Excellent news out of parliament today that the digitalID spearheaded by Bill Shorten and Victor Dominello will be released as #opensource. This is a proactive step that will reduce how much data people have to provide to businesses, while providing a higher-quality and trusted identifier. The only losers in this scenario are hackers or people looking to profit off personal data. Digital trust is at a low-point in response to events which as the #Medisecure breach and Crowdstrike #bluescreen incident. Having government lead from the front by providing security researchers with the ability to verify and contribute to securing how people share their data is a huge step. By releasing this data to the public we can also build trust in how this is managed to improve citizen trust in government.

GovGPT coming our way! - multimodal including Te Reo Māori text and retrieval augmented generation, built within 2 months is an impressive move to showcase the use of GenAI with relatively effective usecase. An interesting read. Bearing in mind that Matt Barrie seems to have made his money developing a website that allows work to be offshored therefore those elements NOT contributing to Australia's economic development. Happy to be corrected. I agree that Australia has wasted its riches - companies that have made billions in mining are paying miniscule amounts in royalties - we should look to Norway. Australia's geographical remoteness means manufacturing is stymied by both the high cost of labour but also the high cost of shipping and the countries that are geographically closest to us (eg. China) kick our but when it comes to cost of production. The strategic focus of finding a competitive advantage in the higher value add / technologically advanced manufacturing space has not been there and as such it has flounder. Little strategic focus on developing key skills in tech which is not impacted as much by distance means we are largely reliant of rocks, agriculture, housing and foreign students. Quoting people per sq km misrepresents just how much of the country is either relatively inhospitable or used for agriculture - I actually think Australia's lack of dependence on rail (shipping is easier as we are an island) has meant that very few inland cities exist from historical resupply requirements. Finally, immigration and house prices..... if Australia's net birth rate is < 0 and our population is aging significantly, unless the plan is to grow GDP per capita there IS a need for immigration. This issue is not numbers, the issue is concentration - and the fact that no-one wants to move to Adelaide. But more than that, all this spouting the great Australian dream of owning their own house - I think we all need to really take time to read that sentence, specifically the words "their own". The great Australian dream was never to own 7 houses and maybe, just maybe, if we stopped treating houses like a commodity and governments changed policy accordingly to align with that.... then maybe the bubble will burst and we can stop blaming immigrants? I discover new method of file sharing, but it has become paid. It is by using the NZB files, NZB search index is paid, Meaning you have to pay a vendor for searching NZB files Also you have to buy service for using server to transfer the media. https://lnkd.in/dvWS3nbb But it is fast method and longer retention of content is assured. You can store and download content upto terabytes , depending on how much you can pay. It is not very costly. In early days these may have been free. Also , while torrents can be blocked by ISP, This method cannot be blocked , at it is probably smaller text files that are combined to form and complete binary file.

The Agile Dilemma: Time to Rethink Our PM Approach? Are Agile methodologies still the best way to manage projects, or is it time for a change? 📉 My latest "Beyond Project Management" article in PMI Sydney Australia monthly newsletter (https://lnkd.in/gGntz-86) highlights that recent trends suggest a "shift away" from pure Agile towards hybrid models, blending Agile with traditional methods for greater flexibility and effectiveness. As reported by Project Management Institute (PMI) #PulseOfTheProfession 2024 15th edition (https://lnkd.in/ghz_5Rxa), the adoption of Agile is declining after peaking at only 27% among project managers. While Predictive (waterfall/traditional) decline is easing, it is still close to double of Agile adoption (43.9% vs 24.6%). It is clear that the adoption of Hybrid is at the account of Agile rather than Predictive. But is hybrid truly hybrid? Or is it simply a rebranding of what seasoned project managers have been doing all along even before the hype of Agile? My argument is: 1️⃣ "Hybrid" has been a characteristic in project management since year dot. The current shift towards hybrid models highlights a fundamental truth: "effective project management is not about rigid adherence to one methodology but about selecting the right tools and techniques for the job at hand." 2️⃣ At its heart, project management is a means to an end, not an end in itself. 3️⃣ The ultimate goal is to introduce new ideas, products, and services in a well-planned and efficient manner. 4️⃣ This objective transcends any specific methodology, be it Agile, Predictive, or hybrid. 🎯 The focus should be on "achieving project goals and delivering value", rather than on the labels we attach to our methods. There has been a lot of hype around the Rust programming language. Most articles and blogs I read are heavy on promises, and a little light on testing. I’ve done a simple comparison between a lambda written in Python vs the same lambda written in Rust. Both use the official AWS SDKs. Boto3 is well established but the Rust SDK is new. The official release was about 8 months ago at reinvent. I’ve load tested both using K6. Why? Well, because I want to see for myself if I really do get the 8x improvement in performance and equivalent reduction in cost that people promote. What were the results? Look out for the recording, folx - well worth a watch. This was awesome, and I couldn't have agreed more with all the points - each one of them forms at least one regular soapbox moment for me, heh, and has for years :P Thank you, Victoria MacLennan and Donald Christie <3 I'd also add a couple of points: I think that we also need a lot of _non_STEM people in tech. The ongoing #tech grifts / rugpulls / disasters of the last few years (including current #GenAI hype) have shown just how damaging narrow techbro-type focus can be. We need a #diverse array (literally) of people in tech, from different backgrounds, including the social science, arts, community and so forth. Plus, of course, not all tech roles are technical (although I'd love to see technical folks also taught non-tech stuff, like basic #ethics, to widen their context). And I loved it too when Donald Christie pointed out that #coding is based on weaving, and that bringing things like crafting into coding works well - of course! We're #embodied beings, after all, and so embodied cognition is hugely powerful for us :) Can't WAIT to return to Aotearoa and continue looking for how I can contribute to the country I love, in this sort of space <3

Next Migration Batch for on-prem file share into SharePoint online migration tasks are rolling! This migration has a couple of significant uploads into some SharePoint Document libraries and has required the deployment of a second SPMT agent in a different geographical location - Victoria - Which tomorrow has a public holiday for the AFL Grand Final - So we started the migration this afternoon at 5PM to increase our upload window! SPMT can scale, you can have more than one agent deployed - you can utilize more than one uplink at a time this way (just make sure your disk IO can also handle the pressure)! #MigrationWeekend #WeekendMigration #MigrationThursday #AFLGrandFinal #SPMT

Is your cloud provider too big to fail? Even if that is the case, are you sufficiently protecting yourself from misconfigurations taking your account down or a simple billing issue getting you locked out? All Australian IT professionals would be aware of the recent UniSuper and Google Cloud issues. From the public reporting I have read it sounds like UniSuper had thought about the possibility of some disaster occurring and had put mitigations in place to minimise the impact on their business. Having a backup of all systems and services on another provider gave the business the ability to recover their systems and services even it that process took some time to do. At least it wasn’t business ending.

UniSuper, an Australian superannuation fund, is the customer and here is the original announcement - https://lnkd.in/gjZU-wVe Now, someone actually went through (https://lnkd.in/gXJ6pgky) the postmortem based on publically available information and arrived to a number of quite interesting theories. Long story short - it actually might not have been without customer's fault or at least the ability to prevent the incident. Also - automation is a blessing and a curse :). PS: I think it's very likely things went more or less the way they are described in the article, since data retention policy for all Google native storage services does not delete the data irrevocably right away and delegates the decision of what to do in phase 2 (soft delete) to a specific service (https://lnkd.in/gMvmyz66)
