Check out a recent publication in Neuron featuring Sanford Labs' Chief Scientist Gene Yeo along with team members Wenhao Jin and Jasmine Mueller. This study looked into the role of RNA splicing in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), focusing on the protein CHMP7. Using a CRISPR-based screen, they found that the RNA-binding protein SmD1, a component of the SMN complex, is a key regulator of CHMP7 localization. SmD1 expression levels were reduced in motor neurons derived from iPSC cells from ALS patients, and inhibition of SmD1/SMN complex formation increased CHMP7 nuclear localization. Overexpression of SmD1 in ALS motor neurons restored CHMP7's cytoplasmic localization and corrected STMN2 splicing, a known ALS-associated defect. These findings suggest that therapeutic approaches for increasing SmD1's expression level or decreasing CHMP7's nuclear localization could restore some of the known splicing defects in ALS. They've developed a small peptide that disrupts the interaction between KRASG12V and JAK1, leading to increased killing of cancer cells carrying KRASG12V by restoring the immune response. NIH Quantum Computing Challenge aims to catalyze the identification of novel applications of quantum computing approaches to apply toward use cases within clinical, translational, and biomedical problem areas. The Challenge will have two stages: Ideation and Planning followed by Quantum Algorithm Development, and Implementation on Quantum Hardware. NIH-NCATS intends to award a total prize purse of up to $1,300,000 across the two stages of Quantum Computing Challenge. The three areas of interest for the current Challenge include: 1.
