⚡Will #EVs make up half the Dutch new-car market in 2024? - The Dutch EV market grew 11% in April, thanks to a total of 13,274 registrations. Consisting of battery-electric vehicles (BEVs) and plug-in hybrids (PHEVs), EVs took a 46.6% market share in the month. Meanwhile, overall new-car deliveries receded by 4%. - BEVs claimed a 32% share of the overall market, with 9,092 registrations. This means that both plug-ins and BEVs are ahead of last year’s result of 44% and 31% respectively. - All-electric vehicles represented 68% of the EV market last month, above the year-to-date average of 66%. - EVs could account for 51% of all deliveries in the Netherlands by the end of 2024. BEVs alone are expected to take a 36% share. Here are the key takeaways: 𝐓𝐨𝐭𝐚𝐥 𝐑𝐞𝐠𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬: A total of 13,174 EVs hit Dutch roads in May, comprising both battery-electric vehicles (BEVs) and plug-in hybrids (PHEVs). Unfortunately, this marked a 13% year-on-year decline. 𝐀𝐥𝐥-𝐄𝐥𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐜 𝐌𝐨𝐝𝐞𝐥𝐬: All-electric models saw a 12% slump, with 9,680 registrations during the month. 𝐏𝐇𝐄𝐕: Plug-in hybrid deliveries declined by 15%, totaling 3,494 units. 𝐍𝐞𝐰-𝐂𝐚𝐫 𝐑𝐞𝐠𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬: Overall new-car registrations in the country dropped by 14% compared to the previous year. 𝐌𝐚𝐫𝐤𝐞𝐭 𝐒𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐞: Plug-ins accounted for 46.5% of the new-car market, with BEVs alone holding a 34% share. Tesla installed a milestone 60,000th charger globally! Next to it is the 600th Supercharger in Japan, and also the first V4 deployment in the country. Max de Zegher (Director, Charging globally @Tesla) comments: "Although not as mind-blowing as catching a rocket with chopsticks… for the teams behind it, every Supercharger opening feels like a little miracle of collaboration with permitting jurisdictions, site hosts & utilities. The new routes that they open up bring happiness to traveling families, making it all so worth it!" Oh how wild it is to witness the Supercharging team execute. Interesting discussions on circular economy during the Circular Valley Forum today. The best were the start-up pitches. For example, QiTech GmbH Milan von dem Bussche presented his technology for separating plastic caps, WorkbenchX Bryan Winship who connects end of use industrial equipment to the circular economy, Re:notch Solar Heat Storage Erik Kayser who established a thermal battery to boost heat pump performance three times/reducing electricity demand by 30%. Or resourcly Helena Most who is turning idle inventory into a new input resource, building circular supply chains for industrial manufacturers using AI. All helps sustainability. At CBS International Business School we understand the needs of start-ups. I am particularly interested in start-ups with a positive impact.  #creatingtomorrow

I had the opportunity to get the first comprehensive interviews of IONNA's CEO, Seth Cutler, CPO, Ricardo Stamatti, and Chief Engineer, Philipp Retsch. as well as a tour of its upcoming "Rechargery" site in Apex, North Carolina. IONNA is the produce of a collaboration between eight large automobile manufacturers (General Motors, Stellantis, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Hyundai, Kia, Honda, and Toyota) and has the potential to dramatically improve the reach and customer experience of high-speed charging in North America. This number has some finger-in-the-wind about it, but as far as I can tell, we only have about 1% of the charging infrastructure we need to decarbonize all vehicles with batteries. Coming to a calculation for charging infrastructure requires some hypotheses about user expectations that need to be met for market adoption. For example, today, about 80% of charging happens at home, but in the future, when we move to fruit that hangs a little higher (i.e., families that drive further, folks who drive trucks, families that drive multiple vehicles), drivers will probably need charging infrastructure that works a lot more like gasoline fueling infrastructure. In other words, to decarbonize more than the city commuter's daily driver, we probably need relatively ubiquitous fast-charging infrastructure. Today, there are around 175,000 public chargers in the United States. Of those, only 37,000 are DC fast-chargers. DC fast-chargers take around 10x the time to fuel a vehicle that a gas pump does, and today, we empirically see that you need about 10x more DC fast-chargers than you need fuel stations for the same number of vehicles in a market. Thus, in a world where more charging is happening in public, you probably need to replace a fuel pump with 10 DC fast-chargers. Today, there are somewhere between 1M and 2M gas pumps in the United States. That would imply that we need 10M-20M charging stations to replace those fuel pumps, and to be effective, they probably need to be fast-chargers. For the math fans out there, 37,000 is 0.19%-0.37% of that range. It would be nice to include L1 and L2 chargers in this mix to improve scalability, but in that context, you need to have chargers for all vehicles in places where dwell time is high. Again, for the city commuter's daily driver, that works okay at home for now, but as BEVs per household increases, and the challenge moves outside of cities, that will involve having charging for every vehicle at every workplace, essentially, or some percentage of that to offset what can't be done at home. There are 275,000,000 vehicles in the US alone. Charger requirement would explode. We have a long way to go to make BEVs more feasible for folks, and that's before you tackle generation, transmission, and distribution.

The continuous trend of shrinking market share for battery electric cars in the EU sends an extremely worrying signal to industry and policymakers. In August 2024, European registrations of battery-electric (BEV) cars dropped ↘ by 43.9% to 92,627 units (compared to 165,204 the same period last year), with their total market share slipping to 14.4% from 21% a year before. This was driven by the spectacular drop ↘ in the two biggest markets for BEV cars: Germany (-68.8%) and France (-33.1%). From January to August, 902,011 new battery-electric cars were registered, representing 12.6% of the market. Plug-in hybrid car registrations saw a decrease ↘ (-22.3%) last month, with declines recorded in all their major markets. In August, plug-in hybrids accounted for 7.1% of the total car market, down from 7.4% last year, with 45,590 units sold. Hybrid-electric vehicles are the only vehicle type that saw growth ⤴ in August, with car registrations rising by 6.6% to 201,552 units. Man. Read the comment section. So much negativity. I actually agree with Nico on the sheer technology and cost advantage that is coming out of China. Obviously there are major concerns of how that has been achieved and sustainability re supply chain. But I think the point he was making had more to do with the advancement in technology and manufacturing. Go on YouTube and watch a video of Xiami’s new fully automated car factories. They are incredible.

"US Big-Truck Charging Has Private Money’s Attention The weightiest trucks have been some of the slowest to electrify, despite producing an outsized share of the US transport sector’s emissions. That may be about to change. Greenlane Infrastructure LLC — the $675 million joint venture between Daimler Truck North America LLC, NextEra Energy Resources LLC and a BlackRock Inc. fund — just broke ground on the flagship site of the 280-mile commercial charging corridor it’s planning between Los Angeles and Las Vegas. Terawatt Infrastructure Inc., which has raised more than $1 billion from investors including Vision Ridge Partners LLC, is building a network of heavy-duty charging stations connecting California’s Port of Long Beach to El Paso, Texas. WattEV, backed by Apollo Global Management Inc. and Vitol, already operates several charging depots and has 15 more coming."
