Chinese truck manufacturer Foton Motor says it will build a new $100 million US assembly plant near Guadalajara, Jalisco. Headquartered in Beijing, the company boasts assets of more than $6.9 billion US and a workforce of 300,000 employees. This new facility will be Foton’s second in the state of Jalisco, highlighting the company's satisfaction with the state's business environment and production capabilities. LDR Solutions, responsible for managing Foton’s distribution in Mexico, said the first vehicles are expected to roll off the assembly line in January 2025. Foton currently has 24 distributors across Mexico and plans to add 15 more by the end of the year. Upon completion, the plant will employ 115 people and produce 1,000 pickup models per month, featuring gasoline, diesel, and hybrid engines. Initially, production will cater to the Mexican and South American markets. Javier Rodríguez Murrieta, director of operations at LDR Solutions, said Foton chose Jalisco due to the state’s robust automotive ecosystem, skilled labor force, and strategic geographic location relative to major domestic markets. “Jalisco offers ideal labor conditions and reliable security compared to other states,” Rodríguez said. “Additionally, its proximity to the ports of Manzanillo (Colima) and Lázaro Cárdenas (Michoacán) will ease the importation of parts from China.” Roberto Arechederra, Jalisco’s economic development minister, credited the ministry’s outreach and promotional efforts for attracting the new investment. “I believe the new plant will trigger further investment in our state, particularly as suppliers seek to be closer to the production facilities here.” BYD, another major Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer, is reportedly deciding between Jalisco and neighboring Michoacán for its first plant in Mexico.

In 2023, Mexico solidified its standing as a global automotive giant by receiving $7 billion in Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) for automotive manufacturing. This figure alone reflects the country’s longstanding position as a leader in internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicle production.
