What are the best ways to model energy storage requirements for a building or community?
No one type of energy storage will meet all of the load requirements when placed close to buildings or in a community setting. Some (like chemical batteries) are better suited for longer-duration (4+ hours) but you have to watch for fire risks and round trip efficiency. Others (like non-chemical kinetic batteries) are best in the shorter-duration (0.2 to 4-hours) area to handle periodic peak loads that would require longer-duration systems to be oversized by a factor of 4-8 to handle the power required. Probably a hybrid approach with both long and short duration energy storage to best meet the load requirements and maintain flexibility.
