How do you keep your motivation high in sales?
Staying even-keeled in sales is one of the most important behaviors any successful sales rep demonstrates. There are inevitably a lot of highs and lows, and the more you can do to smooth those highs and lows out, the farther you can go without burning out. My favorite way to conceptualize smoothing out this rollercoaster is by taking mental stock of the things outside of work that bring me joy and how much time I’m devoting to them. The more time I devote to my family, friendships, outdoors (I like to run and ski), fitness, meditating, etc. the less pressure I’m putting on my success at work to dictate my happiness. Ironically, when you take the pressure off, you tend to perform better over the long run.

What do you do if your Sales Operations team needs to streamline processes and boost efficiency?
Understanding the lifecycle of a prospect is key. 1) Create clearly defined stages for each step of the prospect lifecycle. 2) Measure the time a prospect spends in each stage. 3) Identify a stage that prospects get stuck in. *there are likely a few, in which case you can start with a stage that is easier to fix with a more impactful outcome to the overall sales cycle. 4) Diagnose the issue. I.e. redlining takes too long. 5) Solve the issue. I.e. Simplify your MSA, use a contract management solution, only allow redlining above certain deal sizes, etc. 6) Find your next bottleneck, rinse and repeat.

What do you do if your sales representatives are not meeting their targets?
First, look at the targets themselves. Are they arbitrary or do they tie into the sales team’s target assumptions? Also, are they attainable? Especially if you have historic data to compare to. If targets are attainable and fit within the sales revenue model, start from the top of the funnel and work your way down. Diagnose how many leads each SDR is prospecting and make sure it’s enough, given current conversion rates, to set the right amount of meetings. Next, focus on messaging. Is the messaging clear with a strong hook? Last, coach on objection handling. If SDRs are prospecting enough with strong messaging, they should be getting replies. Now it’s about turning the “not interested’s” into meetings with strong objection handling.

How do you pitch your fintech value proposition to different stakeholders?
How am I going to save the customer time and/or money or generate new revenue streams. Be clear on this point and try not to drown it out with every feature and detail of the product. Next, I’m focusing on who my audience is. Am I talking to someone on the product team? I want to figure out what their roadmap priorities are first and then help them imagine where the product I’m offering can seamlessly fit in. Operations? I want to figure out what internal processes look like today and explore where my product can help remove manual work, reduce human error, improve efficiencies, and ultimately give them time back. Cater the cost saving and/or new revenue stream talk track to your audience for the most effective pitch.
