While studying abroad in Argentina during my second year of college, I was trying to find a way to play music during a pre-game before heading to a nightclub and thought of this:

What if I could play one of my 60 minute DJ mixes in sync, across 10-20 cell phones and laptops from my study abroad cohort.

I was able to get about 12 devices in sync and placed them throughout the room/outside and was amazed.

As soon as I got back from going abroad, I got hooked on trying to solve for this with a more scalable solution. I built a team of 4 people, including a mechanical engineer and software engineer and we worked on this app for most of my junior year of college. My dream was to fill a coliseum of 30k people and have everyone play one of my mixes at the same time -- almost like a festival.

In tandem with working through sound-sync issues, I was also trying to build a social network on top of the platform. Imagine being able to follow one of your friends who has really good taste in music, then that person hosting a party and everyone being able to join their "set" -- instead of playing different music in the backyard, living room, upstairs, etc., everything would be in sync.

After a few months of building and researching my engineering team came to the conclusion that the problem was too difficult to solve because music is so intricate, the sound would need to be exactly in sync. We were able to get the sound within 1 second of a delay but if you've ever heard a bad DJ play with the echo effect too much, then you can imagine what that sounded like.

A few years later, Samsung came out with a feature on all of their devices that solved this exact problem.

Maybe we should've stuck with it after all.

Nonetheless, it was a fun ride and I learned a ton, including how to develop a user interface, user behaviors, and how important it is to understand your audience.
