The Atlas Peak AVA produces Napa’s most significant and exceptional Cabernet Sauvignon wines. Atlas Peak is significantly cooler than the nearby valley floor and typically produces wines with bright fruit flavors and relatively high acidity. At an elevation of 2663 feet, it is Napa’s most prominent volcanic mountain peak. It has been producing wines of renown since 1870. These mountain vineyards, usually some thousand feet or so in elevation, offer a different microclimatic rhythm and thus, produce a greater intensity of flavors and aromas. Only with height do you get the combination of clean, thin, cool mountain air which steadies the day’s temperatures, creating warmer days of low humidity with full sun and cool nights. As elevation increases, sunlight becomes more concentrated causing grapes to develop deeper pigments. They get more early sun because they are above the fog line, thus forcing grapes to mature and ripen slowly. The cooler nights provide slower maturation of grapes, resulting in exceptionally well-balanced, more complex red wines. Atlas Peak Appellation Association is a nonprofit trade association focused on cultivating excellence by inspiring its Atlas Peak association members to consistently produce wines of the highest quality, to provide environmental leadership, promote Atlas Peak's unique terroir and to care for the extraordinary volcanic mountain we call home.
