To IP or not to IP, that is the question
TechCrunch
The rise and fall of Pokémon GO begs us to ask many questions regarding how to launch a game to position it for success. One specific question it raises is whether branded intellectual property is something game makers should consider prior to launch. Branded IP is one of the most time-tested ways to launch games that go on to become immensely popular.

In this chapter, the authors describe the key indexing components of today’s web search engines. As the World Wide Web has grown, the systems and methods for indexing have changed significantly. The authors present the data structures used, the features extracted, the infrastructure needed, and the options available for designing a brand new search engine. Techniques are highlighted that improve relevance of results, discuss trade-offs to best utilize machine resources, and cover distributed processing concepts in this context. In particular, the authors delve into the topics of indexing phrases instead of terms, storage in memory vs. on disk, and data partitioning. Some thoughts on information organization for the newly emerging data-forms conclude the chapter.Other authors -

Analysis of Photonic Networks for a Chip Multiprocessor Using Scientific Applications
ACM/IEEE International Symposium on Networks-on-Chip
As multiprocessors scale to unprecedented numbers of cores in order to sustain performance growth, it is vital that these gains are not nullified by high energy consumption from inter-core communication. With recent advances in 3D Integration CMOS technology, the possibility for realizing hybrid photonic-electronic networks-on-chip warrants investigating real application traces on functionally comparable photonic and electronic network designs. We present a comparative analysis using both synthetic benchmarks as well as real applications, run through detailed cycle accurate models implemented under the OMNeT++ discrete event simulation environment. Results show that when utilizing standard process-to-processor mapping methods, this hybrid network can achieve 75 × improvement in energy efficiency for synthetic benchmarks and up to 37 × improvement for real scientific applications, defined as network performance per energy spent, over an electronic mesh for large messages across a variety of communication patterns.

Performance and Energy Comparison of Electrical and Hybrid Photonic Networks for CMPs
High Performance Embedded Computing Conference
Due to the slowing ability of chip designers to scale processors to faster speeds, future trends point towards chip multiprocessors (CMPs) in order to utilize the available transistors in a performance and power-efficient manner. In this work, we explore two possible directions for future onchip networks: one based entirely on electrical routers, and another using a hybrid approach, combining a limited electrical network with an on-chip photonic network made possible by recent advances in 3DI…
Due to the slowing ability of chip designers to scale processors to faster speeds, future trends point towards chip multiprocessors (CMPs) in order to utilize the available transistors in a performance and power-efficient manner. In this work, we explore two possible directions for future onchip networks: one based entirely on electrical routers, and another using a hybrid approach, combining a limited electrical network with an on-chip photonic network made possible by recent advances in 3DI CMOS technology. By stacking memory and interconnect resources on CMOS layers above the processors, it is possible to integrate larger memories and faster interconnects with future CMPs. In this work, we make the following novel contributions: unlike previous examinations of photonic NoCs, we use both synthetic traces and actual application traces from SPMD-style scientific codes; we build cycle accurate simulators for the two architectures and construct simple analytic models that accurately predict energy and performance without the slow runtime of a simulator; and we show the importance of good process-to-processor mappings to obtain optimal interconnection performance. Results indicate photonic NoCs have exciting potential.

pOSKI: An Extensible Autotuning Framework to Perform Optimized SpMVs on Multicore Architectures
Master's Thesis, UC Berkeley
We have developed pOSKI: the Parallel Optimized Sparse Kernel Interface – an autotuning framework to optimize Sparse Matrix Vector Multiply (SpMV) performance on emerging shared memory multicore architectures. Our autotuning methodology extends previous work done in the scientific computing community targeting serial architectures. In addition to previously explored parallel optimizations, we find that that load balanced data decomposition is extremely important to achieving good parallel performance on the new generation of parallel architectures. Our best parallel configurations perform up to 9x faster than optimized serial codes on the AMD Santa Rosa architecture, 11.3x faster on the AMD Barcelona architecture, and 7.2x faster on the Intel Clovertown architecture.
