#latestactivities Consortium for Sustainable Urbanization: Advocating for a resilient urban future The Consortium for Sustainable Urbanization (CSU), a New York-based not-for-profit organization, is at the forefront of promoting sustainable urbanization and resilient design. By connecting global thought leaders, fostering youth engagement, and sharing best practices, CSU aims to influence how cities are planned, designed, and built in ways that improve the quality of life for all inhabitants. The organisation has become a critical voice in the global discussion on how cities can grow sustainably while addressing the complex challenges posed by rapid urbanization. In this exclusive report, we present a video interview with two of CSU's senior fellows, Pankti Dalal and Paul Stout, who provide insights into the organisation’s mission and their roles in advancing urban sustainability. This interview was conducted during a recent meeting in New York, where we had the opportunity to discuss CSU's current initiatives, especially their efforts to involve young people in sustainable urbanisation processes on a global scale. CSU’s mission and approach Founded as a 501(c)(3) organisation, CSU is dedicated to fostering a better understanding of sustainable urbanization and the role resilient design plays in shaping the future of cities. The consortium engages in high-level meetings, public forums, and publications that promote cross-sectoral collaboration between policymakers, urban planners, and advocates. By disseminating knowledge and encouraging global conversations, CSU aims to address the critical issues of housing, transportation, energy, and urban resilience. Paul Stout, a Senior Fellow at CSU and currently pursuing his Masters in Landscape Architecture at the City College of New York, emphasises the organisation’s focus on responsible and enlightened planning. "We advocate for cities that are walkable, car-free, and healthier for all. My passion lies in ensuring that urban design policies contribute to making cities happier and more sustainable places," Stout notes during the interview. Securing adequate resources to implement resilience initiatives is essential for their success and sustainability. Innovative funding models can help cities overcome financial barriers and invest in the future. Key Funding Models to Consider: 1. Resilience Bonds: These are innovative financial instruments designed to fund resilience projects. Investors provide upfront capital for projects that reduce disaster risk, and the cities repay investors based on the savings generated from avoided disaster costs. This model aligns financial incentives with community benefits. 2. Public-Private Partnerships (PPPs): As mentioned earlier, PPPs are a powerful way to pool resources and share risks between the public and private sectors. By leveraging private investment, cities can undertake large-scale resilience projects without placing the entire financial burden on taxpayers. 3. Crowdfunding: Engaging the community through crowdfunding platforms can help raise funds for specific resilience initiatives. This approach not only generates financial support but also fosters community ownership and engagement in the projects. 4. Grants and Donations: Seeking grants from government agencies, foundations, and international organizations can provide essential funding for resilience projects. Accessory dwelling units (ADUs) are gaining traction as a solution to address housing affordability, but barriers like high construction costs and limited financing options still stand in the way. In 2023, the Bipartisan Policy Center brought together industry leaders and policy experts to explore how ADUs can help ease our nation’s housing supply shortage.
