics, modernize content delivery, and rejuvenate their broadcasters catalogs, to align with the evolving landscape when it comes to viewer preferences and the benefits of technological advancements. Over the weekend, James Cridland posted an article highlighting the recent data showing that #streaming of AM/FM (not #radio writ large) has overtaken OTA in the UK. It's an interesting read that sheds light on the nuances of the situation given the deployment of DAB (a technology we do not rely on here in the US.) What does this mean for #stations here in the US? We've seen a steady increase in the share of the audience consuming their favorite stations via the #digital stream over the last 5 years. In fact, some demographics now register over 25% of their listening of #AM/FM radio through digital streaming platforms. STREAMING VIDEO: Despite being a market where broadcasters are making great strides in moving to a streaming model, and with TV manufacturers such as SAMSUNG reporting that a high percentage of TVs sold in Australia are never connected to an antenna, Australian consumers wanting to migrate fully to IP still face some restrictions. Even whilst Hubbl's current marketing is promoting TV without cumbersome coax cables, those attempting to watch free TV in Australia without a digtal terrestrial antenna or satellite TV service may find their sports viewing options are somewhat limited. Anyone trying to watch AFL games on Channel 7 via IP, be that via a PC browser, via the 7Plus app on smart TVs, streaming devices or a Hubbl that's not connected to DTT are greeted instead with repeats of Border Patrol with this scrolling message: 'Sorry! We don't currently have the rights to stream the AFL on 7plus. To watch the game, tune in on broadcast via your aerial, or find more of your favourite shows on 7plus. Stay tuned - the AFL rights are coming, live and free, from season 2025'. As our smart TV home screens gravitate to global viewing, it stands to reason that expanding the Geo-Block ban on the audio-visual sector must include expiration of regional licences and introduce one single content licence. Not just for Europe, but for every streaming territory as a whole. Although much can be said about content quotas, they are in fact near-sighted to the fact that technology and consumers are driving this demand because of the content choices audiences are making. Netflix features content in over 60 languages, with 80% of the platform’s users claiming to use subtitles at least once a week. This implies that content providers would be compelled to make movies and TV shows unlicensed in one country but sold in a neighbour available on the same streaming service on the same device in Amsterdam or Sydney. STREAMING BUNDLES: Is the cable box making a comeback!? Subscriber churn remains an issue for SVOD services – 42% of US streaming subscribers report that they “'regularly subscribe, cancel and resubscribe,” according to Ampere’s Media Consumer survey covering 1Q24. But bundling streaming services can have a significant impact on mitigating the issue. Ampere cites Disney subscribers as an example: Consumers who had previously churned and then returned to take the Disney+/Hulu/ESPN+ bundle are 59% less likely to churn within 12 months than those who take Disney+ alone, based on 1Q23 sign-ups. Ampere also found that US resubscribers skew younger (aged 18-44), are more likely to be in family households, and are typically avid media consumers. And with that wide media diet, the cohort is 40% more likely than average to exhibit signs of subscription fatigue and 21% more likely to desire unified access to content across different services. Which makes bundles, Ampere concludes, a key strategy in subscriber retention. The cable box is making a comeback! This time, it's on your mobile device$!

Sky and Amazon extend collaboration agreement. Media giant Sky (Sky TV, Sky Broadband etc.) has announced an extension to its long-term relationship with Amazon. This means that 'Prime Video' apps and related content will continue to be available on Sky devices (e.g. Sky Q, Sky Glass, Sky Stream etc.). The agreement was first signed in 2020. Sky has agreed to offer the Amazon Prime Video streaming service to millions of customers across Europe. This partnership has allowed both streaming platforms to extend their reach in some of their key markets, giving Amazon customers the opportunity to watch original productions and content previously only available on Sky. The new deal builds on the existing partnership to ensure that Sky customers will continue to have access to Prime Video’s Premier League and UEFA Champions League football, as well as hit shows including Clarkson's Farm, LOL: Last One Laughing, The Boys and many more. Prime Video content will remain alongside award-winning Sky Originals such as 'Rob & Romesh Vs' and 'League of their Own', as well as Sky's unrivaled live sports and news content and popular programming from partners including Netflix, Apple TV, Disney+, BBC, ITV and Channel 4. Nick Herm, Chief Business Officer, said in a recent statement that they want to provide users with a platform that brings all their favorite apps and channels together in one place. He highlighted that the renewed partnership with Prime Video will allow Sky users to enjoy award-winning content across all available devices. Barry Furlong, VP Prime Video Europe, noted that users of both platforms appreciate having access to the wide range of their favorite TV series, movies or live sports available on both platforms. The extension agreement applies to Sky’s outlets in the UK, Ireland, Germany, Austria, Italy and Switzerland. The main objective of the collaboration between the two platforms has been to integrate their services to improve the viewing experience for customers across Europe.
