Bit by bit, step by step... For my fellow entrepreneurs...keep going! Small business development programs are under attack. It can be disheartening but keep your eyes on the prize. Black women receive less than 1% of venture capital. Programs that give minorities and women a fighting chance still only account for about 8-10% of the pie where they exist. Excited to share that the 2023 impact report for LISC's Black Economic Development Fund (BEDF) is now live. Since 2020, with generous support from our investors, BEDF has committed a majority of its capital, investing $211.9 million to fuel Black-led financial institutions, Black-led businesses, and other organizations doing business in predominantly Black communities addressing economic challenges and contributing to closing the racial wealth gap. Through initiatives like BEDF, LISC remains at the forefront of efforts to enhance capital access for entrepreneurs serving communities of color. I’m just going to say this part out loud … There are way too many grant and funding programs that are centered around “teaching” Black and brown Founders about traditional and basic models of entrepreneurship and business. What we need is the access and funding needed to execute our ideas and solutions - to re-envision and shape entrepreneurship and business centered in community and collective liberation. 🚫Not forced mentorship 🚫Not a multi-month cohort program 🚫Not a biz 101 course
