CSMs - It's Time to Redefine the Metrics That Matter Customer Success is NOT a quantity game. Yet, so many of us still measure our impact by:   1. The hours logged each week, as if busy equals effective.   2. The number of emails sent, assuming every ping moves the needle.   3. The endless meetings held, believing face-time guarantees success. But here’s the truth: None of this guarantees value for your customer—or your business. Here’s what really matters:   ✅ Outcome-Oriented Actions: Are your activities directly tied to achieving customer goals?   ✅ Strategic Conversations: Are your meetings uncovering true opportunities for growth?   ✅ Efficient Solutions: Are you solving issues without creating unnecessary complexity? 👉 If you’re just “checking the boxes” to hit activity quotas, you’re missing the bigger picture. Customer Success isn’t about doing more—it’s about doing what matters. Ask yourself:   - Are you measuring impact or busyness?   - Do your customers feel seen and understood, or are they just another item on your to-do list?   - Is your success defined by the customer’s outcomes, or by internal activity metrics? Let’s be bold: Challenge the obsession with vanity metrics. Replace them with value metrics:   - Customer health.   - Renewals and expansions.   - Referrals and advocacy. EQUITABLE ≠ FAIR Jamie Edwards, Head of GTM Ops & Tools at Gusto, illustrates this difference with the example of 2 types of sellers: 🤝 Relationship sellers: Super methodical reps who invest significant time to bringing in larger deals. ☎️ Quick sellers: Reps who strive on getting the quickest sale possible, and keep moving forward. Here's how the approach differs when you're assigning accounts: ⚖️ EQUITABLE: You assign an equal number of accounts to each seller. ✅ FAIR: You assign accounts based on the type of seller, i.e., more accounts for the quick seller as compared to the relationship seller.
