The recent PJM 2025/26 capacity market results show the importance of picking the right consultant. Recently, the market price for capacity in PJM increased by 9x, but solar, wind, and batteries sat out the market run. The key points are that to develop generation in PJM profitably, an analysis of the capacity and energy market is needed. FERC has approved NERC’s revised ROP to identify and register unregistered IBRs connected to the Bulk-Power System by May 2026, addressing a reliability gap associated with the increasing integration of IBRs on the grid. The new Category 2 GO/GOP will apply to entities owning or operating IBRs with an aggregate nameplate capacity of 20 MVA and above and are connected to 60 kV and above. 🔍 Impact: 📈~14% increase in visibility of existing IBRs. ✅~98% of IBRs will comply NERC Reliability Standards, on par with conventional resources. ⚡This strengthens the reliability and resilience of our electric grid. The DOE Grid Deployment Office has been studying how expanding transmission could help: ✅ integrate more renewable energy ✅ lower the cost of energy generation ✅ decrease carbon emissions from grid operations A new PNNL report, part of the National Transmission Planning Study, shows that with careful planning, new transmission lines and renewables would be able to keep the western grid stable even with high energy demand. 💡

The U.S. is facing a critical shortage of power transformers with lead times up to three years leaving the energy sector anxious and uncertain about the stability of the future grid. While the NREL says the demand increase is largely driven by aging transformers and electrification. The NREL also estimates distribution transformer supply may need to increase 160%-260% by 2050 compared to 2021 levels to meet residential, commercial, industrial, and transportation energy demands. National Academy of Engineering (NAE) Section 6 (Electric Power/Energy Systems) and NERC have published a report, Evolving Planning Criteria for a Sustainable Power #Grid, on electric reliability criteria for grid planning. The report summarizes the proceedings and actionable recommendations arising from a co-sponsored #NAE Section 6 and NERC #workshop held earlier this year which examined #electric reliability criteria for planning resource and transmission adequacy on the transforming grid and focused on two broad topics: capacity vs. #energy and planning the transforming transmission grid. The report identifies nine actionable topic areas that collectively form an improved approach to resource adequacy. I'm pleased to share a new study published in the Journal of Electric Power Components and Systems, focusing on Compensation of the CT Saturation for Transmission Line Differential Protection. The study, titled "A New Approach to Current Transformer Saturation Compensation for Transmission Line Differential Protection". This paper presents a non-linear autoregressive network with an external inputs (NARX) model to reconstruct the current transformer (CT) secondary waveform distortion in the presence of protected transmission lines. The qualitative analysis carried out on the autonomous model reveals the accurate performance of the current differential relay, because of the ability of the NARX to make accurate predictions and signal reconstruction even when faced with noisy or incomplete datasets. Congratulations to the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) on the Innovative Grid Deployment Liftoff report released today, highlighting the important role of grid-enhancing technologies (#GETs) and other advanced grid solutions to cost-effectively increase the capacity and improve the reliability of our existing system in the near term. While these technologies are commercially available today, adoption has been limited relative to their potential value to the grid. EPRI is working with numerous energy companies, DOE, NYSERDA, and other collaborators to accelerate deployment to provide their maximum value. Following are a few of our recent and ongoing efforts to support electric companies to deploy these advanced grid solutions to meet specific system needs today and to develop additional understanding and tools to enable broader deployment going forward: - Extensive thermal and mechanical testing of advanced conductors in EPRI’s state-of-the-art laboratories, including accelerated aging simulation of 40 years of in-service life and advanced performance monitoring of utility installations, providing the basis for EPRI’s advanced conductor specification guide for when purchasing advanced conductors. - Field monitoring of utility dynamic line rating (#DLR) deployments, including assessments presently being conducted with four U.S. electric utilities and NYSERDA, plus the development of new current-controlled overhead test spans at EPRI’s high voltage laboratory. - Deployment of an Advanced Power Flow Controller (APFC) on the Vermont Electric Power Company through a DOE Grid Resilience and Innovation Program project to increase capacity and resilience of inter-regional ties between Vermont and New York.
