It's Black Maternal Health Week 2024 (#BMHW24), and it's time to ask why the urgency of this conversation isn't resonating as it should. Advocating for more awareness of Black maternal health is critical, yet many posts are not being included in the thread of comments and posts. We need to take action by asking others if they have seen such posts and, if not, repost and trend the topic. #policychanges Black women still face significant barriers to quality maternal healthcare, resulting in alarming disparities in outcomes. Advocates are needed to bring attention to the urgent need for change in Black maternal health. Let's amplify our voices and advocate for policies prioritizing maternal health equity, paving the way for dramatic improvements in 2024 and beyond. In the wake of Vice President Kamala Harris's ascension as the presumptive nominee for the Democratic Party, the Howard University Initiative on Public Opinion conducted a poll on the opinions of Black voters July 22-24 in relation to Harris's candidacy. The report includes results from more than 2000 respondents from more than 30 states, weighted by gender and education level. Results suggest that Harris is best known for her advocacy for reproductive rights, that her best path to victory is to select a white male running mate, and that respondents view her as a politically moderate Democrat. As a young person I always want to receive instant results like just blink and see results But today, I had the privilege of joining a powerful session led by Nyamekye (Yah-MEH-chay) Wilson , CEO of Black Sisters in STEM . It was an eye-opening discussion on how energy, mindset, and generosity shape our lives. One key takeaway was the idea that what you give comes back. Whether it’s your time, effort, or knowledge, the universe rewards those who give freely. It's a reminder that success is tied not only to what we achieve but also to how we lift others along the way. I was also encouraged to understand that life reflects our actions. If I want more positivity or kindness in my life , I must embody those traits myself. Our daily choices influence the reality I experience. Finally, the principle of reaping what you sow was a powerful reminder. The seeds I plant in my career, relationship, and community will determine the harvest we reap in the future. The goal is to get over 1000 surveys completed! —————- Black birthing people have higher rates of maternal morbidity, mortality, postpartum depression, and poor experience of maternity care and lower rates of breastfeeding than other racial groups. These outcomes are a result of centuries of macrolevel policies, institutional practices, and cultural norms that reinforce one another and continue to perpetuate social, economic, and political disadvantages for Black individuals and communities. Black birth workers have always provided essential holistic health care to their communities in the United States. From the 17th to 19th centuries, enslaved Black midwives practiced the skills and traditions of African midwifery in caring for both other enslaved Black people and the White relatives of slave owners. In the Jim Crow era, “Grand” midwives in the South (elder Black community midwives) provided essential maternal and infant health care to Black communities. Community doulas have reclaimed the support role over the last few decades. As culturally congruent health workers, they share similar lived experiences and racial, cultural, and other intersectional identities with their client. Doulas provide physical and emotional support during pregnancy, childbirth, and the postpartum period. In the prenatal and postpartum periods, community doulas assist with navigation of health care and social services, provide peer education, and give social support. ALL IN ALL.. When Black doulas are present things happen! GOOD THINGS! Studies have found that Black doulas can help troubleshoot lactation issues, keep an eye on mental health, and monitor recovery. In 2025, The Better Black Business Project will be focusing on the importance of community and networking along with closing the Black wealth gap. Black wealth in increasing, but so is the wealth gap, ugh! "According to the latest data from the Federal Reserve’s Survey of Consumer Finances, the nation’s racial wealth gap increased during the COVID-19 pandemic. Between 2019 and 2022, median wealth increased by $51,800, but the racial wealth gap increased by $49,950—adding up to a total difference of $240,120 in wealth between the median white household and the median Black household."
