yieldHUB has semiconductor customers from 13 countries. Customers have, on average, been with us for 5 years. 33% have been with us for at least 5 years and 20% have been with us for more than 10 years. With few exceptions, customers are well funded private companies or well known and publicly quoted companies. Some dropped off over the years, but we grow net customers every year, this year being the second fastest of net customer growth after 2021 (move to cloud tech for big data accelerated during and just after Covid). 50% of payments by all customers are either on time or ahead of time. The payment average is 4 days over payment terms this year so far, 3 days over being the median. But every one of them has paid what they are supposed to, and that's going back 19 years. However, #Samsung remains cautious about further production increases to avoid impacting NAND Flash price trends. The report indicates that while Samsung’s NAND Flash production lines can exceed 2 million wafers in a quarter at full capacity, internal targets for wafer output in the second to fourth quarters are capped at 1.2 million wafers each, maintaining overall utilization rate at around 50%. The same report further indicates that SK hynix has set a quarterly cap of around 600,000 #wafers for NAND Flash production, with overall utilization rate ranging between 50% and 60%. Contract Price Increases Offset Seasonal Slump, Boosting #DRAM Q1 Revenue by 5.1%, Says TrendForce Corporation TrendForce reveals that the #DRAM industry experienced a 5.1% revenue increase in 1Q24 compared to the previous quarter. This growth—reaching US$18.35 billion—was driven by rising contract prices for mainstream products, with the price increase being more significant than in 4Q23. As a result, most companies in the industry continued to see revenue growth. The top three suppliers experienced a decline in shipments in the first quarter, demonstrating the industry’s off-season effect. Additionally, downstream companies had higher inventory levels, which led to a significant reduction in #procurement volume. As for ASP, the top three suppliers continued to benefit from contract price increases seen in 4Q23. With inventory levels still healthy, there was a strong intention to raise prices. #Mobile DRAM saw the highest price increase out of all applications thanks to strong sales of Chinese #smartphones. #DRAM Industry Revenue Surges 24.8% in 2Q24, Upward Revision of Contract Price Increase for Q3, Says TrendForce Corporation TrendForce’s latest findings reveal that the DRAM industry saw a significant revenue increase to US$22.9 billion in the second quarter of 2024—a QoQ growth of 24.8%. This surge was driven by expanded shipments of mainstream products that boosted revenue for most #manufacturers. Contract prices remained on an upward trend in the second quarter, and due to #geopolitical factors, the increase in conventional DRAM contract prices for the third quarter is now expected to exceed previous forecasts. Key players Samsung Electronics, SK hynix, and Micron Technology all reported increased shipments in Q2 compared to the previous quarter. ASP also continued to rise following the first quarter’s trend. Contributing factors included the earthquake that struck #Taiwan in early April and the high demand for #HBM products, which shifted DRAM buyers toward more aggressive procurement strategies. Consequently, Q2 contract prices saw a final adjustment of 13%–18%. TrendForce highlighted that #Samsung benefited from a 17%–19% increase in ASP, with bit shipments also rising slightly, leading to revenue growth for DRAM of 22% to $9.82 billion as the company maintained its market-leading position. #SKhynix saw its bit shipments increase by over 20%—driven by the certification and mass shipment of its #HBM3e products—resulting in a substantial revenue increase of 38.7% to $7.91 billion. #Micron's Q2 revenue rose by 14.1% to $4.5 billion despite a slight decrease in ASP, as bit shipments grew by 15%–16%. Winbond secures NOR flash orders from Apple for 3Q24, say sources #Winbond Electronics has grabbed 45nm NOR flash orders from Apple, with shipments kicking off in the third quarter, according to industry sources. The orders may help the #Taiwan-based company capture a larger market share from its Chinese counterpart, GigaDevice Semiconductor Inc.. The recent surge in China's domestic NOR flash manufacturing capacity has resulted in a decline in #memory prices during the latter part of this year, suffering a modest decrease of around 5% compared to the first half, sources said. The prices of NOR flash should have stabilized from their low point in the first half of 2024, sources indicated. However, the market prices have been impacted due to the conversion of a portion of Chinese foundries' fab capabilities to NOR flash, since the demand for logic ICs with mature processes has declined. Consequently, this adjustment has led to a rise in the total inventory of NOR flash. On the demand side, a slower-than-usual peak season in the third quarter, combined with a recession in China's domestic consumer markets, has contributed to the market's oversupply, according to sources. Despite the current total NOR production capacity being slightly greater than demand, prices are unlikely to fall dramatically. Interesting takeover bid to take ASMPT private by KKR. There is a lot of movement and potential consolidation in the advance packaging space, that’s growing fast, driven by AI applications. In particular hybrid bonding is of interest due to its use in 3D packaging and upcoming implementation for high bandwidth memory (HBM) stacks that are integrated with logic chips for AI processing. ASMPT has a strong packaging experience and a hybrid bonder with pretreatment modules from EVG on the market. An interesting twist is ASM International’s 25% stake in ASMPT, which has been an activist shareholder target in the past. Activists suggested in the past that there were no synergies between the companies and the stake should be divested for shareholders’ benefit. However, things change and I would argue that there are very strong synergies with ASMI’s deposition technology as ALD and new materials are introduced for advance packaging. #Samsung Starts Mass Production of 9th Generation V-NAND: 1Tb 3D TLC NAND 💡 Samsung Electronics has started mass production of its 9th generation of V-NAND #memory. The first dies based on their latest #NAND #tech come in a 1 Tb capacity using a triple-level cell (TLC) architecture, with #data transfer rates as high as 3.2 GT/s. The new 3D TLC NAND memory will initially be used to build high-capacity and high-performance #SSDs, which will help to solidify Samsung's position in the storage market. Diving right in, Samsung is conspicuously avoiding to list the number of layers in their latest generation NAND, which is the principle driving factor in increasing capacity generation-on-generation. The company's current 8th gen V-NAND is 236 layers – similar to its major competitors – and word on the street is that 9th gen V-NAND ups that to 290 layers, though this remains to be confirmed. Last week’s DAC showcased exciting announcements from startups that are revolutionizing semiconductor design however these rising stars overshadowed a major update from an industry stalwart - Alphawave Semi - whose news is poised to accelerate the proliferation of chiplets and give rise to a “chiplet marketplace”. Alphawave Semi announced a breakthrough with the tapeout of the industry's first off-the-shelf, multi-protocol I/O connectivity chiplet. This technology can seamlessly integrate into larger SoCs or multi-chip modules, giving designers increased flexibility and more connectivity options for different applications. Reflecting on the Chiplet Summit this past spring, I remember listening to Tony Chan Carusone, Alphawave’s CTO, as he passionately described the significance of chiplets and how Alphawave will foster a more open and democratic design ecosystem. Now, just one quarter later, his team has launched a technology that brings this vision much closer to becoming a reality. Adding to their momentum, Alphawave also announced an expanded partnership with Samsung Foundry to advance the industry's progression toward cutting-edge semiconductor nodes, crucial for the evolution of advanced compute. Samsung’s roadmap in sub-4nm technologies includes FinFET and Gate-All-Around, which are designed to maximize performance in the post-Moore era. Initially targeted for data centers and HPC, these innovations may trickle down to low-cost, AI-enabled edge devices, putting the transformative power of AI into the hands of billions of people worldwide. This news follows Alphawave’s early June announcement of their new partnership with Arm, aimed at unlocking the potential of processors. Alphawave will give Arm access to their robust portfolio of connectivity solutions and silicon IP, which Arm will integrate into their proven portfolio of compute cores. At a time when AI technology is accelerating at breakneck speed, many companies are searching for ways to boost compute performance and address the challenge of moving data between compute and memory more efficiently. While multiple startups offer unique solutions, many customers want battle-tested technology to avoid the risk of investing in solutions that may become obsolete by the time they reach tapeout. Alphawave has developed vital solutions and in doing so, has increased design flexibility, built bridges to new process technologies, and shortened the path to market. “Connectors” are often the catalysts of innovation and Alphwave’s is a testament to that word. I’m encouraged by what I’ve seen from Alphawave and strongly believe they stand at the forefront of an emerging chiplet marketplace. Weak Consumer Demand Leads to 28% Decline in #DRAM Module Revenue in 2023, Says TrendForce Corporation 💡 #TrendForce's latest analysis reveals that the global revenue for the DRAM module market reached US$12.5 billion in 2023—a YoY decline of 28%. This drop was primarily attributed to the #inventorycorrection period for #consumerelectronics following the #pandemic, which drove down DRAM prices.
